Cyclone Gabrielle caused widespread devastation, including severe flooding and power outages in the Hawke’s Bay region in mid-February 2023, leading to a National Civil Defence Emergency and a National Grid Emergency. This week, we proudly accepted the Collaboration award at the Transpower Engineering and Technology Excellence Awards 2024 for our joint efforts with Ventia and Transpower New Zealand in the Cyclone Gabrielle Protection and Automation Emergency Response and Restoration for Redclyffe project. The judges said: "The nomination provided an excellent example of collaboration. It didn’t matter who you worked for or the job you do—everyone got stuck in. The team were always ahead of the game and never in a position of failing to meet demand. This is a true testament to the culture of collaboration between Beca, Ventia, Transpower and other service partners in the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle." The process of restoring and improving the region’s power system involved repurposing an existing building as a temporary relay room, deploying new protection schemes, and managing a complex, multi-stage outage sequence. Despite numerous challenges, our collective efforts quickly restored resilience to the Redclyffe protection systems and minimised disruptions. Congratulations to everyone involved in this project. As we celebrate this achievement, we also remember everyone impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle. We’re still buzzing from the 2024 Water New Zealand Conference and Expo and are thankful to all the organisers for making it happen. The conference was a fantastic reminder of the crucial role the water industry plays in protecting our communities and environment. It was also a great opportunity to celebrate some key achievements. We’re proud to have brought home a few wins: * Hynds Presentation of the Year: Garry Macdonald and John Crawford for their presentation on biosolids-to-biochar pathways for Aotearoa. * Hynds Paper of the Year: Craig White for his written paper on an innovative approach to addressing capacity issues in Mangawhai’s wastewater treatment system. * Honourable mention to Ian Macbeth as runner-up for his paper on the benefits of collaborative work with operators to improve performance at Clutha District Council's wastewater treatment plants. * Jonathan Reed was awarded a Gold Shovel with his admittance to the New Zealand Chapter of the Select Society of Sanitary Sludge Shovellers (5S). * Rob Fullerton was made a Water NZ Honorary Life Member. Notably, Lorraine Kendrick made her final appearance as Water NZ President before handing over the mantle, and Troy Brockbank completed his six-year term on the Water NZ Board. Congratulations to all the winners! We’re already looking forward to next year and are excited to reconnect with clients, industry peers, and bring fresh ideas to the table. #WaterNewZealand #Beca #MakeEverydayBetter

As a trusted partner of Melbourne Airport for over 25 years, we’re proud to be supporting them on a range of exciting aviation projects. On a recent site visit, our Australian Managing Director, Andrew Mailer, checked in on the Taxiway Zulu Project which is just one example of our ongoing work. The Taxiway Zulu project is the airport's largest airfield project, and will enhance airport operations to and from the runways, creating space for future terminal expansion. We've also served as Lead Consultant on Melbourne Airport's Third Runway Project, and we're excited to continue building on this strong partnership. #MelbourneAirport #Beca #MakeEverydayBetter

New Zealand is going to have to make some big calls on repairing, replacing and moving away from some infrastructure as the climate changes. In Newsroom NZ today, Robert Hales argues we should plan and consult communities now. He draws on the wisdom of past generations, showing how the lessons and advice passed down can guide us in making these tough decisions. Organisations in New Zealand are taking a significant step toward sustainability as some medium to large companies are now required to report on Climate-Related Disclosure (CRD), with Australia following suit. Transition planning is a key part of the reporting regime for CRD in New Zealand, and can be challenging due to the uncertain future impacts of climate change. Kristin Renoux and Laura Robichaux explore a potential solution: Dynamic Adaptive Pathway Planning (DAPP), a scalable way to flexibly plan for investment in climate adaptation for assets and communities. In a tight or dangerous spot when inspecting infrastructure, who’re you going to call? In Newsroom NZ today, Marcus Hall details the development of PIPE-i, the robot making surveying safer. By inspecting dangerous assets and creating a virtual digital twin, not only does PIPE-i keep people safe, but provides an accurate representation of the structure for improved asset management. This World Mental Health Day, we’re highlighting the importance of taking time out to pause, breathe and recharge. At Beca, we offer regular 15-minute guided meditation sessions, beautifully led by our own Jeannine Walsh, a trained mindfulness-based stress reduction instructor, offering a moment of calm and balance in the middle of our busy schedules. These sessions are available online, making it easy for every team member to join, no matter their location. This is all part of our “Be Mindful” pillar, which supports the wellbeing of our entire team and reinforces our commitment to a healthier and more connected workplace. #WorldMentalHealthDay #Mindfulness #Wellbeing #ConnectedWorkplaces #Beca #MakeEverydayBetter

Congratulations to our Gender@Beca team who were ‘Highly Commended’ at the 2024 Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Australasia Awards, in recognition of our efforts to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in engineering. Our Australian employee-led initiative, Gender@Beca, is dedicated to increasing the representation of women and gender-diverse individuals in the engineering profession. A key driver of this initiative’s success is our STEAM Partnership with The Mac.Robertson’s Girls High School in Melbourne, which aims to encourage young women to pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Kylie Harris, Head of People and Culture Australia says, “I’m so proud of what our Gender@Beca team has achieved over the past four years. Their hard work has made a real difference, and this recognition means a lot as we continue pushing for more progress.” Well done to our tireless team (two members - Kylie Lim and Kate Patterson pictured below) and all other 2024 entrants!
