In the Chinese and Vietnamese zodiac, the snake represents wisdom, intelligence, elegance, and determination. • Balthasar Neumann Award 2025: On January 15, 2025, the European Prize for Architecture and Engineering was presented at the BAU trade fair in Munich. Our team received a commendation for the Hyparschale in Magdeburg. We are delighted to receive this recognition, which honors our efforts to restore and modernize Ulrich Müther's shell roof structure in accordance with historic preservation standards. We are glad to be able to have given this architectural icon a new lease of life as a venue for congresses and exhibitions after 20 years of vacancy. We would like to thank DBZ Deutsche BauZeitschrift and BDB.BB - Bund Deutscher Baumeister, Architekten und Ingenieure e.V. Berlin-Brandenburg for this recognition and and congratulate all the winning teams. • Stadt Hanau has commissioned gmp with the refurbishment of the Kaufhof building! We are very pleased about this exciting construction task - by converting the building, we can contribute to the development of the city so that it remains attractive for its residents in the future. The framework agreement comprises two service phases in the first step: Basic assessment and then preliminary planning with the aim of refurbishing the property in terms of energy efficiency and building services. In future, further measures of the agreement will include project planning, structural design, technical building services, building physics, fire protection and pollutant remediation. To award the planning services, the city carried out a negotiated award with a competitive tender, in which gmp's offer achieved the highest score. • We are delighted that our UMBAU of the Alsterschwimmhalle was featured in Dezeen. From 2020 to 2023, the Alsterschwimmhalle was extensively renovated, converted and extended. The spectacular shell roof, the impressive interior with its 50-meter pool, and the facade construction were retained. “gmp Architekten's overhaul ensures the focal point of the structure remains its heritage-listed roof, which is formed of two soaring hyperbolic paraboloid structures crafted from prestressed concrete,” the magazine writes in its article. "The necessary extensions were carefully integrated into the overall ensemble with respect for the existing listed building," Dezeen quotes gmp's detailed design lead, Jörn Ortmann. Thanks again for featuring our work, Dezeen! • Three museums collectively form the “Changchun Museum for Culture, Fine Arts and Science” in the northeast of China. The three cube-like stone blocks of the museum are arranged around a central entrance building like the sails of a windmill. Lofty, individually tailored atriums inside the cube-like blocks function as central lobbies and give each museum a unique character: the lobby for the Museum of Culture is derived from the shape of a deep canyon, the atrium of the Museum of Fine Arts features clear diagonals, and the Museum of Science has a central foyer that cuts into the solid mass in right angles. In all three museums, a square-shaped route leads visitors from one exhibition area to the next on all levels. Bridges cross the central atrium of each museum in four places to facilitate orientation within the building. In addition, visitors get impressive views both in the central halls of individual museums and of the landscape and museum park that surrounds the museum complex. • We look back with gratitude on a successful 2024: We were pleased with the significant progress made on ongoing projects, notable completions, and exciting new commissions. In 2024, our designs stood out in numerous competitions, including the Ortenau Klinikum Lahr health campus and the energy-efficient refurbishment of Stuttgart Airport. We were also proud to celebrate several completions: the Bernabéu Stadium has already received numerous architectural awards, and the Hyparschale in Magdeburg continues to enjoy widespread recognition. In China, particular highlights include competition wins for the university campus in Wuxi and the Beijing Children's Hospital, as well as the completion of the East Railway Station in Nanchang and the ICCF Garden conversion project for the ICICLE fashion group. Our exhibition “UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation” embarked on its most extensive journey to date: in the fall of last year, it traveled to the Goethe-Institut in New York. In October, it was also on display at the Architekturgalerie in Berlin. The exhibition attracted numerous enthusiastic visitors and helped to raise awareness of this important topic. Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) was the starting point of our architecture firm von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects. A highlight was the 50th anniversary of Tegel in the fall of 2024. In December 2024, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of our Vietnam office. On this occasion, gmp Founding Partner Volkwin Marg and Executive Partner Nikolaus Goetze celebrated the anniversary together with guests from the fields of politics, culture, business, and architecture. We would like to thank our teams for their team spirit, outstanding work and the successes achieved, as well as our project partners. We wish everyone a good start to 2025! • Meinhard von Gerkan would have turned 90 on 3 January 2025 – on this day, we commemorate our founding partner and visionary architect. The architectural guidelines of our office's dialogue-based design: simplicity, unity in diversity, uniqueness, and structural order are particularly evident in Meinhard von Gerkan's design drawings. Here you can see: Villa Guna, the Hanoi Museum, MUK Lübeck, Berlin Central Station, and Chongqing Grand Theatre. His architectural legacy will continue to inspire us. We thank Meinhard von Gerkan for his vision and lasting influence. #gmp #gmpArchitects #gmpNews © gmp

  • gmp says thank you: Farewell to Hubert Nienhoff and Nikolaus Goetze With the turn of the year, we bid farewell to two of our long-standing Executive Partners – Hubert Nienhoff and Nikolaus Goetze are concluding their active careers at gmp. With team spirit, creative energy, and a passion for architecture, they have significantly shaped the development of gmp over the decades. Hubert Nienhoff, a partner at gmp in Berlin since 1993, helped establish this branch of the practice in the 1990s. In collaboration with Volkwin Marg, he was responsible for the design of the New Leipzig Trade Fair and the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, as well as numerous stadiums for the FIFA World Cups in South Africa and Brazil - thus paving the way for new projects on all continents. Other significant projects include the Hans-Sachs-Haus in Gelsenkirchen, the Berlin-Spandau train station, and Berlin Brandenburg Airport and, most recently, the renovation of the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid. In the team, he embraced flat hierarchies — focusing on interpersonal relationships and maintaining a good balance of leadership and trust. Nikolaus Goetze has been Partner at gmp’s Hamburg office since 1996. Together with Meinhard von Gerkan, he played a key role in establishing and leading gmp's activities in Asia. With enormous energy, optimism, and a strong intuition, he has opened the way for us to new countries and many new tasks. His most significant projects include the Hanoi Museum, the Vietnamese National Assembly, and the trade exhibition centers in Nanning and Shenzhen, China. In Germany too, he has contributed numerous city-defining buildings, including the Kunsthalle Mannheim. With his ability to connect and inspire people, he has also mentored and supported new generations of architects at the aac Academy for Architectural Culture. With great appreciation, we look at their track record of groundbreaking projects – Hubert Nienhoff and Nikolaus Goetze have made outstanding contributions to architectural culture far beyond Germany's borders. Since its founding in 1965 by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg, gmp has been headed up by a group of partners. This joint leadership model prepares the ground for a smooth succession: in future, the management team will consist of founding partner Volkwin Marg, along with executive partners Stephan Schütz (Berlin), Wei Wu (Shanghai), and Magdalene Weiss (Hamburg). Last night, Hubert Nienhoff and Nikolaus Goetze were honored and bid farewell during our year-end celebrations in Berlin and Hamburg, recognizing their outstanding contributions. With some heart-felt words and many memories, these were moving moments for everyone. Thank you, Hubert, thank you, Niko!
