⬇️ Great to see this post from cluster member Carbery Group on how they embed circular bioeconomy into their business.
Every week is #CircularEconomyWeek at Carbery! Since our foundation more than 50 years ago, Carbery has focused on circularity, reusing resources and minimising any waste – it is the central model of our HQ in Ballineen, and we are a proud part of the bioeconomy. 🔁 For over 40 years, we have used whey permeate to generate bioethanol. Today, we produce 12 million litres of bioethanol annually, most of which is used as a biofuel which equates to a reduction of over 16,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. 🔁 Bio Gas is a co-product of creating bioethanol is stillage waste. Since 1982, we have been using Anaerobic Digestion systems to generate biome thane, a carbon neutral fuel, in our CHP boilers to generate steam. This provides 9% of our total steam requirements in Ballineen. 🔁 The final product is a nutrient-rich, certified Organic fertiliser. We generate over 15,000 tonnes of this organic fertiliser, which returns to our farmers in West Cork as a bio-stimulant for grass and crops. We’re passionate about sustainable production and supply chains at Carbery Group. It’s part of who we are, and why we have been implementing circular economy practices in our production facility for over 30 years. #circulareconomy #sustainability #sustainableproduction #sustainablesupplychain

🌍Bioeconomy Ireland Week 2024 is running from the 14th to 20th of October and marks it's fifth year. I've been privileged to be part of the organising committee since I started at the Marine Institute as #bluebioeconomy programme manager. In that time I've collaborated with colleagues from within the Marine Institute, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Circular Bioeconomy Cluster, Bord Iascaigh Mhara - Ireland's Seafood Development Agency and others on webinars, events, and Story Maps. 📚This year, I'm running a national library campaign (more on that again!) to help raise awareness of what the bioeconomy is, what is happening locally and opportunities it provides. 🌱The theme for 2024 is 'Demonstrating Biobased Solutions for a Greener Ireland' and the events taking place across the week will highlight the progress in the development of the Irish bioeconomy, and showcase the growing potential of the bioeconomy for a sustainable future. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to coordinate this week by the organising committee including Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications BiOrbic, Bioeconomy SFI Research Centre Irish Bioeconomy Foundation Teagasc Munster Technological University and others. For more information visit 🔗www.irishbioeconomy.ie and keep an eye on social media for more news on events and activities. #IrishBioeconomy #BIW2024

Yesterday, the message of the #bioeconomy washed over #IFIB like the rain that gently washed over the city of #Bologna. The day was very intense, as well as an agenda full of presentations covering all the approaches that need to be taken into account to keep pushing for the bioeconomy to be not only a sector that Europe leads globally, but an approach that guides our political, economic, and social decision making. Europe has come a long way in aspects such as investment in scale-up infrastructures, its enormous scientific and technological capacity, or the improvement of the entrepreneurial spirit and the creation of start-ups, but we must continue to move forward with an ambitious aspiration for these achievements to materialise in innovations that reach the market. Nor should we forget the whole aspect of communication and the importance of highlighting that we are developing biosolutions to real problems, bearing in mind that we all, as consumers, make daily decisions about what economy we want to use our wallets for. I'd like to finish with a special thanks to SPRING - Italian Circular Bioeconomy Cluster for a great event organization, Mario Bonaccorso for inviting me to join the speakers team, Christian Patermann for being the best chairman, my round table colleagues from which I learnt so much: Morena Diazzi, Tatjana Schwabe-Marković, Catriona Power FRSA, Elaine Cullinan, and the BioINSouth partners gathered in the forum. Looking forward to meet you all in Torino next year!
