The IP Office of the EU. Protecting trade marks and designs.

Sobre nosotros

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) is the European Union Agency responsible for the registration of the European Union trade mark (EUTM) and the registered Community design (RCD), two unitary intellectual property rights valid across the EU-27. EUIPO also hosts the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights, which has responsibility for a wide range of tasks related to research, communication, spreading best practice and enforcement of all types of intellectual property rights. EUIPO also maintains and manages a single publicly accessible online database of orphan works. Together with its national and regional EU IP office partners, EUIPO has worked to provide a set of common IT tools and databases ranging from search and classification tools, modern electronic services for users, examination and processing software and enforcement tools. Through the EUIPO Academy, the Office offers webinars, learning materials and specific courses covering all aspects of trade mark and design registration. EUIPO has been based in Alicante, Spain, since its foundation in 1994. This is the official Linked In page of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). It is administered and moderated by the EUIPO’s Communication team. On this page we post and share general facts about the Office and its activities, as well as on trade marks, designs and other types of intellectual property rights. We also raise awareness about the importance of protecting IP against counterfeiting and piracy. Please note that we may not always guarantee the accuracy and completeness of this information, as it may come from various sources. Comments and images on the EUIPO’s timeline do not necessarily reflect our official position or opinions. Furthermore, this page is not intended to be used as any kind of advice in the process of trade mark and design registration.

Geographical Indications (GIs) are more than just intellectual property rights— they stand at the intersection of tradition and innovation, preserving cultural heritage while fostering economic and creative progress. Contributing €75 billion annually to the European economy and accounting for over 15% of EU food and drink exports, their significance cannot be overstated.   This week, in cooperation with the European Commission, we had the honour of hosting the Geographical Indications Conference 2025: “Safeguarding Our Heritage, Cultivating Our Future”. With over 2000 participants joining in person and online, this was the largest event we have ever hosted in Alicante—a clear reflection of the growing significance and impact of GIs.   I was truly impressed by the quality of discussions and the depth of expertise gathered over these two days. I was especially struck by the contributions of GI producers and manufacturers—both in agricultural GIs and craft and industrial GIs—whose participation in the exhibitions alongside the conference was an integral part of its success. This brought the discussions to life, showcasing the real-world impact of GIs.   Collaboration and dialogue are essential, and it is through the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and best practices that we can build a stronger, more harmonised GI framework that benefits both producers and consumers across the EU. As Marion Walsmann, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs in the European Parliament and former rapporteur on CIGIs, aptly said in her keynote speech: “Nobody knows everything, but everybody knows something.” Events like these ones are excellent occasions to share ideas and perspectives and chart a path forward in this important area.   As we prepare to open applications on 1 December as part of our new competence in Craft and Industrial GIs, we remain fully committed to continued dialogue and cooperation with all relevant stakeholders to shape the future of GIs together.   A heartfelt thank you to: ▪️ Christophe Hansen, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, European Commission ▪️ Marion Walsmann, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs, European Parliament, and former rapporteur on CIGIs ▪️ Monika Krzepkowska, Ambassador of Poland in Spain and representative of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU ▪️ Martine Pinville, Alternate in the Committee of Regions and former rapporteur on CIGIs ▪️ Kerstin Jorna, Director-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, European Commission   I am also deeply grateful to all the panel leaders, speakers, and participants, as well as the many GI producers and manufacturers who shared their expertise and insights. A special thanks to everyone behind the scenes whose hard work and dedication made this conference possible. Your dedication and collaboration are what drive the GI system forward. #GeographicalIndications #GIs #IP #Sustainability #LocalHeritage #Innovation #EUTrade

Fake medicines aren’t just a danger to your health…They’re a lifeline for organised crime, fuelling networks that profit from human suffering. Every counterfeit pill, vial, or injection strengthens these criminal enterprises while exploiting the vulnerable. 💊 Someone looking for quick weight loss buys fake diet pills online, unaware they’re laced with dangerous chemicals that could cause heart failure. 💉 A patient struggling to afford life-saving cancer treatment turns to unregulated online pharmacies, only to receive a fake drug that does nothing to stop the spread of their disease. 👶 A parent buys what they think is cough syrup for their baby, only to discover it contains toxic ingredients that could cause severe harm. These aren’t just individual tragedies. They’re part of a much bigger problem. Behind every fake medicine lies a criminal network exploiting desperation, undermining trust in healthcare, and putting all of us at risk. This is why the EUIPO, alongside Europol’s Operation SHIELD and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), is fighting back. Fake medicines are made by real criminals. Stay alert, stay safe, and help us expose these networks 🛡️. Together, we can protect lives and dismantle organised crime. • 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬? On this day in 1980, the Rubik’s Cube made its international debut. The Rubik’s cube was invented by a Hungarian professor. Ernő Rubik wanted to create a teaching tool. He ended up creating one of the most famous toys in the world. Find here 5 curiosities about it (and about IP) 🧙♂️ The cube was originally known as the ‘Magic Cube’. It was an almost instant success worldwide and it became part of the 80s popular culture. 💡 Rubik applied for a patent on the puzzle for the first time in 1975. Following the expiration of Rubik's patent in 2000, many brands of cubes appeared, especially from Chinese companies. 💵 It was reported that 'Spin Master' paid around 50 million euro to buy the Rubik's Cube brand. ⚖️ 'Spin Master' owns 17 EU trade marks and 3 Community Designs related to the cube. Among them: its name and shape and many variations of the cube itself. It was registered as an 3D EU trade mark in 1998 for the first time and there has been many discussions ad Court rulings concerning the cube, its shape and if it is (or not) sufficient to grant it trade mark protection - check the case on Esearch Case Law 📜 The Rubik’s Cube is intimately linked to mathematics, group theory, spatial transformation, geometry and pattern recognition. “A symbol of the path from chaos to order”, according to Erno Rubik himself. PS: Happy birthday, Mr Rubik! (born 13 July 1944) #rubikscube #ernorubik #intellectualproperty #trademarks #onthisday #rubikday

When the EUIPO was established, Lego's bricks were among the first 3D trade marks registered. Here are 7 interesting facts about Lego and IP: 🧱 Lego bricks and Minifigures were some of the first 3D trade marks registered at the EU level in 1996. 🇩🇰 Lego originated in a Danish carpentry workshop. Creator Ole Kirk Christiansen made miniature versions to show clients before completing full constructions. 🔡 The name Lego comes from the Danish phrase "leg godt", meaning "play well" (and also interpreted as "I put together" in Latin). 🎨 Over 50 designs were rejected before settling on the Minifigure design—originally all male. Two months later, the first female Minifigure was introduced. 🧙♂️ Lego has licensing agreements with major franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Spider-Man, ensuring their products closely resemble original characters. 🎬 Lego’s IP strategy extends to movies, video games, theme parks, and a wide licensing portfolio—including clothing, bedding, books, and more. ™️ Today, Lego owns over 120 EU Trade Marks. #Lego #Minifigures #LegoBricks #IntellectualProperty #IPStrategy #Legoday
