🚀 Code Release: "Find the Connection" – My Hackathon-Winning Project! 🚀 Two weeks ago, I had the incredible experience of being one of the winning Best Overall Project at the OpenSource.Construction Hackathon 2025 in Zürich! 🏆 Our project, Find the Connection, tackled the challenge of intelligent connection detection in BIM models using graph traversal and AI-powered product matching. Although the codes are still under development but as promised, I’m now open-sourcing the code on GitHub! 🔥(and yes my github name is JanMeow 🤣 ) 🔗 GitHub Repository: [https://lnkd.in/gniM2Qie] 🔍 What’s Inside? The repository contains two major components: 1️⃣ Find the Connection – IFC to Graph Conversion & Collision Detection Converts an IFC model into a graph data structure, which simultaneously acts as an AABB BVH tree for broad-phase collision detection. Uses Corner Connection Analysis (DFS-based loop detection) to verify if wall nodes can traverse back to themselves in 3-4 steps. Collision refinement with GJK (Gilbert-Johnson-Keerthi) algorithm. Boolean operations on Trimesh powered by Manifold3D for precise geometric verification and interative 3D visualization using Pyglett. 🚧 Coming Soon: Mid-phase collision detection with OOBB (Oriented Bounding Box) and SAT (Separating Axis Theorem) for fun! 😆 2️⃣ Component Matching – AI-Driven Product Search A RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) approach to match components using vector embeddings. Extracts text from PDF catalogs, summarizes it using an LLM, and stores embeddings in a vector database (ChromaDB) for efficient search. 🚀 Future Plans: 🔹 Train a segmentation model for extracting visual details from product catalogs. 🔹 Integrate with Neo4j for direct graph-based querying of connections. 💡 Why Open Source? I believe in collaboration, innovation, and learning from each other. On the second February weekend of 2025, we welcomed around 200 passionate innovators in Zurich/Winterthur at the ZHAW Architektur, Gestaltung und Bauingenieurwesen — with approx. 100 digital doers actively hacking their way to new ideas. Special thanks to Prof. Katharina Lindenberg and the Institute for Digital Construction and Wood Industry (BFH Architektur, Holz und Bau) for leading the Friday focus session on the digital future of timber construction. In the Hackathon, we had six diverse hackathon challenges – and so many ideas. 13 teams showcased their incredible work, with six receiving special recognition from our jury 🏆. The innovators worked on... 👉 comparing graph representations of floor plans 👉finding and categorizing connection points between elements in 3d models 👉 leveraging LLMs to make hidden knowledge accessible 👉 building infrastructure to exchange data across silos 👉 making underground voxel data accessible to the masses 👉finally bridging the gap between annotations in 2D plans and 3D models 👉 building data base infrastructure for used windows 👉 speeding up the permission process through smart technology 👉 building open geometry kernels 👉 automating data extraction from weak models based on data blocks 👉 using latest automation tools to derive and link structured data from 2d plans and maintenance reports 🎬 Want to learn more about the results?
