The roof is the key element of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Conghua Racecourse – a catenary structure that clearly defines the Grandstand as a place, welcoming visitors and creating a gathering place for all. The structure marks the main entry point and ushers visitors through a range of activities and experiences that unfold over the course of race day. It both opens and focuses views across all activities within the Grandstand and beyond, all the while collecting enough solar energy to cover the project’s operational use. On-site in Guangzhou, where construction of the The Hong Kong Jockey Club Conghua Racecourse Grandstand is progressing rapidly. The catenary roof, comprising a total of 20,000 photovoltaic panels, will finish installation by mid-2025. Once completed, the roof will be able to generate sufficient energy for the Grandstand’s operational use. The hanging roof drops down to nearly ground level, its gently curved silhouette and green tone echoing the dense tree canopies covering the surrounding mountains and valleys. Fasnacht as seen beside the Alte Hauptpost in the heart of Basel's city center. With its oldest parts dating back to the 14th century, the Hauptpost building has been witness to some of the earliest incarnations of the Basel Carnival. The Hauptpost is currently undergoing careful renovation in collaboration with historic preservation authorities. When complete, its ground floor public spaces and passage will be reopened to the city once again. On-site at the Hauptpost Basel, a multi-layered building that dates back to the 14th century. After careful analysis with conservation authorities, later additions are being dismantled and the original spatial flow restored, preserving as much as possible of this historic building in the city center. Once complete, the passageway between Gerbergasse and Freier Strasse will again be an inviting place for pedestrians. The technical storeys in the inner courtyard have been removed to reinstate a former atrium bringing down to the ground floor. The levels above will be dedicated for offices that offer generous daylight and high ceilings. A new pitched roof will carefully blend with the surrounding roofscape and feature a terrace that offers views over the historic city center. This significant milestone was marked by a two-part event: a signing ceremony where students, representatives from Amherst College, and project contributors inscribed their names on the final timber panel, followed by the lifting and installation of the last beam. The building emphasizes sustainability through the reuse of the former Merrill Science Center’s structure and the incorporation of mass-timber construction, which aligns with the college’s climate action plan. On-site in the soon-to-be planted courtyard of HORTUS with Alexander Sadao Franz (who leads our Sustainable Projects group) and Piet Oudolf. Once complete, HORTUS will be accessed through this open-air atrium—the green oasis at the heart of the building. The atrium, an outdoor recreational space for employees in the offices above, houses a garden irrigated by collected rainwater which also serves as a habitat for a variety of plants and animals; climbing vines growing along the courtyard facades filter CO2 and other pollutants, contributing to a comfortable and healthy atmosphere.
