#LetsTalkPERIOD 2.0 - Watch the IMPURE Trailer and join the Exclusive Film Screening in #Berlin on 14.11.24 Following its impactful World Premiere in Nairobi in September, this exclusive screening will take place on Thursday, November 14th, 2024 14:00-16:30 in Berlin (Arsenal Cinema, Potsdamer Platz), in cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) – and as partner of the SuSanA. We want to invite you all – key stakeholders and professionals who focus on menstrual health and hygiene (#MHH), women's rights, #genderequality and #WASH – topics at the core of IMPURE's narrative. IMPURE is a feature film that addresses the ongoing global stigma surrounding menstruation, which continues to deny many girls access to education and full participation in their communities. It is the first fictional film to date that gives us a truly unique perspective by putting the audience in the shoes of an affected girl to follow her through her struggle. More than just a cinematic experience, IMPURE is designed to educate, inform, and inspire, turning its release into a catalyst for change. Apart from distribution, a social impact campaign is in the making intending to use the film as an educational tool to tackle the taboo in as many countries and communities as possible - building on experiences of successful approaches such as: #LetsTalkPERIOD, the #MHDay movement by WASH United and #waterisahumanright / #Dance4WASH by Viva con Agua Film Synopsis: Upon experiencing her first menstruation at school, June, a twelve-year-old Kenyan girl, grapples with the harsh reality of unawareness, exclusion, and shame. Together with Nepalese actress & influencer Keki Adhikari, we are breaking the taboo so that women can live healthier lives. So #LetsTalkMenopause! We have been working successfully with Keki for some time now to ensure that girls and women no longer suffer from disadvantageous norms. Another example: In many parts of the world, girls and women are still marginalised during #menstruation, leading to social exclusion, which influences education and their health. We propose using sustainable cost recovery principles as a framework to guide constructive conversations. What an excellent study on cross-subsidies for pit emptying! Congratulations Jonathan Wilcox and colleagues. This shows eloquently: 1- What we all know but don't say enough: subsidies are needed for FSM services for low-income households. Emptying is rarely viable on its own (and look at the big "indirect costs" at the top... and look at CapEx...) 2- How cross-subsidies can operate in practice, as it's not easy for a sanitation business to have a good grasp on how to make it work and how to present it. 3- How this could (should!) be done by utilities / public services. The current call for better regulation should take note! 4- The *actual* costs of emptying - such useful data. And so delinked from affordability sometimes... This chimes well with the experience in the Container Based Sanitation Alliance where several providers use cross-subsidies to keep the price point of CBS affordable enough. For instance Loowatt Madagascar's experience is enriching, as the mobile toilets they rent for events and building sites (and which provide also essential services!) cross-subsidise the household sanitation service to keep it affordable. Congratulations Pit Vidura for sharing your P&L so openly and benefitting the whole sector as a result.
