GBTA | Global Business Travel Association joins Net Zero Carbon Events initiative as a supporter: Since launching at COP26 - UN Climate Change Conference in 2021, NZCE has developed a wealth of resources to support events industry organisations on their journeys to net zero carbon emissions. These include a Roadmap and advisory reports on Venue Energy; Smart Production and Waste Management; Logistics; Travel and Accommodation; Food and Food Waste; Offsetting and Measurement. With the campaign now focused on implementation in each of these areas, GBTA and NZCE will be working together with ICCA on implementing the Travel and Accommodation element. James Rees, President of the JMIC Joint Meetings Industry Council, which is driving the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative for the industry said: “GBTA has unparallelled expertise and experience in the technical aspects of business travel and sustainability, especially through the Sustainability Initiative of the GBTA Foundation. We are delighted to be working with both GBTA and ICCA on this and looking forward to aligning our work and developing common ground for all stakeholders in future. “It is also a tremendous testimonial to the framework that NZCE has developed that GBTA will be using this for their own events in future.” Suzanne Neufang, CEO, GBTA, added: “GBTA is deeply committed and active in helping to create a more sustainable future for global business travel. We are pleased to be part of the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative and working with the JMIC and other key organisations to bring the power of our collective efforts to ensure more net zero-focused approaches to the very significant sector of meetings and events." Senthil Gopinath, CEO, ICCA said: “One of our pillars as an organisation is sustainability, and ICCA is committed to working with our partners in the industry to promote the overall goal of reducing carbon emissions. It's crucial that the meetings and events community as a whole joins forces to advance sustainable practices and policies around the globe, and as more organisations come on board, we get closer to our goal of Net Zero by the year 2050." #NetZeroCarbonEvents is open to all organisations involved in events. Registration is free of charge. Financial contributions are crucial to developing the campaign. #eventprofs #events #meetingprofs #exhibitions #businesstravel #sustainability

I had the privilege of being one of the speakers at the AfSAE African Association Summit #AAS5 in Dar Es Salaam over the past few days. Being here in person and discussing The Iceberg and the Net Zero Carbon Events Initiative while connecting with African associations, has been truly heartwarming. The challenges shared by association representatives here are similar to those faced around the world, and the curiosity about how to embed sustainability into daily operations is impressive. I’m particularly excited that during the conference, delegates identified actionable steps to make the next event even more sustainable. It was amazing to share the stage with many inspiring professionals from our industry, including Glenton De Kock, Genevieve Leclerc, CMP, CICE, Frank Murangwa, Veemal Gungadin, Lowell Aplebaum, EdD, FASAE, CAE, CPF, Mkunde Senyagwa, Matt Raven, Kathleen Lihanda - Omol and others. Thanks Jeffers Miruka for the opportunity. I’m already looking forward to reconnecting with the incredible African events professionals. Until then, Asante Sana! #Sustainability #AssociationLeadership #AfricanAssociations

If all business events were carbon-neutral, we could reduce our burden on the planet by 10%. It might surprise you, but conferences and events drive as much as 10% the world’s carbon footprint, as per a 2022 study. That’s equivalent to the annual emissions of the USA. With every sector bouncing back in the post-pandemic era, the event industry is set to return to full-swing—along with its massive impact on our planet. While some argue in favour of virtual conferences as a solution, I believe that in-person MICE events hold great value. They open up opportunities for deeper engagement and networking, and help foster a greater sense of cohesion for genuine collaboration. Attendees also benefit from hands-on immersive experiences, face-to-face panels and educational workshops. We therefore need to bridge this gap. We can balance objectives of productivity, engagement and commercial success with environmental responsibility—if we change the way we currently host and organise MICE events. That’s why I am proud that Regal Hotels Group has launched Green Meetings, our new initiative to unlock sustainable MICE events in Hong Kong. Together with IST as the knowledge partner, the goal is to not only spearhead our own green transformation, but to also accelerate industry-wide adoption of sustainable solutions. Building on top of our strong values, Regal’s Green Meetings offer post-event comprehensive emissions analysis for organisers. This Carbon Accounting Report is based on the NZCE global framework. It accounts for multiple factors: production materials, logistics, energy, transport, waste, accommodation and even food emissions. Food emissions, in particular, is an overlooked issue in our global fight against climate change. With our food system driving ⅓ of the world’s footprint, Regal’s Green Meetings emphasises Sustainable Culinary Offerings. We aim to minimise the impact of F&B at events by prioritising locally-sourced, plant-based ingredients and low-carbon cooking methods such as salads and sous vide. Finally, we’re making carbon offsetting easy for MICE organisers. Partnering with a Hong Kong-based global carbon marketplace, there will be an option to offset the emissions of each event as calculated by our Carbon Accounting Report. By making carbon-neutral events effortless, we’re removing barriers for organisers to become ESG role models in their industry. Those who offset emissions will be recognised with a Carbon Credit Retirement Certificate. We have a long way to go, but our latest efforts represent a major step forward in our mission to make innovative sustainable experiences a reality. As one of the largest hotel groups in HK, we believe we can help MICE organisers make a huge difference. With our one-stop Green Meetings, we hope to inspire meaningful collective action towards building a future that is healthy and sustainable for generations to come. #MICE #Sustainability
