e-Learning for Strengthening Higher Education in Ethiopia (e-SHE)

Following the e-SHE University Engagement Workshop, universities are making significant progress in institutionalizing e-learning and demonstrating their commitment to adopting and owning the e-SHE initiatives. As part of this ongoing process, Aksum University Academic Program Directorate convened a discussion on the e-learning plan for the 2024-2025 academic year, engaging college deans, faculty deans, and institute directors. Discussions focused on procedures to ensure effective implementation of e-SHE initiative across all academic units, strategies to improve the e-learning experience and the integration of digital tools. From August 13 to 17, 2024, Bahir Dar University successfully organized a Student Account Activation campaign, enabling the activation of nearly 2,000 institutional email accounts on the e-SHE Learning Management System (LMS). This campaign was designed to provide students with access to the Student Success Suite and model courses available on the e-SHE LMS, laying a solid foundation for their digital learning journey. The joint efforts of the e-learning coordinators, lab technicians, and students were instrumental in the success of this campaign. The campaign reflects Bahir Dar University’s commitment to adopting the e-SHE initiative and implementing the e-SHE 2024/2025 academic year plan. The adoption of this initiative by Bahir Dar University, as well as other universities across Ethiopia, is an encouraging step towards realizing the national plan for cascading e-SHE university-led implementation. Since the university engagement workshop at Addis Ababa University, universities have been acting proactively to implement the e-SHE (2024/25) 2017 E.C. plan, embracing the concept of university-led implementation. This marks significant progress towards the institutionalization of e-learning across universities and contributes to the sustainability of the program. Jigjiga University hosted a Dean's Forum to engage the university's top management in outlining clear directions for achieving the targets of the e-SHE (2024/25) 2017 E.C. Plan. Emphasizing the importance of collaboration, the management urged all stakeholders to contribute their maximum potential to ensure the plan's success. We extend our appreciation to Jigjiga University for the effort being made towards the institutionalization of e-learning within the university. High-level delegates from the Mastercard Foundation visited Hawassa University to gain insight into the impacts of the e-SHE program. The delegation observed the progress and outcomes of the program, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Education — Ethiopia in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, Arizona State University, and Shayashone (SYS) PLC. During their visit, they also witnessed the University's dedicated efforts to institutionalize e-learning, including a tour of the newly established multimedia studio. Hawassa University recently held a significant meeting, bringing together university instructors and their leadership team to discuss mainstreaming e-learning and digitalization into their activities. The meeting aimed to integrate the e-learning targets for strengthening higher education into the 2017 E.C. (2024/25) university plan. Discussions focused on engaging e-SHE masterclass-certified instructors, utilizing their expertise as influencers and change agents within their circles, and developing strategies for initiating e-course development and fully integrating the program within the university. This proactive action by Hawassa University marks a milestone in universities taking ownership of the program and ensuring its sustainability by fully mainstreaming the e-SHE initiative within their institutions. The e-SHE annual university engagement workshop, co-organized with Addis Ababa University, concluded successfully. Day two of the workshop was productive, featuring active participation from the universities in discussions and future planning. Discussions and presentations focused on the planning, with a selected universities sharing their plans from day one breakout sessions, where all universities planned their e-SHE 2017 E.C. targets that will be implemented at their respective institutions. We extend our gratitude to all participants from each university and to Addis Ababa University for their vital role in making this workshop a success. e-SHE in collaboration with Addis Ababa University hosted a two-day annual university engagement workshop. As part of the ongoing effort to embed e-SHE activities in universities’ mainstream activities, the workshop aimed at engaging universities to ensure the e-SHE annual targets are met through university-led implementation. It also serves as an active platform for inter-university learning and enhanced partnerships. The workshop brought together academic program directors, ICT directors, and e-learning coordinators from all 50 public universities. Day one focused on reviewing the progress of 2016 E.C. and discussing the harmonization of the 2017 E.C. planning. The latter involved breakout activities where universities came together to co-plan the next year's target activities. The day concluded with participants presenting and discussing their takeaways from the breakout sessions. The workshop is being held at Addis Ababa University's 6 Kilo Campus. The e-SHE team is thrilled to announce the completion of the Multimedia Studio Utilization and Sharing Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for higher educational institutions in Ethiopia. This SOP will help operationalize the recently built five multimedia studios and the next two. Developed collaboratively by various stakeholders, this SOP sets forth a framework for effective operating procedures for the utilization and sharing of multimedia studios. It standardizes operations to ensure optimal efficiency, resource allocation, intellectual property protection, and a safe working environment across higher educational institutions in our nation. The e-SHE Program has successfully completed the civil work for multimedia studios at Mekelle University and Samara University. These studios are extensions to the initial goal of building five multimedia studios at five resource center universities. The next phase, interior construction and electronic studio equipment commissioning, will commence soon.
