I spoke to artist Béatrice Lartigue about her work 'The Big Smoke' which visualises the effects of air pollution in Paris. 'The Big Smoke' is a collection of 19 digital images presenting a fictionalised, dream-like version of Paris, where historical and modern architectural elements are cloaked in colourful clouds. The colours in the images correlate with real air quality metrics, blending the language of environmental data with architectural photography. The project raises awareness of pollution and provides a tangible way of visualising intangible air quality data. Thanks for this important research! What’s fascinating—and not just with this study—is that the average data points are taken from a five-year span. Another study, this time from Thailand, investigates the impact of #airpollution on the #skinmicrobiome by comparing healthy women of similar age from two Thai cities with distinct #airquality levels (Bangkok, known for high pollution (HPA, n = 33), and Songkhla, with lower pollution (LPA, n = 33). #Skinbarrier function parameters were assessed on forehead skin, while microbiome samples were collected via scraping and swabbing techniques and analyzed through amplicon sequencing. At the phylum level, the abundance of microbiome was comparable between HPA- and LPA-exposed skin. However, HPA exposure reduced microbiome diversity at the genus level for #fungi and the species level for bacteria. Some microbial enrichments showed correlations with skin barrier parameters: a higher presence of Streptococcus parasanguinis on LPA-exposed skin correlated with lower skin pH and higher stratum corneum (SC) hydration, whereas higher levels of Malassezia spp. and Aureobasidium spp. on HPA-exposed skin correlated with increased transepidermal water loss and reduced SC hydration. Yet another proof that air pollution influences the skin microbiome by reducing its diversity, disrupting beneficial correlations with skin barrier #physiology and promoting overgrowth of potentially #pathogenic #microbiota . These changes can lead to decreased hydration, increased pH levels, and potential skin barrier dysfunction.
