  • Exciting news! gmp, in collaboration with schlaich bergermann partner sbp, has received a direct commission for a brand new sports center in Longgang, China. Now, the construction has officially begun in this eastern coastal city! This vibrant area will soon feature a residential quarter with two schools and a shopping center nearby. The plans include a 16,000-seat stadium with covered stands, a sports center with a swimming pool, halls for various ball sports, a fitness center, and retail spaces. The sports halls will also be used by the local schools. The stadium's stands, arranged on one side and covered by a crescent-shaped membrane roof, offer a stunning southeast view of the sea. The L-shaped sports center, bordered by streets on the north and west, includes usable roof areas and connects to the stadium on multiple levels. Want more details? • We are proud to have been part of the team that brought the Elbbrücken Station to life, in collaboration with schlaich bergermann partner sbp. Positioned at the easternmost tip of HafenCity, this station plays a crucial role in enhancing the connectivity of the district by extending the U4 Underground line to meet the Elbbrücken bridges. This extension, combined with the S-Bahn station, creates an efficient and attractive interchange for commuters. One of the station's unique features is its transition from underground to above ground, running parallel to the iconic Elbbrücken bridges. Our design draws inspiration from these architectural landmarks, incorporating the sweeping steel arches of the Freihafenelbbrücken bridges and the distinctive “fish beams” of the Neue Elbbrücke. The elevated steel bridge offers a seamless access point to the skywalk, linking the underground station directly to the S-Bahn station. Since its official opening in 2018, the Elbbrücken Station has stood as a testament to innovative design and engineering. • Together together with China IPPR International Engineering Co., Ltd we have won the competition for the construction of the Fangshan Campus of Xuanwu Hospital! We are delighted to be able to implement this project. It belongs to the Capital Medical University and the National Medical Center in Beijing. The design is based on the concept of “symbiosis”. The two groups of buildings on the north and south sides form two independent and interacting neurons and connect the buildings on three levels: medical, clinical and planning. While the façade is inspired by brain waves, combining glass and shading for optimal conditions, the landscape design is based on neuronal forms. The multi-level themed gardens and terraces, interwoven between vertical and horizontal spaces on different levels, provide a comfortable space for patients and staff. © Lighting CG #gmp #gmpArchitekten #gmpNews #healthcampus #healthcare #hospital #medicalcenter

Exciting guests at our Berlin office: Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryūe Nishizawa recently visited our office in Berlin together with colleagues from her architecture firm Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA (Tokyo), architectural historian Carsten Krohn and students from Yokohama National University. Together with her students, Kazuyo is currently working on a model building of the Berlin State Library. Stephan Schütz (gmp executive partner) and Christian Hellmund (gmp partner) were on hand to answer questions about its conversion. The Berlin State Library is part of the “Kulturforum Berlin” (“Berlin Cultural Forum”). It was built from 1967 to 1978 according to plans by architect Hans Scharoun, with significant input from his colleague Edgar Wisniewski. In 2019, gmp was awarded the contract for the refurbishment and conversion of the Potsdamer Straße building in line with its listed status. It was an honor to welcome Kazuyo Sejima, Ryūe Nishizawa and her peers to Berlin. Three schools at three locations: The "Allianz 3 Schulen" has been founded in Bremerhaven in December 2021. The planning and construction are taking a completely new approach: The client, the architects and specialist planners and the construction companies are working together as an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). This makes the construction project the first IPD project in the public sector in the field of building construction in Germany. A new milestone in this special project has now been reached on time: the topping-out ceremony was held at the school center on Hamburger Strasse on Wednesday, August 7, marking the imminent completion of the shell construction work! The installation of the façades is also already in full swing and the finishing and technical building services work has begun inside the building – meaning that all alliance partners have actively started the construction work! The project alliance is working together as an integral team and using BIM and LEAN methods to find the best solutions, as in a "temporary company" from the project idea onwards and across company boundaries. We are proud of the team and what we have achieved together so far and look forward to further successful and collaborative partnerships with our alliance partners. 𝙐𝙈𝘽𝘼𝙐. 𝙉𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙥 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 goes on: we are showing our exhibition in New York and Berlin! Using examples from our projects, gmp has been presenting the office's conversion practice since last year – in October 2024, the traveling exhibition will now be at the 𝗚𝗼𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲-𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝗿𝗸 and at the 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗸𝘁𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻, each with a different with a different focus. In Berlin, gmp is showing the exhibition UMBAU.Nonstop Transformation at the Architektur Galerie Berlin. Along with the Dresden Kulturpalast, the Hyparschale in Magdeburg and the Pressehaus at Alexanderplatz, the exhibition at Architektur Galerie Berlin showcases three successful examples of how to convert and preserve East German modernist buildings. UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation at Goethe-Institut in New York will focus on the current global challenges relating to building conversions using examples of different building typologies. The transformation of high-rise buildings will be a topic, as will the conversion of cultural and sports buildings in Europe and Asia, including the recently completed Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid and the Isarphilharmonie in Munich. The exhibition is part of the Archtober architecture and design festival in New York and will also be featured during the Open House New York Weekend. 𝗨𝗠𝗕𝗔𝗨. Just another day at … Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid, Spain! From a sports stadium to a multifunctional arena: the conversion of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium is completed! The old Bernabéu’s disparate mix of architecture has been transformed into an innovative and versatile multifunctional arena. Over the past decade, the stadium has been remodeled and expanded according to a comprehensive master plan. The stadium’s prior capacity of approximately 80,000 seats is increased by nearly 2,000 seats. Above the upper tiers, a new level with a total of 240 VIP and hospitality lounges offers as many as 1,600 additional seats. A retractable lawn gives way to a fixed ground slab that enables a wide range of events beyond sports. A retractable roof allows the stadium to adapt flexibly to any weather conditions. • The university city in Yerevan, Armenia will unite 26 universities that are currently spread across the city. A modern educational environment is being created on an urban scale with synergies for higher education and research. The campus will be complemented by apartments and leisure facilities such as sports venues, theaters, a concert hall, the National Museum and commercial spaces. Academic City aims to internationalize university life in Armenia: The goal is to have four higher education institutions ranked among the global top 500 by 2030 and to double the number of international students. The project is being developed in the north-west of the city, approximately 10 km from the city center, covering an area of 580 hectares - comparable to the area of Berlin's Tegel Airport. A railroad line runs through the area, for which the design envisages a new station – marking the center of the university city. Based on this, the planning follows the principle of Transit Oriented Development (TOD), which strengthens pedestrian movement and public transportation. Initially, four thematically structured clusters will be developed along a central axis: A center for start-ups, technology and agriculture. Another sector for culture and art with a concert hall and the National Museum of Armenia. There will also be a region for education research and an office park. The project is conceived as a "dynamic" planning process, enabling the phased realization of the Academic City. The master plan envisions a new urban district that combines all urban functionalities and uses. From the outset, local participation and on-site workshops are part of the planning. For the majority of respondents, the focus is on networking and interdisciplinary exchange. These insights will be used in the ongoing process to create a place that continues to offer space for personal encounters in times of digitalization. #gmp #gmpArchitects #gmpNews #AcademicCity #Yerevan #Armenia #UrbanPlanning #UrbanDevelopment

  • The headquarters of the Internet company #vipshop in the Chinese port city was already completed four years ago according to plans by gmp. The vip Creative Center is intended to serve as a creative center for the fashion industry with a mixture of offices, workshops, stores, exhibition areas, and restaurants. The building’s centerpiece is a ten-story atrium in which the floors project and recede, making the processes and results of the creative work come alive via display cases and presentation areas. A 140-meter residential tower rises above the plinth area, its elongated orientation providing inhabitants with a view of the Pearl River located directly in front of the site. The slight bend in the tower’s floor plan also makes it possible to enjoy a view of the river from apartments on the shorter sides and incorporates the tower into the vibrant and sweeping shape of the podium. #gmp #gmpArchitects #gmpNews #vipCreativCenter #Guangzhou #China

  • The conversion of the iconic stadium of record champions Real Madrid is complete! The geometry of the outer shell follows the principles of form-finding and form-making, taking into account both functional considerations and a desire to give the stadium a new sculptural form. Curved stainless steel louvers give the Bernabéu a whole new character and emphasize its status as a Madrid landmark. The horizontal gaps between the metal slats allow for natural ventilation of the stadium’s interior. From a distance, the metal structure coalesces into a sparkling jewel that reflects daylight in myriad ways depending on one’s angle of view. We are especially pleased that the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu will be the venue for the final of the WorldCup in 2030.
