🌍 Key takeaways and next steps: A2EI at #GOGSFE24, Nairobi 🇰🇪 The Access to Energy Institute (A2EI) team has just returned from GOGLA’s #GOGSFE in Nairobi. We were present with our open source data platform Prospect (a collaboration with GET.invest), our brand-new low-cost asynchronous electricity meter, and the financing facility GGF. Also, we were the Knowledge Sponsor of the conference. Here are our key takeaways: 1️⃣ Data-Driven Impact Transparency 📊 We’ve confirmed that transparent, digital, data-based impact assessment is crucial for advancing energy access. It allows us to: ▫️Measure real progress ▫️Identify effective electrification strategies ▫️Reduce transaction costs while improving precision of reporting ▫️Build trust with stakeholders ▫️Guide policy decisions ▫️Optimize existing subsidy programs through data-driven feedback loops The power of data (#StopGuessing) enables us to fine-tune subsidy programs for maximum impact, ensuring resources reach those who need them most. 2️⃣ Innovative Solutions for Universal Access ⚡ Hundreds of millions still lack basic energy access. While private sector innovation is crucial, it’s clear that market forces alone won’t achieve universal access. We need: ▫️Creative approaches to reach underserved populations (e.g. the Rural Energy Access Lab) ▫️A stable and targeted subsidy landscape across all markets ▫️Public-private partnerships to support the most vulnerable ▫️Sustainable funding mechanisms to ensure long-term accessibility The reality is stark: universal energy access cannot be achieved by the private sector alone – we must combine commercial solutions with smart subsidy programs to reach those most in need. 3️⃣ Reforming Carbon Markets 🌱 Current carbon markets and standards aren’t inclusive of the energy access sector. This needs to change to: ▫️Recognize our sector’s contribution to climate change mitigation ▫️Support adaptation efforts in vulnerable communities ▫️Unlock new funding streams for energy access initiatives ▫️Increase trust and transparency while reducing costs through digital verification 4️⃣ Tackling Financial Barriers 💰 Access to affordable finance, especially for small-scale projects, remains a significant hurdle. We’re focusing on: ▫️Developing innovative financing models (e.g. GGF) ▫️Engaging with financial institutions to create tailored solutions ▫️Advocating for policies that facilitate small-ticket investments in energy access ➡️ The path to universal energy access is complex, but with collaboration, innovation, and persistence, we can light up every corner of the world. Join us in this crucial mission! 🔆 #EnergyAccess #ClimateAction #SustainableFinance #A2EI

We kicked off #GOGSFE24 in Nairobi on Tuesday with an inspiring panel discussion on transforming #ImpactFinance through digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (#dMRV)! 🔆 The session was hosted by Prospect and GET.invest, with welcome remarks from John T. of GET.invest, and moderated by Stuti Dubey from The D-REC Organisation. Ahid Maeresera of COMESA Secretariat and Ocanya Samuel of Uganda Energy Credit Capitalisation Company started the discussion by presenting the digital approaches of the The World Bank Group's ASCENT Program and the Energy Access Scale-Up Project, respectively, laying out the complex landscape of systems and players involved in transitioning traditional energy financing models to automated digital, data-driven approaches. “The complexity is significant, and requires a lot of adaptation from numerous stakeholders in the program and all at once, not just one after another,” said Mr Maeresera, noting some of the challenges in building this digital ecosystem to serve the markets that ASCENT will support. But the necessity is clear, he noted, especially as ASCENT aims to bring climate finance into the mix at a scale not yet seen before. Mr Ocanya stressed though the advantages, comparing the original monitoring and verification process with their soon-to-be-launched digital platform (powered by Prospect), which should drastically reduce the time it takes for money to be disbursed to projects. That may sound good on its face, but does a dramatic shift to digital threaten to leave some projects –and potentially key information– behind? “My concern is that we miss out on the human interactions and even warmth that our business is based on,” said Moliehi Shale, Managing Director of NalaPayGo. Petra Mikkolainen, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Manager at Nefco - the Nordic Green Bank, also emphasized the need for more thoughtful and holistic approaches. “We shouldn’t just be collecting data for the sake of collecting data,” she said; rather we must take a step-by-step approach, and make sure we learn from our experiences in bringing digital services into the sector. Brianna Schuyler, Director of Digital Product at Access to Energy Institute, agreed: “what we are really hoping to achieve is to empower energy companies to have more time and resources to focus on serving their customers.” Ultimately, the transition to digital isn’t really something we can afford to miss, said Mr Ocanya. “Even if I like riding a horse, I won’t continue to take my horse from Nairobi to Mombasa if I can use a car, because it provides so much value to me in my life and business.” The insightful discussion highlighted the importance of verified, reliable, and real-time #data to secure financing, plan electrification strategies, and run energy-service companies. We're excited to be able to provide the #energyaccess sector with #Prospect as a tool to facilitate this, and to continue to work collaboratively on solutions to achieve #SDG7!
