This month, devastating #landslides struck the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea resulting in large-scale destruction and loss of lives. Changes in weather patterns have resulted in the occurrence of landslides in many regions of the world, making it crucial to strengthen mechanisms for early detection and prevention. It becomes necessary during such times to have practical knowledge for assistance, to maximize safety and ensure protection against harm. We here at Shelter Centre have compiled a variety of practical resources into a collection on our Humanitarian Library that includes guidance on the prevention, control and mitigation of landslides. Please access the collection by clicking the link below- https://lnkd.in/gSuezXvW #naturaldisasters #landslidesafety #landslideassistance #landslidepreparedness #disasterriskreduction

The Humanitarian Library is dedicated to finding the best free technical guidance for humanitarian workers and making it accessible to everyone in different languages. Every day, new practical guidelines are being published by operational humanitarian agencies around the world, such as on how to respond to Covid-19. The Humanitarian Library uploads and shares guidelines, so humanitarians can find them easily, for free, with no login, and in any language. We celebrate and support publishing organisations and other libraries by linking back to them. We also create collections of guidelines to support daily operational activities in each sector, with humanitarian agencies. All humanitarians can upload guidelines to the Library, real time, using your UNOCHA Humanitarian ID login. It is your Library - learn what works, share what works! Hello, my name is Millicent Sewe, from Kenya! I started working at Shelter Centre in February. For the past month, #Kenya has been experiencing heavy rains resulting in severe #flooding in different parts of the country. The heavy rains have displaced thousands, destroyed homes, and significantly impacted agriculture and the economy. #ClimateChange and inadequate infrastructure have intensified the #EnvironmentalImpact and human impact of these floods. Counties affected severely by the #KenyaFloods include Nairobi, especially in low-income neighborhoods such as Mathare, Mukuru Kwa Jenga, and Kariobangi, other counties including West Pokot, Nakuru, Kiambu, Nyeri, Machakos, Mandera, Embu, Meru, Laikipia, Isiolo, Bomet, and Uasin Gishu. Communities, humanitarians and the government have been working together to provide immediate relief and develop long-term solutions for #DisasterRelief, #CommunityResilience, and #SustainableDevelopment. Immediate support and sustainable practices are essential to mitigate future disasters. Shelter Centre through the Humanitarian Library provides guidelines that will help guide you on approaching flood situations before, during and after. Here is the link to our collection of valuable resources on #FloodResilient Shelter Reconstruction, Retrofitting, and Repair Technical Guidelines: https://lnkd.in/gHwZYa5f

"About 40,000 children have been displaced as a result of the severe flooding in #Afghanistan last week according to Save the Children International. #Climatechange #climateadaptation #resilience are key to reducing the impact and devastation from floods. Learning from past #climate related events can inform how #humanitarians prepare for the future. With an increase of flooding and other natural hazards around the world including in #Brazil #UAE #Indonesia #Kenya, all of us at Shelter Centre have compiled resources from International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC Oxfam IOM - UN Migration in our collection, 'Flood Resilient Shelter Case Studies and Reports', available over at the Humanitarian Library. Hi everybody! My name is Alfonso Ochoa de Zabalegui, coming to you from the Netherlands! Having grown up in the Philippines and travelled all around South East Asia over the years, I've closely bonded with the environment and biodiversity. Unfortunately, I have also seen how they are affected by the growing effects of climate change. Putting my best foot forward to contribute, I've volunteered as a technical diver supporting coral planting and reef restoration with local NGOs in the Philippines. I joined Shelter Centre earlier this year to deepen my knowledge and experience in disaster risk reduction and through the Humanitarian Library, I've found a wealth of resources that have inspired me to think of the many ways I can make a positive impact. Take a look at the collection: 'Disaster Risk Reduction: Multisectoral Guidance' over at the Humanitarian Library, with resources from United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC and Save the Children International, supporting both aid workers and local communities on how to respond and build back better in post-disaster contexts.
