Forest bioeconomy in action
About us
The Bioregions Facility, coordinated by the European Forest Institute (EFI), is a knowledge-led platform dedicated to accelerating the development of a sustainable European bioeconomy. The Bioregions Facility connects forward-thinking regions across Europe to work together to unlock regional potential through international exchange on the forest circular bioeconomy. Our Bioregions members are Basque Country, Catalonia and North Rhine-Westphalia. Observers are Austria, Castile and León, the Committee of the Regions - NAT Commission (COR), the Free State of Thuringia and North Karelia. It is governed by a Multi-donor Trust Fund, which provides joint funding for the Facility’s activities. Member regions are represented equally in the steering committee, where they supervise, agree on, and evaluate the implementation of the work programme while ensuring alignment with regional priorities.

🚨 Paper alert 🚨 📝 How do the public and private sector perceive the bioeconomy? Insights from nine different regions in Europe can help shape the bioeconomy. 🌳 Key findings are: (1) We observe positive attitudes towards the bioeconomy. (2) Environmental benefits are perceived to be the most distinguishing factor in comparison with the conventional economy. (3) Despite an emerging consensus on key elements and dynamics of the bioeconomy, sector-specific focus areas and regional specificity of conditions prevent uniformity of the bioeconomy across regions. 📣 A big shout out to all co-authors who were a part of this journey!
