The city of Chongqing in southwestern China is known for its subtropical climate with mild winters and a frequently foggy atmosphere. The Grand Theater is located here on a peninsula overlooking the Yangtze River. The unique location with a view of the city skyline, combined with the sculptural architecture, has made the building an iconic landmark. A stone platform forms its base, while the layout and elevation – despite their expressiveness – strictly follow the functional requirements. The light seeping from the inside to the outside, the reflections of light and water on the variously inclined and refracted glass surfaces, make the building appear in ever-changing lighting conditions. Two concert halls with their foyers lie on the longitudinal axis, as if on the keel line of a ship, and thus form the entrance areas at the ‘bow’ and ‘stern’. The exhibition hall in the center connects all the foyer areas of the theater. Our architecture office is deeply rooted in Hamburg. Just a five-minute bike ride from our headquarters on Elbchaussee lies our second office: the Rainvilleterrasse Campus. This historic building has always been a place of exchange and learning. Originally home to the Altona Nautical School, the building, which was listed as a historic monument in 2012, was carefully renovated and extended according to plans by gmp. Today, it not only houses our office but also the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) – a place for academic exchange in the field of architecture. A special highlight for our team: our beloved cafeteria! Every day, Julian, Sunny, and Patricia treat us to freshly prepared lunches made from high-quality ingredients. In doing so, they continue the long-standing tradition of gastronomy and hospitality at the Rainvilleterrasse. With the new headquarters of the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have realized a model project for sustainable building in the Chinese business metropolis of Guangzhou. The high-rise features a natural ventilation system based on the solar chimney principle. Taking into account the conditions of the subtropical climate, the building was largely designed for natural ventilation. A facade with integrated photovoltaic louvers provides shade while contributing to sustainable energy generation. With 7,800 square meters of photovoltaic modules integrated into the façade and roof, the system produces approximately 650,000 kilowatt-hours annually, covering the building’s entire energy needs. These measures significantly reduce energy consumption compared to modern benchmark buildings. Additionally, all operational processes are continuously monitored through an innovative carbon management platform, the first in China to enable real-time forecasting of CO₂ emissions by time, zone, and category. gmp is strengthening its management team with three new partners! Jochen Köhn, Karsten Schillings and Jan Stolte are no strangers: All three have been part of the gmp team for many years and have distinguished themselves through their commitment and expertise. 👉 Jochen Köhn Jochen Köhn joined the gmp team in 1991, while still studying architecture at RWTH Aachen University. He has been a partner since 2025 and is responsible for contract design, fees and personnel development at the Berlin office. He has successfully managed numerous major projects. 👉 Karsten Schillings Karsten Schillings has been part of gmp in Hamburg since 2008, where he has been Head of Construction Management since 2015. He is our specialist for complex construction contracts. He lectured at HafenCity University Hamburg for ten years and at Wismar University of Applied Sciences. 👉Jan Stolte After studying at the TU Braunschweig and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Jan Stolte joined gmp in the Hamburg office in 2005. He specializes in office and administration buildings, conversion projects and buildings for teaching and research. Since it was founded in 1965 by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg, gmp has been managed by a circle of partners. Our architecture office von Gerkan, Marg and Partners was founded in Hamburg in 1965. To this day, we have completed more projects here than in any other city. Our colleagues work at two locations in the Hanseatic city - one of which is our headquarters on Elbchaussee in Othmarschen. The building, designed by Meinhard von Gerkan and completed in 1990, picks up on maritime elements. With its white facade and striking shape, it is reminiscent of a ship lying across the Elbe River from the port of Hamburg. A particular highlight is the rotunda on the top floor - a meeting room with a panoramic view of the Elbe, passing steamers and another Hamburg landmark: the Köhlbrand Bridge. Both our founding partner, Volkwin Marg, and Executive Partner Magdalena Weiß have their offices here. Currently, around 100 colleagues work at the Elbchaussee location. The Pressehaus am Alexanderplatz is a remarkable piece of Berlin’s architectural history. Built between 1970 and 1973 as the “Haus des Berliner Verlages”, it was designed by architects Karl-Ernst Swora, Rainer Hanslik, Günter Derdau, Waldemar Seifert and Gerhard Voss as a counterpart to the Axel Springer publishing building in West Berlin. We were proud to be responsible for the conversion and extension of this ensemble. We carefully reestablished the original facade, restored the long-hidden programmatic frieze of the press café and, with the ‘New Podium’, created a complementary new building that establishes an urban connection to the neighboring Scheunenviertel. The Pressehaus am Alexanderplatz was shortlisted for the DAM Prize 2025 and will be on display in the exhibition 'DAM Prize 2025 - The Best Buildings in/from Germany' at the DAM Ostend in Frankfurt am Main from February 1 to April 27, 2025.
