About us

The U.S. Embassy is the direct link between the U.S. Government and the Kingdom of Belgium. Connections between Belgium and the United States predate both the founding of the Republic and even the founding of Belgium as a nation-state. Our transatlantic relationship remains more important than ever – and as a fellow founding member of NATO, Belgium remains at the heart of our economic, political, and security alliances that have guaranteed our shared peace, security, and prosperity for more than 70 years. The Embassy is home to over 300 employees representing multiple agencies of the U.S. Government who work tirelessly to deepen the U.S.-Belgian relationship, cooperating with our Belgian partners on a wide range of issues to strengthen our transatlantic ties and our commitment to shared values.

  • Ela was a fantastic intern and it seems that she had a fantastic time at the Embassy this summer! What an excellent match 😍 And she is right, the mission to Brussels is really special, being a Tri-Mission, with delegations to Belgium, the European Union, and NATO. We were glad to have her work with us and wish her all the best in her future professional endeavors.

As my summer internship draws to a close, I wanted to share some of the invaluable experiences I've gained in working for the U.S. Embassy in Belgium these past few months. I was involved in daily reporting to Washington about Belgian economic and political affairs, informing policymakers and their decisions back in the US. Eventually, I was able to write a full length reporting cable on sanctions issues within the EU. This role was particularly important as it coincided with the Belgian presidency of the European Council, highlighting Brussels as an epicenter of political activity throughout the summer. My work focused primarily on environmental issues, but I was able to attend meetings on several other areas of the Economic section's portfolio including cybersecurity, sanctions, and several other topics. In the State Department, we are jokingly told we need to be 'instant experts' in our fields. While I am not an expert yet, I have been incredibly grateful to learn as much as I have about various technical subjects in such a short time. While I have had previous exposure to working in embassies, the mission to Brussels is especially unique -- not only is it a Tri-Mission, with delegations to Belgium, the European Union, and NATO (which I had the privilege of visiting), it also has the largest collection of other US federal agencies in Europe. With the intention of learning more about different career paths in the government, I coordinated information sessions for myself and the 30 other interns to learn from other agencies they may not have known much about before. Through 8 sessions, we were able to meet with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) as well as the Marine Corps detachment in Brussels among several others. It was incredibly enriching to hear about the paths and experiences of senior officials of so many different specialties. Additionally, I was involved in coordinating visits and volunteering at diplomatic events throughout my time at the embassy. I helped coordinate ambassadorial visits to contacts in Belgium but also facilitated visits to the embassy from scholars and other government officials. I volunteered at the Mission's Independence Day event as well, giving me a unique opportunity to support the embassy at one of its largest events and speak with contacts from our allied countries. I would like to thank my section for their support and for providing me with this opportunity, as the team in Pol/Econ made the job fun and provided me with advice that has helped my professional and personal growth. I'd like to thank my supervisor Caryl Merten in particular for her continued support, and for trusting me with important tasks to ensure I made a valuable contribution to the team and the Mission as a whole. I am greatly looking forward to building on this opportunity in the future!

Members of our Embassy team joined the amazing Teach for Belgium staff and teachers on Tuesday to learn more about their program. Teach for Belgium trains and supports motivated Belgians who wish to become teachers for a two-year stint, modeled after a similar program in the United States. It was truly a delight for our staff to see the team in action, and we wish them the best of luck for the upcoming school year!

Today, the Department of State published our 2024 Investment Climate Statements – offering U.S. companies large and small up-to-date, comprehensive information about the investment conditions in more than 160 countries, including Belgium. This report helps American companies continue to pursue high-quality, sustainable investments overseas, and make informed decisions. This resource is not solely for U.S. companies but is available to anyone looking for information about global investment conditions, including foreign governments, business associations, researchers, students, and other international investors. As Jose Fernandez, Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, has said, “The private sector is an essential partner in the State Department’s economic statecraft. For example, small business drives innovation and job creation, not only in our country but around the world. Entrepreneurship provides job growth and opportunity for people around the globe. It drives positive change in societies when everyone – including women and historically underserved communities – has a chance to start and grow their own businesses.” Check the 2024 report for Belgium 🇧🇪 here: https://lnkd.in/e28FzGm2 U.S. Department of State – Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs

Together they create STEM initiatives for youth in Belgium. Over the past seven years, ThinkYoung and Boeing have trained over 1,400 students in coding, 60% girls. Such a great demonstration of our transatlantic ties! Stay tuned to learn more about the initiatives we support.

  • Meet Tim Fabry, the Public Engagement Assistant in the Public Diplomacy Section of U.S. Embassy Brussels. Our Belgian colleague joined the Embassy last year, and he works on cultural and educational programs and exchanges.  Tim works with other organizations in Brussels to create cultural programs with impact. In just the last four months, he's spearheaded a week-long hip-hop program, conducted an exchange between arts and sports organizations that work with people with disabilities, and helped young women leaders get ready for a career in diplomacy. But that's not all Tim does - he also identifies candidates for our exchange programs, prepares them for their time in the United States, and connects with them when they return. In his words: “Working in Public Affairs allows me to meet many interesting and inspiring people. The variety of projects and partners we work with is exciting.” Tim is a creative thinker and a strategic force behind our programs. He also has a terrific sense of humor! Basically, Tim is everything you could want in a colleague, and we're so lucky to have him as part of our team.
