30% of the carbon dioxide that we emit from fossil fuel burning is absorbed by intact nature on land. "It's thanks to the biodiversity and the intact forests systems, in particular, that are buffering this. If you don't have a healthy planet, that capacity of buffering that stress is reduced," says PIK director Johan Rockström on the podcast "The Great Simplification with Nate Hagens". 🎬 Watch the full video: https://lnkd.in/d6829zzY 🎧 Or listen to the podcast: https://lnkd.in/dNPcxTmh

That was the question posed to policymakers, academics, civil society and industry representatives at a closed-door meeting organised by Carbon Gap and the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research on 3 July 2024. The meeting saw discussions on 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 as quickly as possible whilst continuing to prioritise emission reduction. Most participants converged around the 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to help scale carbon removal sufficiently to reach climate neutrality by 2050. Discussions touched on several possible policies the EU could consider to ensure that carbon removal contributes to climate mitigation efforts during the next mandate: 🎯 A 𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 for carbon removal for 2040; 📊 The possible 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 (𝗘𝗧𝗦) 𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 (RTS), with a clear view on the objective of such integration; ⭐ An EU facility to 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 of high-quality carbon removal credits; 💰 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 for the deployment of carbon removal in Europe, for instance through public procurement. This closed-door session helped kickstart discussions on the role of CDR, and Carbon Gap is keen to continue these discussions with key stakeholders in the next mandate. 🎧 How greener buildings can contribute to Europe’s #decarbonisation efforts, with PIK scientist Michael Pahle - listen in.👇
📗 Making buildings greener: EU decarbonisation plans By 2030, the European Union must reduce emissions from the heating and cooling of buildings – responsible for 13 percent of EU emissions – by the equivalent of the annual emissions of Slovakia. In this episode of The Sound of Economics, Rebecca Christie sits down with Michael Pahle, Marion Santini and Giovanni Sgaravatti to discuss how greener buildings can play contribute to Europe’s decarbonisation efforts. They discuss new EU rules, expanding the emissions trading scheme, and the need to find financing for energy-friendly renovations, as well as how to shield households and small companies from the impact of higher carbon prices. The earth is sending bigger and bigger bills, like droughts, floods, and heat waves, states PIK Director Johan Rockström in recent TED talk during the Bloomberg Green Festival. This would be causing serious economic costs: "The latest scientific update shows an 19% loss of GDP by 2050 if we follow the current path. This is equivalent to 38 trillion US dollar of loss per year in 2050. It’s starting to hurt, both in human social costs and in economic cost." Yet, according to Rockström, there would be ample evidence that citizens across the world care about nature & climate. "They are concerned, they want solutions. (...) We have also so much evidence that the solutions are not only available, but if we implement them, we get a more healthy, stable, secure future with jobs and economies that can compete and provide livelihoods into the future." Tune in from 22:30 and listen to his powerful talk. https://lnkd.in/dVFpgV8w
