The International Energy Agency (IEA) #Renewables2024 report is out - here are the 🇪🇺 heating and cooling highlights 👇 🏙️ The EU is leading the way in #DistrictHeating decarbonisation, supported by RED III targets. The bloc is expected to reach 41% renewable district heat generation by 2030. ⚠️We’re not on track for net-zero by 2050. Projected renewable heat developments remain insufficient to displace fossil fuels. In the EU, existing policies are not ambitious enough for decarbonisation by 2050, as our Oeko-Institut e.V. report found earlier this year: https://lnkd.in/d9pJgp2i 🛠 Solar thermal heat consumption in buildings is expected to rise by 40%, led in part by the EU market, along with China and the Middle East. Direct geothermal heat use in buildings is also on the rise, with advances in drilling techniques and innovative business models stimulating the European market. Despite a 6.5% contraction in sales in 2023, Europe remains a leading market for heat pumps, the use of which is projected to expand >40% worldwide by 2030. 💡Industrial heat supply is changing: electricity consumption for process heat is set to triple by 2030. In Europe, solar heat for industrial processes is expected to increase 4x by 2030, with applications in textile, mining, aluminium refining, and food and beverage industries. 🌍 Globally, there is much to be done. Renewable heat consumption has expanded by 50%, driven by renewable electricity use for heat in non-energy-intensive industries and buildings. However, global heat demand outpaces the expansion of renewables, leading to more use of fossil fuels and a 5% increase in annual CO2 emissions from the heating sector by 2030.    🥵 Plus, what about cooling? Currently absent from the IEA report, it will soon become a challenge for many cities worldwide. According to Eurostat, 19% of the total population of the EU is unable to keep their home comfortably cool in summer. Without a plan for renewables-based as well as passive cooling solutions, households will face summer energy poverty as heatwaves become more frequent.
