𝗦𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀. At our company, we’ve come to expect that the path to sustainability is rarely a straight line. As sustainability managers and Chief Sustainability Officers, you know firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate evolving regulations, shifting standards, and internal complexities. It often feels like every day brings a new hurdle, a new obstacle to overcome. But here’s something we’ve learned along the way: adversity is a natural part of this journey, every challenge becomes a chance for growth. 𝗪𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸—𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 (𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆) 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 🦜 Birds are nature's champions of growth, playing a key role in seed dispersal. Whether through feeding, dropping seeds, carrying them on their bodies, or pass them through their digestive systems, fertilizing them as they go, birds help restore ecosystems by spreading seeds far and wide—giving plants the chance to grow in new places. 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀: In a fascinating study, wild bird droppings were used to accelerate the recovery of damaged seagrass meadows in South Florida. Sticks are placed at areas where seagrass is being restored so that resting birds will "fertilize" their growth, which restored critical ecological services faster than traditional methods. This is a perfect example of how birds can help restore ecosystems. Source: W. Why Your Nature-Based Portfolio Should Include at Least One Mangrove Project: 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀 🌿 Mangroves are some of the most undervalued ecosystems, yet they play a critical role in biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and coastal protection. These coastal forests store up to 1,000 tonnes of carbon per hectare, sequestering five times more carbon than terrestrial forests! 🌍 More than 1,500 species, from fish and birds to tigers and sloths, depend on mangroves for survival. They provide vital nurseries for commercial fish, shelter for wildlife, and nesting grounds for migratory birds. Mangroves even protect a $7.6 billion seafood industry and help support 109,000 jobs in Florida alone. 🐟 Not only do mangroves stabilize coastlines by reducing erosion from storms, waves, and tides, they also filter pollutants, protect coral reefs, and absorb storm surges, reducing the risk of coastal flooding. Mangroves are biodiversity hotspots and natural shields that protect both nature and humanity. Let’s protect and restore these incredible ecosystems for a sustainable future with good carbon projects! Indigenous People: Guardians of Global Biodiversity 🌍 Did you know 𝟴𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀? These communities protect some of the planet’s most crucial ecosystems, often in Biodiversity Hotspots—areas rich in life but under threat. 36% of the world’s remaining intact forests are on Indigenous lands, which are better maintained and hold higher biodiversity than non-Indigenous areas. With just 5% of the global population, Indigenous peoples play an outsized role in protecting nature, with nearly half of the world’s endangered mammals living on their lands. 🦜🐾 Forests on Indigenous land also experience deforestation rates up to 25% lower than the global average, helping preserve biodiversity and combat climate change. 🌳 𝗔𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀. At goodcarbon, we’re playing the long game, and biodiversity is our secret weapon. Why? 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲. From forests to wetlands to grasslands, ecosystems packed with biodiversity aren’t just beautiful—they’re resilient and powerhouse carbon sinks. 🌍 Here’s the science: 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟳𝟬% 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀, making them a stronger ally in the fight against climate change. And it’s not just the plants doing the heavy lifting—𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺’𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟱𝟬%! 🐾 Their everyday activities—like burrowing and foraging—help keep the balance. Meanwhile, monoculture forests and some poorly implemented carbon projects might seem like quick fixes, but they can hurt biodiversity and limit long-term carbon sequestration. In contrast, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) that prioritize biodiversity aren’t just better for the planet, they’re also better at standing up to climate stressors and keeping carbon locked away for good. 🌳 If we’re serious about long-term climate resilience, biodiversity is non-negotiable. 🌱 Want to stay ahead of the curve on sustainability and biodiversity? The Urgent Need for Mangrove Restoration in India: A Call to Action 🌿 You might have seen it on our project team’s LinkedIn timeline: our teams have visited mangrove restoration grounds in India. A crucial solution for environmental resilience and supporting local livelihoods. The urgency to act is undeniable, and here’s why: 1. Mangroves Are Disappearing Rapidly For example, the Sundarbans region in India and Bangladesh has lost 24.55% of its mangroves (136.77 sq. km) due to permanent erosion over the past three decades. This alarming loss leaves these vital ecosystems increasingly vulnerable. 2. Mangroves: Nature’s First Line of Defense Mangroves provide essential protection against extreme weather events like cyclones and floods. Their life-saving impact has been proven, such as after Odisha’s 1999 supercyclone, when they significantly reduced human casualties. 3. Mangroves Are Critical for Biodiversity and Fisheries Mangroves serve as breeding grounds and nurseries for marine life, which supports healthy fish populations and sustains local fisheries. In India, mangroves contribute to 23% of commercial marine fisheries output, and every hectare of mangroves increases fish production by 1.86 tonnes per year. All in All: Restoring mangroves not only protects against climate impacts but also enhances biodiversity, stabilizes coastlines, and supports local economies through fisheries and ecotourism. Their ability to absorb carbon, reduce flooding, and protect endangered species makes them a keystone for a sustainable and resilient future. Investing in mangrove restoration now will yield long-term environmental and economic benefits. Stay tuned for more updates on our efforts! 🌱 Source: “Erosion, an important cause of mangrove loss in the Sundarbans,” Mongabay; Economic analysis of mangrove and marine fishery linkages in India, April 2017. #MangroveRestoration #Sustainability #ClimateAction #goodcarbon #Biodiversity

Why Biodiversity Should Be Our Top Priority 🌿 While climate change dominates the headlines, the urgency around biodiversity loss still flies under the radar. But here's the truth: biodiversity is essential for human life and the global economy. In 2011, the economic value of biodiversity was estimated between $170 and $190 trillion—double the global GDP at the time. Today, around 60% of economic output worldwide relies directly or indirectly on nature. Despite this, we invest less than 0.2% of global GDP in protecting it. The consequences are staggering: according to the World Bank, biodiversity loss could cost the global economy $2.7 trillion annually by 2030. It's time to see protecting our ecosystems not just as an environmental issue, but as a critical economic necessity.
