🚨 Crisis in Lebanon: Help Us Protect Children 🚨 More than 1 million children across Lebanon are living in constant fear. Hospitals are destroyed, schools have become shelters, and thousands of children, like those pictured, are driving north with their families looking for safety. On September 23, 50 children were tragically killed in the deadliest day of air strikes to date. The death toll has risen to more than 700 people, with thousands more injured – and the violence is far from over. Our Plan teams in Lebanon are ready to deliver emergency food and offer shelter, cash assistance and life-saving aid, but we urgently need your support. “Fear and anxiety is widespread amongst children and their families, having lived with the looming threat of war since last October,” says our colleague Rachel Challita from Plan International Lebanon. “The past few days have seen air strikes increasing in number and intensity and expanding from the country’s south into Beirut and other areas.” We urgently call for a ceasefire to end this humanitarian crisis. We know that when conflict erupts, children often suffer the most. Until the violence stops, we can offer hope and protection. Battling inequality ⚖️, machismo culture 💪, and lack of awareness 🙋, these young women have emerged as leaders. Today, we’re celebrating women and girls around the world who have stepped into #leadership positions despite many obstacles. The stories of Lourdes, Isabel, and Cindy show just how powerful women can be. All three started their journey with Plan through child sponsorship, Girls Get Equal and seat shares with powerful leaders. Each of these programs created space for these young women to see themselves as future leaders – a vision now made reality by their efforts and achievements. When you donate to Plan International Canada, you’re helping many other Lourdes, Isabels and Cindys. Our sponsorship program alone helped children in 15,670 communities receive added support last year. Ghosts 👻, goblins and horror movies may have you jumping out of your seat this #SpookySeason, but we know something even scarier. 🎃 Nothing is more frightening than the state of inequality for women and girls around the world. The World Economic Forum has projected it will take 132 years to close the global gender gap. How hair-raising is that? At Plan International Canada we believe all children have the right to be healthy, educated, protected, valued and heard. Unfortunately, many children, especially girls, aren’t getting to assert these rights. Instead, they can’t make decisions about their bodies, or don’t have enough to eat, or out of school – or all of the above. We know that creating healthier, more resilient communities starts with championing equality for girls! That’s why we work to tackle gender inequality from the root, working to remove barriers that stop girls from reaching their full potential and having a better future of her choosing. Last year we helped over 100,000 people receive SRHR education. In Ethiopia alone we helped prevent 9,000 marriages for girls under 15. Learn more about why we focus on girls here: https://bit.ly/48tUHks #GenderInequality #GirlsEquality #GirlsRights #GenderGap

Meet Malak from #Lebanon. Malak is a 19-year-old youth activist who had to flee her home after her village came under attack by Israeli air strikes. A week later, she learned her home had been destroyed. Watch the video for Malak’s emotional story. Since September 23, more than 2,100 people in Lebanon have been killed – including 127 children. An estimated 1.2 million people have been displaced by the escalating attacks. In a country of 6 million, that’s one in six people. All of the country’s public schools remain closed, and the start of the new school year has been delayed until November. Many schools are now operating as shelters. To accommodate all of the people seeking safety, there is an urgent need for mattresses, blankets, food kits, hygiene kits and more. We’re joining forces with 11 other Canadian charities through Humanitarian Coalition | Coalition Humanitaire to respond to this escalating violence. By giving, you’ll help provide critical essentials to families who urgently need shelter, food, and hygiene items to survive. By donating to our joint appeal, your donations will be matched by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada up to $3 million, until November 3. 🔗Donate now: https://bit.ly/3Ur5eHg
