Each year, millions of women around the globe transition into menopause. This perimenopausal phase involves hormone fluctuations that can negatively impact sleep, cause hot flashes and lead to weight gain. This time also puts women at greater risk of developing dementia. Noticing cognitive decline in her mother and grandmother, Diana Ljuljovic joined a study led by VCHRI investigator Teresa Liu-Ambrose, PhD, PT, which aimed to examine the effects of exercise on the cognitive health of perimenopausal women. "I say yes to participate in research because not only are you most likely going to benefit yourself, but you will also help others find effective ways to better themselves with tested and proven methods," says Diana. When it comes to stroke diagnosis and treatment, timing is everything: for every minute delay in treatment, 1.9 million brain cells are lost. Endovascular Therapy (EVT) is a quick and effective stroke treatment that can be used to remove clots and restore blood flow to the brain. EVT is currently only available at Vancouver General Hospital, which creates care challenges for patients from Coastal communities who need specialized stroke treatment. A diverse team across VCH is piloting a new initiative that will expand the use of AI-driven imaging software to our Coastal hospitals. “This technology will quickly analyze CT scans, determining the severity of a stroke and alerting VGH neurologists right away if EVT is needed, " says Kelly Sharp, Regional Stroke Lead.
