Marktplätze: Wir = Senken :-) , Atem, SQUAKE, Freeze Carbon, GreenAir, Carbonfuture, CEEZER, goodcarbon, First Climate, OneClimate. Standards: Wald-Klimastandard, ISO. Verbände & Organisationen: WWF Germany, Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE), B.A.U.M., Foundation Development and Climate Alliance, German Biochar eV. Monitoring- und Verifizierungsdienstleister: TÜV, Seqana, Cula Technologies. Beratungen: Deloitte, BCG, ClimatePartner, Accenture, EY, Bain, KPMG, McKinsey, PWC, South Pole, UNO, INO, Dekra, TÜV Rheinland. Do you want to be a climate-pioneering company? Well, then, you better join the companies buying high-quality carbon credits! Stick with me through this short blog post and use the carousel to fully understand the risks of buying low-quality carbon credits. To set the scene, a study by Ecosystem Marketplace, which analysed transactions reported by over 7,000 companies, showed that those engaged in the carbon market are nearly twice as likely to decarbonise their operations year over year. This definitely defeats the narrative that companies buying carbon credits are buying their way to sustainable statuses. However, for your company to become a climate pioneer, it is essential that you understand carbon credit quality and become effective in communicating the risks of buying lower-quality carbon credits. This is crucial to ensure that the carbon credits you procure effectively offset those hard-to-reduce emissions. The risks of buying low-quality carbon credits clearly point towards the importance of not settling for low-quality and, in some cases, cheaper carbon credits. To begin with, low-quality offsets might not truly benefit the environment and can damage the credibility of a company’s climate and sustainability strategy. Additionally, the costs of procuring carbon credits can accumulate, especially if credits are ineffective in decarbonisation on a global and company level. Navigating the market can be challenging when carbon credits, each claiming to offset or eliminate one metric ton of GHGs, vary in price from as low as $5 per ton to $1,500 per ton. Projects that have sound, science-based practices, use digital Measuring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV), and have a transparent track record of emissions reductions will most certainly price higher for being able to do so. This does not mean all projects selling expensive credits are high quality. To ensure that premium credits deliver a high-quality impact on GHG levels, one needs to add a science-based and robust due diligence layer before purchasing. Partnering with the right players in the carbon markets will not only help save countless resources to identify high-quality credits and put your company one big step closer to becoming a climate pioneer. Thoughts, comments and experiences are welcome in the comments! ⏬

Our very own Adrian Wons sat with Phillip Blumenthal from Code Gaia to discuss pain points and solutions in the carbon markets. Phillip is rather sceptic of the market, but in the end, we agreed that climate financing is important. However, there were a lot of shenanigans in the market, which is why we need heavy due diligence processes.

What happens when a carbon-offsetting sceptic meets his match? That is exactly what happened when Phillip Blumenthal from Code Gaia and I met. We initially had a "healthy" debate on Linkedin. In the spirit of knowing that “we are all in this together” in the sustainability space, serendipity brought us together again at an event in Berlin. We decided to bring this healthy debate online for everyone to watch. We had really progressive conversations, and I would say that Phillip has gone from nonbeliever to keen observer, with a clearer understanding of the pitfalls needing attention and the positive impact the carbon markets can have on corporate sustainability. I invite you to watch the podcast to learn about: 1. My journey from the corporate world into climate tech 2. The need for carbon credits to finance the nature gap 3. The evolution of claims and corporate incentives to take part in the #VCM 4. The importance of soil carbon and methods such as #Biochar AND MUCH MORE! Thanks Phillip!! #SIC2024 #SustainableInsurance #Nachhaltigkeit

Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation (ARR) is one of the most effective VCM methodologies as it ensures carbon sequestration and ecosystem restoration at the same time. Despite being grouped under one single methodology, the ARR carbon removal practices have some differences. Let’s dive into how it works ⬇️ If you want to learn more about ARR, sign up for our webinar “A Buyers Guide to Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation” on the 9th of July (Link in comments). This is what WWF wants you to do instead of Carbon Offsetting. 👇 The leading principle for companies taking responsibility for their CO2 footprint has been the so-called "ton-for-ton" method. You buy 1,000 carbon credits for your 1,000 tCO2 footprint. Afterwards, you could say, "I compensated for my carbon footprint". This, done wrong, could lead to optimising for the cheapest credit. That's why WWF Germany and others like Gold Standard are suggesting a different approach: "money-for-ton". Here, you set up a budget pricing in your Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. This budget can be invested into carbon projects along guidelines like Oxford Net Zero. WWF recommends starting with at least 100€/t for your Scope 1 and 2 emissions, which should increase to 219€/t by 2030. From then on, you should include your Scope 3 emissions as well. In their papers, WWF goes into more detail and shows different industry scenarios. I think it's an excellent paper and guideline! I will post the links in the comments.
