Municipalities are the backbone of the Canadian economy and the engine that drives growth, productivity and jobs. Repercussions of a trade war will be felt by every Canadian and every community, in every corner of the country.  #CDNMuni are a crucial part of Team Canada’s response. These big city mayors are an invaluable part of Team Canada. They’ve built key cross-border relationships with American businesses, workers, and fellow mayors. They know that we can do big things when Canada and the United States work together.

Ces maires des grandes villes font partie intégrante d’Équipe Canada. Ils ont bâti de fortes relations avec des entreprises, des travailleurs et des maires des États-Unis. Ils savent qu’on peut réaliser de grandes choses quand le Canada et les États-Unis unissent leurs forces.

Big city mayors are united for their residents and all Canadians in the face of current national challenges.    FCM’s Big City Mayors’ Caucus had a full day meeting with federal decision makers, strategizing on municipal response to a U.S. tariff war, and preparing for this year’s federal election.     With key issues of housing affordability, homelessness, infrastructure, public safety, Canada-U.S. relations and the fiscal framework within which #CDNMuni must work laying the foundation of FCM’s advocacy this year, this group of leaders will keep working tirelessly to make life easier for their residents and all Canadians.    We were glad to hear from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the current U.S. tariff situation, and the important role that municipalities play in Team Canada’s response.    Our thanks as well to Minister Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and Minster Mélanie Joly for joining us with your cabinet perspectives on this and other major political files of the day.   #CDNMuni #cdnpoli

Les mairesses et les maires des grandes villes s’unissent au nom de leurs collectivités et de la population canadienne pour faire face aux défis nationaux actuels.     Pendant la journée, les membres du caucus des maires des grandes villes (CMGV) de la FCM ont rencontré des décideurs fédéraux. Ils ont aussi profité de l’occasion pour élaborer une stratégie municipale de réponse aux tarifs douaniers américains et se préparer aux élections fédérales de cette année.      En plus de travailler sans relâche pour améliorer la vie quotidienne des citoyen(ne)s cette année, ces élu(e)s devront se pencher sur le cadre de croissance municipale. C’est avec cette approche qu’il sera possible de s’attaquer aux grandes priorités urgentes, soit le logement abordable, l’itinérance, les infrastructures, la sécurité publique et les relations canado-américaines.    Les membres du CMGV ont été heureux d’entendre les propos du premier ministre Justin Trudeau sur l’importance du rôle que jouent les municipalités dans la réponse canadienne à la situation tarifaire actuelle.     La FCM remercie également le ministre Nathaniel Erskine-Smith et la ministre Mélanie Joly de nous avoir présenté le point de vue du Cabinet sur les grands dossiers politiques de l’heure.      #munican #polcan
