From idea to impact: Seven scientists from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) at HZDR attended the Start-up Days 2024 in Munich last week.   The two-day event, organized by the #transfer offices of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft, the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft and the Max Planck Society was aimed at #scientists interested in founding their own #company.   Borhane Ben Said, Dr. Rohan J., Aratrika Ghosh, Jan Tiemann, Enkhnomin Enkhjargal, Dr. Jonathan Engelhardt and Peter Boelens found inspiration and motivation to develop their #research #ideas into a potential #spinoff venture.   In total, four promising innovative approaches from research at HIF and HZDR are on their way into #application now:   💡 Novel biotechnological process to extract gallium from industrial #wastewater 💡 Optimization of #flotation processes for #mining companies 💡 Extended Reality #Microscopy 💡 Magnetic processing for the extraction of #rareearths from phosphor powders   We are keeping our fingers crossed for all spin-off projects to become reality. Für besondere Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der kerntechnischen Forschung hat Maud Zilbermann vom #HZDR den Women in Nuclear Germany Award 2024 gewonnen. Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Den Preis erhielt sie für ihre herausragende Masterarbeit, in der sie aktivierte Zement- und Betonproben vergleichend strukturell und (radio-)chemisch untersucht hat. Maud Zilbermann ist Doktorandin am Institut für #Ressourcenökologie des Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). Wichtiger Schritt für die Entwicklung neuer Radiopharmaka: Mit einem hochauflösenden PET/MRT-Scanner wollen HZDR-Forscher*innen die Bildgebung von Gehirntumoren auf molekularer Ebene verbessern. Das Institut für Radiopharmazeutische Krebsforschung am Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) entwickelt #Radiotracer als radioaktive Arzneimittel für die klinische Anwendung. Der Freistaat Sachsen fördert nun über Mittel aus dem Europäischen Fonds für regionale Entwicklung sowie mit Steuermitteln des Landes Sachsen den Kauf eines für Kleintierstudien geeigneten simultanen PET/MRT-Scanners. Als Teil des Projekts GliaRPET wollen #HZDR-Forscher*innen mit dem Gerät am Leipziger Standort die präzise Bildgebung von Gehirntumoren auf molekularer Ebene mittels Positronen-Emissions-Tomographie (PET) und Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) verbessern. How can medical technology improve our #health and what are its limitations? Answers to these questions will be provided in a public panel discussion on October 29 at COSMO Science Forum #Dresden. The event featuring Prof. Larysa Baraban from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) will start at 6pm at the COSMO. In addition, Katharina Langton and Lilli Meseck will also be taking part in the discussion. Langton is leading the Midwifery Bachelor of Science program at TU Dresden as Academic Director. Meseck is a midwifery student in her fourth year. Our Career Center was on the road in Berlin! Last week, a Career Change Maker Networking Event took place at the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Head Office. More #recycling efficiency for #plastics - HIF researchers characterize successfully #polymers in electronic waste with specific #sensor combinations Plastics make up around a quarter of the materials contained in electronic #waste (e-waste). The proportion that is recycled is comparatively low - the majority is simply incinerated. The first step to improve recycling is the identification of polymer materials, so that they can be selectively sorted and processed in a way that preserves their function. We have now succeeded in determining the specific characterization of the main e-waste plastic types by combining multiple sensors. Applied on an industrial scale, more plastics can be optimally processed and returned to the production chain.
