We are pleased to invite you to participate in SAFE’s 2024 Annual Conference, entitled Consumers Come First: Defining Sustainable Food Systems, which will take place on 19th November 2024 (09:30 – 17:30) at  🏢 The Northern Ireland Executive Office, located at located at Chaussee d’Etterbeek 180, 1040 Brussels. This important event will bring together key stakeholders, policymakers, experts, and citizens from across Europe to engage in critical discussions about the future of food safety and sustainability in the EU.   The main themes of this year's conference are transparency, inclusion, awareness and labelling, with a focus on the issues that matter most to consumers and stakeholders alike. Our program will feature panel discussions and presentations on a range of pressing topics, including:   - The regulation of food labelling, including natural claims  - Food waste reduction strategies  - Addressing non-communicable diseases  - Acrylamide and its impact on food safety  - The role of ultra-processed foods in the modern diet 🥓 🍭   A highlight of the event will be the presentation of findings from SAFE’s recent survey on European consumers’ perceptions of food labeling, specifically the use of the term "natural." This timely research will spark conversations on the challenges of unclear regulations and their impact on consumer trust in the European food system. ✏️ We have mixed feelings about the positions voiced by Commissioner-designate Christophe Hansen on key aspects of agricultural and trade policy, at the hearing at the European Parliament yesterday. We support strengthening ▶️ import rules for food products, making sure they meet European standards. However, importing cheaper products cannot be the sole policy to address the cost of living on average Europeans and measures to improve the purchasing power of citizens should be put in place, as well. We welcome his pledge to support geographic indications against unfair competition, promoting local food consumption and protecting local culture. 🌞 👨👨👧👦 Reducing animal protein in diets continues to be a key strategic goal, but this should not be achieved solely through technological innovation. We advocate for policies that actively encourage the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, which was notably absent in yesterday's discussion with MEPs during the hearing. Relying heavily on new protein sources could result in an increased dependence on ultra-processed foods, which should be excluded from healthy eating guidelines. 🥬 We really welcome about Hansen’s pledge that the Commission will promote pesticide reduction generally and promote more sustainable types of pesticides. We also agree with the promise to support farming regions more consistently. We expect him to keep these pledges throughout this mandate. 

📢 Some interesting and worrying news! 🙁 The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is voicing concerns about plant-based protein ingredients containing high levels of acrylamide, a potentially neurotoxic and carcinogenic chemical 🔬. EFSA is concerned that many plant-based protein ingredients may contain worrying levels of acrylamide released during processing, an increasing danger for consumers with high intakes, like vegetarians or vegans. SAFE is advocating for lowering the legal maximum levels of #acrylamide throughout the EU and is actively involved in a campaign to raise awareness with our member Chiara Manzi. The #Food4Inclusion project welcomes two new partners from Croatia: the restaurant Zelena Terasa, and the elementary school Osnovna Škola Miroslava Krleže. 🎉 Zelena Terasa joins the Healthy Meal project, aiming at providing nutrititious, affordable and sustainable food to people in precarious situations. Osnovna Škola Miroslava Krleže will organise a nutrition training created by SAFE for children to enhance their food literacy, empower them as future informed consumers and to prevent childhood obesity.

Exciting news! 🎉 Five schools in Greece are now part of the #Food4Inclusion project which gives children access to essential nutrition education through training materials developed by SAFE. 🍎📚 The programme includes two modules: food literacy, where children learn about dietary guidelines, the difference between minimally-processed and ultra-processed foods, high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) foods, and how to read food labels. The second module focuses on obesity prevention, focusing on sugar consumption, the different forms of sugar, and how to calculate daily intake. Empowering the next generation with knowledge for a healthier future! 🌟 #HealthyKids #schooltraining
