🌍🌊 A Call from RISE UP as We Head into CBD COP 16 As the RISE UP team (Sivaja Nair and Flora McMorrin) prepares to join our partners at CBD COP 16, we are reflecting on the critical decisions that lie ahead. We, alongside other civil society organizations, are urging world leaders to place equity and justice at the forefront of every discussion. The decisions made at this conference will shape the future of our ocean—and the lives of the communities that depend on its health. #NatureIsAlsoBlue For us, this isn’t just about policy; it’s about the people and ecosystems that rely on the ocean. Here are our key priorities for the conference: ▶ Human Rights-Based Approaches – Governments must adopt inclusive approaches, ensuring human rights indicators are fully integrated into biodiversity frameworks. ▶ Support for Small-Scale Fisheries – Let’s ensure small-scale fishers are heard and policies are designed to uplift their livelihoods, while advancing gender equality. ▶ Ratify the High Seas Treaty – To truly protect our oceans, we must safeguard 30% of the high seas by 2030, while respecting Indigenous and community rights. ▶ Equitable Financing – Financial support for biodiversity efforts must reach those who need it most—Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and other rights-holders. ▶ Moratorium on Deep-Sea Mining – The health of our ocean depends on it. Let’s pause deep-sea mining until science can confirm no harm to marine ecosystems. We hope you'll stand with us in calling for these vital changes. Now is the time to act, for the future of our planet and its people. 🔗 Learn more and sign the open letter: https://lnkd.in/epbBeFVg #COP16 #OceanConservation #SSF #Biodiversity #HighSeasTreaty #DefendtheDeep #RiseUp4theOcean

🌊 The Power of Youth for the High Seas 🌊 At RISE UP, we believe in the crucial role youth play in shaping the future of ocean governance. This inspiring guest blog by Sonia Violante Ptasznik, Brazil’s High Seas Youth Ambassador, showcases just that. https://lnkd.in/e7Ez9xEf From artistic initiatives like the stunning mural by Alexandre Huber at the Aquário Municipal de Santos to her advocacy efforts, Sonia is mobilizing youth and institutions to push for Brazil's ratification of the #HighSeasTreaty. Her work underscores the power of youth-led movements to create real change in ocean governance, urging governments and communities to act now. At RISE UP, we stand with Sonia and all young advocates fighting for a sustainable future for our ocean. Together, we can ensure that ocean-dependent communities and the next generation of ocean stewards are at the forefront of global decision-making. 🌍🌊 #HighSeas #BBNJ #YouthForTheOcean #OceanGovernance #BluePlanet #RiseUp4theOcean

This momentum aligns perfectly with our goals as we head into CBD #COP16 and the #UNOceanConference #PeopleoftheSea day. It’s time to amplify small-scale fishers' voices and demand policy shifts that safeguard our marine ecosystems, from halting destructive fishing practices to championing equitable ocean governance. Let’s keep pushing for a sustainable future! #SSF #CBDCOP16 #UNOceanConference #PeopleoftheSea #RiseUPfortheOcean #sustainability"
Great to be in Brussels Ocean Week to engage in discussions about protecting Europe’s seas and supporting coastal communities. 🌊 The Rethink Fisheries event was a highlight, where fishers, NGOs, and stakeholders gathered in a tent beneath the iconic Democracy sign outside the European Parliament. The bold message on the roof of the tent , visible from Parliament offices, urged the policy makers above to 'Rethink Fisheries’. We need to listen to small-scale, low impact fishers and we stop bottom trawling in our Marine Protected Areas now! If you haven’t already please sign the petition: https://lnkd.in/ea3_Kgp2 There’s also a recently released report on fishing for a new era here: https://lnkd.in/ebB3v-sy I also attended the launch of the Blue Manifesto—a powerful call to action for policymakers to restore and protect our ocean by 2030. This vision aligns closely with RISE UP’s goals, ensuring marine ecosystems that support thriving coastal communities. Find out more about this roadmap to a healthy ocean here: https://lnkd.in/ep57teFm Today was an opportunity to meet MEPa in an ‘ocean lab and tomorrow is packed with events- I'm looking forward to learning how criminalizing ecocide—defined as the large-scale destruction of ecosystems—could serve as a powerful legal mechanism to combat threats such as pollution, deep-sea mining, overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change. It’s been wonderful connecting with so many inspiring ocean advocates this week. Lots to take away and loads of work to be done. #EUOceanWeek! Thanks for sharing! We're thrilled that over 200 people joined this important conversation on equitable partnerships and advocacy for small-scale fishers. So glad to see the session, moderated by our own Sivaja Nair, was useful to so many. #SSF #SmallScaleFishers #RiseUp4theOcean #RulesofConduct

Last month I was able to attend the webinar that brought together over 100 representatives from various civil society organizations to explore The Rules of Conduct for Working with Small-Scale Fishers (SSF) in the context of marine and coastal conservation. The session aimed to educate participants on the principles developed by small-scale fisher movements, share best practices, and encourage organizations to commit to actions that support SSF communities being moderated by Sivaja Nair Main Topics Covered: .The significance of equitable and inclusive partnerships with small-scale fishers. .Best practices for implementing the Rules of Conduct in daily operations. .The need for robust advocacy and capacity-building initiatives within SSF communities. .The importance of respecting traditional knowledge alongside scientific research in marine conservation efforts. .Strategies for ensuring the voices of SSF are heard and valued in policy discussions and decision-making. This interesting webinar successfully facilitated dialogue among stakeholders, emphasizing the need for collaboration, consent, and respect when working with small-scale fishers. There's a collective commitment to the implementation of the SSF guidelines towards fostering sustainable marine environments that benefit both the ocean and the communities that rely on it. There was the feeling of encouragement to propagate the principles discussed and actively engage in practices that promote equity and justice for small-scale fishing communities. I've shared link to the rules of contact in comments #fisheries #fisheriesmanagement #MPA #SSF #coastalcommunities #ocean #transparency #equity #partnership #ecosystems #sustainability #environment

🙏Thank you to all those who joined us yesterday for a really interesting discussion on the ‘Rules of Conduct for working with Small-Scale Fishers’ 🛶🐟- The recording will be available soon for anyone who wants to watch.
