The LYCRA Company is taking the lead in transforming the apparel industry towards sustainability with a uniquely innovative breakthrough: the very first commercial production of bio-derived LYCRA® fiber, made from renewable industrial corn. This new fiber is part of their collaboration with Qore®, which employs QIRA®, a next-generation material that significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared with traditionally used petroleum-based elastane fibers. By integrating QIRA® into the production of LYCRA® fiber, carbon emissions are reduced by as much as 44% without affecting the performance, stretch, and durability for which LYCRA® is known. That shift to bio-derived fiber is the beginning of how The LYCRA Company plans to achieve its sustainability goals; for example, converting at least one-third of its global production to bio-derived fibers by 2025. The LYCRA Company is looking to scale this technology further toward the goal of producing a 100% bio-based fiber down the road. In light of wildlife issues and the demand for sustainable biological solutions, this notion is an important step toward lessening the environmental impact of the apparel industry.
