Inspiring Creativity. For Good.

About us

Arts Umbrella is where young artists ages 2-22 cultivate their creativity in Art & Design, Dance, and Theatre, Music & Film. As a non-profit centre for arts education, we believe that art is powerful. Powerful enough to change childrens’ lives in incredible ways. When young people connect with the arts, they gain self-confidence, develop self-discipline, and discover creative expression—qualities they carry with them for life. Arts Umbrella has four locations in Vancouver and Surrey, as well as donor-funded programs at schools, community centres, neighbourhood houses, and healthcare facilities across Metro Vancouver. We reach more than 24,000 students every year, with over 80% served through bursaries, scholarships, and donor-funded programs.

I am incredibly proud of the partnership between painPRO Clinics and the Arts Umbrella Dance Program, a collaboration that has grown beyond my initial expectations. What began as backstage treatments to support dancers before their performances, has blossomed into a comprehensive sponsorship. We now offer weekly on-site care, ensuring that dancers have immediate access to the therapeutic support they need. In addition, dancers in the prestigious graduate program benefit from full access to painPRO's clinical services, enhancing both their physical recovery and overall well-being. This partnership is about more than just injury prevention and treatment—it's about investing in the long-term health and success of these young artists. Dancers, particularly at such a high level, face intense physical demands, and having access to specialized care is crucial for their performance and growth. I feel deeply privileged to play a role in supporting these talented dancers on their journey, helping them achieve their fullest potential both on and off the stage. Special thank you's to Michael Desrochers , Founder and CEO of painPRO for your continued commitment to this cause, and to Arty Gordon, Artistic Director for the Arts Umbrella Dance Program for trusting us to support such a remarkable group of dancers. Together, we are contributing to the future of dance in a meaningful and lasting way.

I couldn't be prouder of Art Exchange, our full-scholarship program for youth (aged 13-15). This long-standing collaboration between Arts Umbrella and Vancouver Art Gallery invites students to explore, critique, and observe exhibitions at the Gallery, then respond to the exhibition by making their work at Arts Umbrella. I am always in awe of the work of these young artists - kudos to Paul Larocque and his team for nurturing this work with such care every year. Art offers such a rare space for free self-expression of emotion, identity, and individuality. It's the gift of a way of seeing that lasts a lifetime. If there's a teen you know who would enjoy this, submissions are open until Sep 20th! Many thanks to the dedicated instructors and staff at both institutions, and a special thanks to visionary supporters Lisa Turner, Terrence Turner, Elmar and Christine Klukas for making it possible for this to be a full scholarship program!

BTY Group is a passionate sponsor of the Arts Umbrella Architecture Summer Intensive. 🏛️🎨   Collaborating with Urbanarium, students gain valuable insights into architecture and urban planning while building connections within the industry.    This initiative empowers young minds to creatively reimagine public spaces and develop a deeper appreciation for the built environment. That is why BTY's own leaders are actively involved in this program, contributing their expertise and supporting the participants as they hone their skills.   The program concludes with a special reception to celebrate the participants’ achievements, where family, friends, and donors gather to recognize their hard work.   Check out photos from the event taken by Devan Francis.     cc: Hannah Owens MRICS, Luis Valenzuela     #Architecture #ArtsUmbrella #CreativeLearning #PublicSpaces #FutureLeaders #CommunitySupport

Arts Education Advocate - Arts Umbrella

Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Arts Umbrella's no-cost Act Your Art Out (AYAO) after-school program at Bear Creek Elementary in Surrey. Witnessing the transformative power of accessible arts education firsthand - as well as the excitement and passion of the students - was truly inspiring! At Arts Umbrella, we address critical issues through no-cost arts education, supporting young people facing anxiety, ADHD, intergenerational trauma, food insecurity, and precarious living situations. With the generous support of the City of Surrey and the Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation (Dylan Van Rooyen), Act Your Art Out provides after-school instruction in art, dance, and theatre at no cost to families or schools. This program creates a space where young people can experience joy, freedom, and self-expression. Each week, students engage in painting, drawing, improv, and theatre games, building artistic skills and confidence without fear of discouragement or judgment. Act Your Art Out supports 45-60 students with emotional, behavioural, learning, and mental health needs, providing a supportive and enriching environment. We are proud to deliver profound life experiences through arts education, inspiring young people to live creative, authentic, and courageous lives.

On Monday, June 24, 2024, we hosted our 27th Nicola Wealth Invitational to Benefit Art Umbrella, and it was an incredible day. The months of hard work by the entire committee, co-led by Co-Chairs Cameron B. Conn and Toby Mallinder, resulted in ensuring that Arts Umbrella could provide even more young people with access to an arts education. Over 40 foursomes showed up to play under blue skies at the prestigious and picturesque Point Grey Golf & Country Club with another group of eager golfers joining in the afternoon to refine their game at our GET GOLF READY Clinic at the Club's state-of-the-art practice facility, The Farm. Each of the holes on the course were animated with interactive golf games, treats for the golfers, and opportunities to donate to Arts Umbrella. An extra large thank you to all of those who contributed at the Bursary hole, helping us set a record amount of funds raised. We cannot forget that none of this would be possible without these and other generous sponsors, who contributed to the overall success of the day. Thank you Martin Thibodeau for the incredibly kind words. We couldn't do what we do without generous supporters like RBC. And that’s a wrap! RBC is proud to once again support Arts Umbrella’s Expressions Festival, a showcase of the talent, creativity, and passion of students in Art & Design, Dance, and Theatre Music & Film. The Art & Design portion featured incredible work from students ages 2-19, including sculpture, painting, drawing, animation, and architecture, highlighting their inspiring talent at every age. The Season Finale dance performances, held at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre from May 23 to May 25, showcased the creativity of some of the world's greatest choreographers and the immense talent of Arts Umbrella dancers, entertaining over 1,600 guests. The Expressions Theatre Festival featured five shows, an Intensive Showcase, and Cabaret Evenings. This year, RBC was also thrilled to support Share the Experience of Live Theatre providing access for schools to attend matinee performances. These shows were seen by 21 public schools, including 2,269 students – giving them a unique opportunity to experience these incredible young actors. RBC is thrilled to support Arts Umbrella and its incredible students at the Expressions Festival each year. In addition to supporting Student Artists, through RBC's Emerging Artists program, we are investing in young artists across Canada and are pleased to announce a multi-year donation in support of Arts Umbrella Dance. This funding will be directed to scholarships that help Arts Umbrella Dance alumni establish professional careers at top companies worldwide. RBC is pleased to provide five scholarships to Arts Umbrella students, facilitating their auditions as they begin the next chapter in their dance journey. For National Indigenous Peoples Day, Arts Umbrella is celebrating Indigenous culture and heritage by featuring one of our Creative Launchpad scholarship students, Taea Rattlesnake. Taea is a theatre student of the Ermineskin Cree Nation in Maskwacis, Alberta and was gifted a Cree name by an elder, making her full name, Taea Kihew Iskwew Rattlesnake. "Being Mixed Indigenous, I find there's a disconnect sometimes in finding a balance of both my backgrounds and I'm excited when a story connects with me, or I can see myself in it," Taea says. Part of both the Half-Day Professional Training Program and Musical Theatre Troupe during her time at Arts Umbrella, Taea, "can't imagine [her] life without theatre, and being able to tell stories that really speak to [her]." Currently in her first year of Musical Theatre at St. Lawrence College, Taea is excited about her future and can't wait to, "start shaping her career in musical theatre - because that's always been the dream!" #NationalIndigenousPeoplesDay And a special shout out to our generous supporters Jeff Mooney and Suzanne Bolton who fund the Creative Launchpad Scholarships. These financial awards are made available to students, like Taea, who are interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate in post-secondary studies across the spectrum of creative fields. #inspiringcreativity
