🔷 Two weeks ago, we concluded our symposium in honor of 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞 - a brilliant man, always curious about scientific progress, and a true gentleman who served as ILL's 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫. 🔹 John began his neutron scattering career in the 1960s in Europe, which at the time boasted the most dynamic community. He quickly established himself as one of the leading specialists in the field. 🔹 He spent time at Oxford and Harwell, where he was Neutron Beam Coordinator, before coming to the ILL. His influence and support were probably instrumental in the SERC’s decision that 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐊 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐋𝐋 to become the Institute’s third Associate. 🔸 After completing his term of office at the ILL, he returned to his native Australia to take up the post of Professor at the Research School of Chemistry of the The Australian National University. His career as an active scientist spanned many decades and he won a number of prestigious awards. 🎞 We are making the full recordings of the two-day colloquium available https://lnkd.in/dQXHbd6F Karen Edler (Lund), Giovanna Fragneto (ESS), Elliot Gilbert (ANSTO), 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩 𝐆𝐮𝐭𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐮𝐧𝐝 (ILL), Theyencheri Narayanan (ESRF), Emily Ryan (ILL), Ralf Schweins (ILL)

💊 What if, in the future, taking medication became 𝙖 𝙤𝙣𝙚-𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩, with active molecules being released at the optimal rate over several weeks? 𝐀𝐈𝐃𝐒 remains a major global health challenge, with an estimated 𝟑𝟗 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 and 1.5 million new infections each year. Though antiretroviral therapy provides effective treatment and prevention, its success is often hindered by the need for 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. ⏳ There is thus significant interest in the development of 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 that enable consistent and sustained drug release for extended periods. Researchers from Queen's University Belfast have recently published the 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟-𝐨𝐟-𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭 of a long-acting drug delivery platform based on a novel peptoid-peptide material! 🗞 Find out more in our latest science highlight : link shared in 1st comment! 👇🏽 #SmallAngleNeutronScattering #MaterialsScience #NeutronsScience #HealthcareInnovation #DrugDelivery #LongActingTherapy #HIV #AIDS

Inspired by 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, advanced by 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐬 ▶ Transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy is crucial for Europe to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. A recent study explores 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 inspired by methane hydrate structures, highlighting how neutrons can advance this - and other critical energy storage technologies - for a sustainable future. 🧊 Methane hydrate (a solid compound similar to ice) naturally stores methane within a water lattice. Inspired by this, Dr. Mirian Elizabeth Casco develops energy storage systems for gases like methane and hydrogen. These systems could enable sustainable, 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 in frozen soils and deep-sea sediments. 🔎 Dr. Mirian Elizabeth Casco’s research, integrating neutron techniques, examines how hydrogen behaves in methane hydrate systems. Neutrons uniquely measure vibrational bands, providing 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬. 📈 Initial results show that the amount of methane hydrate produced is greatly influenced 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬, with 𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 speeding up its formation. 👀 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦: https://lnkd.in/dmj8TpVJ #renewable #energy #storage #climateneutrality #Neutrons4society

The SHARPER instrument at the ILL came online during the second 2024 reactor cycle. The recent work and achievements, as well as the upgraded capabilities, are highlighted in this video. While the first 2025 cycle will most likely be devoted to commissioning, the SHARPER team expects to welcome users soon! The instrument has also been moved (through the roof of one of ILL’s guide halls) to a new placement at the end of the new H15 neutron guide, designed and engineered at the ILL, which is the most complex neutron guide system ever realized. SHARPER is a time-focusing time-of-flight spectrometer designed for quasi-elastic and inelastic scattering built and operated at the ILL by the Léon Brillouin Laboratory (Saclay, France) as a CRG (Collaborating Research Group) instrument. The original instrument SHARP (Spectromètre Hybride Alpes Région Parisienne, former IN6) was upgraded in the framework of ILL’s Endurance programme through the SHARP+ project, which has just been completed. To highlight the new features, and it has been decided to rename the instrument SHARPER (Spectromètre Hybride Alpes Région Parisienne Etendu en Résolution).

Neutrons can probe food structure and help us unraveling structural changings that foodstuffs undergo during digestion. Within this framework, we performed our last experiments at D33 in ILL - Institut Laue Langevin combining traditional approaches and microfluidic sample environments. Many thanks to Olga Matsarskaia for the constant support during our staying at D33; to Michel Bonnaud for sample stage development; to supporting experimentalist Francesca Dessì; to Felix Roosen-Runge for great supervision in the development of such non trivial experiments.
