Fair enough! ⚖️🌱 The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has told France that banning “meaty” names for plant-based foods would confuse consumers and the market alike. The ECJ judge ruled that, while a ban on “meaty” names could be technically possible under certain, cumbersome conditions, the current EU legislation is already sufficiently capable of protecting consumers — and a ban would upset EU harmonisation. “We welcome the clarity given by the European Court of Justice in this judgement,” said Jasmijn de Boo, Global CEO of ProVeg International. “We now hope that the French court will take to heart what has been said about the disruption that a ban on “meaty” names for plant-based food will cause and dismiss the restriction accordingly,” de Boo said. The case against the French Decree was brought by the European Vegetarian Union, the AVF Ⓥ (Association Végétarienne de France), Protéines France, and Beyond Meat. The University of Graz is opening a 100% plant-based canteen! 🇦🇹🌱 Following campaigning by the Plant-Based Universities (@plantbasedunis) movement and overwhelming support from the Students’ Union, the @universityofgraz is opening a fully plant-based student cafeteria on its campus — while closing its old cafeteria. The move is part of a broader shift towards more sustainable, plant-rich catering at universities – that want to serve as a role model for reducing emissions and our impact on the environment amidst the climate crisis. COP16 has three main goals: 1. the conservation of biological diversity (or biodiversity); 2. the sustainable use of its components; 3. and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources. ProVeg received official observer status to COP16 earlier this year. New York Climate Week just ended yesterday. While our team is on their way home, here are some of their key successes from last week! ✨ We successfully applied to have an event on the Food Day by Tilt Collective. Our Global CEO Jasmijn de Boo represented ProVeg to discuss our work in changing school menus as well as how we helped change the catering at the UN Climate Conferences. Our colleague Lana Weidgenant also spoke on the Food Day by Tilt Collective in a session hosted by Francesco Branca, the World Health Organization's Director of Nutrition. Lana also spoke at a session hosted by the UN High-Level Climate Champions. We co-hosted a big tent food systems gathering and reception together with UN Foundation, the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, and Mercy For Animals which had speakers from COP29 and the FAO, where topics such as COP30 in Brazil were covered. Of course, we made sure to serve delicious fully plant-based food at the reception! 🌱 And that's not all! Our team signed onto a letter for food systems to be included more in the national climate commitment of Brazil and we were able to deliver this letter to the First Lady of Brazil, Rosângela Lula da Silva, and the Ministry for Environment and Climate Change (see pictures of us handing over the letter). ✉️ Part of our youth board was also in New York. We recommended them to Food Tank for their ‘Next Generation of Changemakers’ panel discussion, where 3/4 of their panel was ultimately our youth board representatives.
