Together we are helping the planet. One Marine Protected Area at a time.

À propos

We work with governments and partners to build and manage Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Philippines, Indonesia, Zanzibar, and Belize that regenerate coral reef ecosystems and improve the lives of local communities. We are regenerating 1,280,000 ha of high-biodiversity coral reefs, protecting over 70 threatened species and improving the livelihoods of more than 20,000 people in coastal communities. Our four fundamental and interrelated fields of operation: - Science and Conservation - Community Development - Compliance - Sustainable Revenues Every Blue Alliance MPA is designed and managed to rewild ecosystems, improve food security, promote sustainable Blue Economy development for local communities, and enhance climate change resilience. Our experience has shown us that these goals are entirely compatible and achievable to create a successful MPA. We bridge the marine conservation financing gap through innovative, Blue Economy reef-positive businesses in and around the MPAs, collaborating with key partners and working with local communities. Our priority sectors include ecotourism, blue carbon projects, community-based aquaculture, and plastic recycling. We believe that our MPAs can become financially self-sustainable and independent from donors in the long term. Together we are helping the planet, one Marine Protected Area at a time.

  • Crown of Thorns Starfish (CoTS) are natural predators of hard corals. However, during outbreaks, their overpopulation can significantly harm coral reefs. By closely monitoring their numbers and locations, we can take timely action to reduce outbreaks and protect our valuable reefs. 🌊 In Pemba, our local team works closely with the Shehia Fisheries Committee (SFC), providing training on CoTS policies. Alongside local spear fishers, the team regularly monitors CoTS populations and conducts collections when necessary. The team also performs monthly CPUE (Catch Per Unit Effort) assessments across the entire Blue Corridor. Together, we're taking timely action to protect our precious coral reefs. ▶️ Learn more about our science and conservation activities in Pemba: https://bit.ly/48W16Uy #BlueAlliance #CoastalCommunities #CoralReefProtection #CrownOfThornsStarfish #MarineConservation

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are crucial for preserving marine ecosystems and supporting coastal communities. These protected areas serve as sanctuaries, allowing marine life to thrive and sustaining local livelihoods. While MPAs are an important conservation tool, they restrict fishing in core zones, impacting coastal communities that depend on these areas for their livelihoods. To address this, Blue Alliance is launching community-driven projects that offer sustainable alternative livelihoods and boost resilience. 📍 Dulangan: The local association is utilizing the nearby talipapa (wet market) to sell their harvest, ensuring income for fishers and providing fresh produce to neighboring towns like San Teodoro and Calapan City. 📍 Tabinay: A rice reselling project is up and running! Open seven days a week, this store ensures food security and offers a consistent income for the community. 📍 Villaflor: The Samahang Mangingisda ng Barangay Villaflor (SMBV) has launched the "Rice Trading at Iba Pa Store" to diversify local income and offer essential goods to the neighborhood. These projects are helping preserve our marine ecosystems while empowering coastal communities. These initiatives are part of a broader collaboration with the local government of Puerto Galera. Together with Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas and our trusted partners, we’re building a sustainable future for everyone! What is Sustainable Development Goal 14? Each year, the UN General Assembly is a moment to take stock of our progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, or #SDGs. Sustainable Development Goal 14 is the primary #SDG related to the ocean. It is a global recognition of the fundamental role the ocean plays in sustaining all life - including ours - on Earth, and it underpins the achievement of many other SDGs. It is based on 10 targets, to which the #OceanDecade contributes to deliver the science we need for the ocean we want: 1️⃣ Reduce marine pollution 2️⃣ Protect and restore ecosystems 3️⃣ Reduce ocean acidification 4️⃣ Sustainable fishing 5️⃣ Conserve coastal and marine areas 6️⃣ End subsidies contributing to overfishing 7️⃣ Increase the economic benefits from sustainable use of marine resources 8️⃣ Increase scientific knowledge, research and technology for ocean health 9️⃣ Support small-scale fishers 1️⃣0️⃣ Implement and enforce international sea law See how the #OceanDecade contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: https://ow.ly/Ymt850Tkh4n #SDG14 #UNGA #UNGA79

Blue Alliance and our local partner in Pemba, the Kwanini Foundation, are committed to promoting eco-friendly practices to establish sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities, helping to reduce illegal and unsustainable fishing practices. As one of their livelihood and community development projects, Kwanini Foundation is promoting the use of mobile chicken coops among residents of Makangale, Pemba. 🐔 The Kwanini team has provided training on these 'chicken tractors' and will assist residents of Makangale in acquiring them through raffles. The mobile chicken coops are transforming how farmers care for their chickens and land by naturally fertilising the soil, reducing cleaning time, and promoting healthier flocks with lower costs. They also provide natural pest control, protect crops and chickens from predators, and can be moved closer to homes to prevent theft. This simple solution offers a sustainable approach to farming that benefits both the environment and local communities. ➡️ Learn more about our livelihood initiatives in North Pemba: https://bit.ly/48W16Uy Global Fund for Coral Reefs #Pemba #Zanzibar #SustainableFarming #ChickenTractor #CommunityDevelopment #MarineConservation #KwaniniFoundation

  • Today, we introduce Sriwahyuni Salatun in our #FieldStories series, where we showcase the local perspectives and vital work of team members in our Marine Protected Areas in Indoensia, Zanzibar, and the Philippines. 🌎 Sriwahyuni is one of the four head rangers of Blue Alliance Banggai (Areas 6 + 7). Together with local authorities, they are conducting 24/7/365 land and seaborne patrols within the two MPAs, ensuring enhanced biodiversity protection and control of destructive and unsustainable fishing activities for an expansive 24,461 hectares of marine and coastal ecosystems. In 2023 alone, the local ranger team collectively completed an impressive 660 hours of patrol! 🐠🌊 What motivated Sriwahyuni to dedicate herself to the ocean? "My journey into the world of conservation began in 2010. I started to realise that several endemic species in Sulawesi were highly protected, yet their natural ecosystems were under threat in my region. In the area where I live, there’s a place where turtles lay their eggs, which had been managed responsibly, but it became marginalised by a sand mining company. I have always loved watching the hatchlings and felt joy seeing them released into their natural environment. Seeing these turtles lose their homes feels like humans being forcibly evicted from their own land by irresponsible people. I hope my small steps in marine conservation will have a big impact on the community and environment where I live, ensuring it remains naturally preserved. I want people to continue living comfortably and happily, with sustainable sources of food and income." If you share Sriwahyuni's passion for marine conservation or want to share what inspired YOU to protect the ocean, like and share this post or leave a comment. 🙌 Together we are helping the planet, one Marine Protected Area at a time. ➡️ Learn more about our team, work, and positive impact in Banggai, Indonesia: https://bit.ly/3Hnvjjo IUCN Nomad Archipelago #VoicesFromTheField #MeetTheTeam #LocalCommnity #Indonesia #Banggai #BlueAlliance #MarineConservation #Sustainability #ForCoral #SustainableFishing

The 2024 State of the World’s Mangroves is out! 🌳 Mangroves are among the world’s most misunderstood, fragile, and valuable ecosystems. Despite representing less than 1% of all tropical forests worldwide, mangroves support the lives of millions of people while protecting our planet. The 2024 State of the World’s Mangroves, published by Global Mangrove Alliance, highlights the tremendous advances that have been made on multiple fronts to safeguard these ecosystems. It showcases progress in: science and understanding; collaboration and information sharing; practical management interventions; and the many policy, legal, and financial tools that will help to secure a better future for these ecosystems. Key insights include: 🌱 Globally, 40% of the world’s remaining mangrove forests are in protected areas. 🌱 While mangrove losses in the past were considerable, rates of loss are declining and fell by 44% between 2000 and 2020. 🌱 However, half of the world’s mangrove provinces are considered threatened. 🌱 The global picture of mangrove extent is better than ever: the latest Global Mangrove Watch dataset offers a sixfold increase in mapping resolution and coverage of six additional regions with mangroves. For the first time, it is possible to separate out notable impacts, and the report found that conversion to aquaculture, oil palm plantations, and rice cultivation together explain 43% of mangrove losses between 2000 and 2020. As part of the #OceanDecade, scientists across the world are working together to enhance our understanding of mangroves, and to improve how they are valued and managed through initiatives like the Global Ocean Decade Programme for Blue Carbon (GO-BC), the Observatory of Mangroves and its maretories in Brazil, and more. 👉 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/gUrgR-6

🌏 GFCR: Advancing Climate Action and Resilience 🌊 As part of the #GFCRxSDGs series of posts, discover how GFCR-supported programmes are building resilience for communities, economies, and ecosystems. Through a holistic approach with an impact that goes beyond ocean ecosystems, the GFCR is contributing to all 17 of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through action on land and in the water. The Global Fund for Coral Reefs is helping drive progress on SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 15: Life on Land, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy by supporting initiatives that help reduce pollution that harm reefs, convert waste to biofuel alternatives, and improve water quality and sanitation in coastal regions while helping protect adjacent ecosystems. These are implemented through the following key action points: 🪸 Advancing programme activities and enterprises that help safeguard biological diversity and its critical role in maintaining ecosystems, such as sustainable aquaculture investments, innovations on waste management facilities, the use of natural fertilisers, and upcycling marine plastics. 🪸 Promoting the development of financial mechanisms, such as the Coral Conservation Trust Funds and Blue Carbon Credits, to encourage sustainable management and climate resilience through ecosystem-based approaches. 🪸 Supporting initiatives that reduce the flow of untreated wastewater and other pollutants to the reefs, helping improve the well-being of surrounding ecosystems and local communities. 🪸 Helping provide access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy sources through waste-to-value plants producing biofuel alternatives and reducing waterborne disease risks. 🪸 Focusing on biodiversity-friendly practices including sustainable sea cucumber and crab farming, and integrating environmental conservation with economic development. 🪸 Funding coral restoration efforts across various regions including advanced land-based coral farms that accelerate growth and scalability.  🪸 Supporting the implementation of resilience-based solutions for marine ecosystems and vulnerable coastal communities, particularly in Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries. Through efforts to help manage land, waterway, and marine pollution, the GFCR-supported programmes strengthen efforts to protect coral reefs, which are vital to the health of adjacent marine and terrestrial ecosystems crucial to biodiversity and well-being of communities. This holistic effort not only advances a more sustainable and resilient future, but also helps promote effective and equitable climate change adaptation and mitigation measures, contributing to greater climate resilience. 🌊🌳 #Sustainability #SDG13 #SDG15 #SDG6 #SDG7 #ClimateAction #LifeOnLand #CleanWater #CleanEnergy #CoralReefs #GFCR #ForCoral Post 5 of 9
