As we race against time in our efforts to address climate change, Margie McCarthy, Director of Research and Policy Insights draws on insights from SEAI’s analysis, including the National Heat Study, to discuss how HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) can most effectively contribute to Ireland’s energy transition.

Congratulations to SEAI's very own Mary Holland who won the Women In STEM Maths Award last night. Mary is SEAI’s first senior energy statistician and she’s responsible for building Ireland’s annual energy balance, the definitive capture of Ireland’s energy system data. Her work means she can speak to every unit of electricity, every litre of oil, etc. used in Ireland and where/how it is used. She is a fantastic role model, demonstrating how maths matters in real life and how that passion can play a critical role in climate action. Women in STEM Summit & Awards

This week Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) hosted an information clinic for Houses of the Oireachtas Members and my team and I really enjoyed engaging directly with so many who attended. The large turnout and positive conversations with policymakers confirms there is a collective desire across the political system for strong climate action. This is very welcome as Ireland has tough policy choices to make when it comes to how we use energy. If we are to reach our greenhouse gas emission targets, or even come close, we need to rapidly increase the transition to cleaner energy sources and boost energy efficiency efforts. We have made notable strides in recent years in legislation, adopting very strong binding targets. Financial supports have increased to record levels, and several Government Taskforces are actively working to drive the key technologies that will help the transition to clean energy. We need to build on this momentum as SEAI’s latest analysis shows significant projected gaps remain to meet our legally binding national and EU obligations for 2030. Ireland’s energy challenge cannot be solved without a combination of hard policy solutions and individual actions. I want to thank the Oireachtas Members for attending SEAI’s Information Clinic and their positive engagement. I wish them well over the coming weeks. #energytransition #SEAI #oireachtas

To make our energy sustainable and to reduce emissions, focussing on the most impactful solutions is more urgent than ever. Just five key measures could deliver 90% of the greenhouse gas emission savings required for energy by 2030. “ Jim Scheer SEAI and Hannah Daly, UCC co-authored our latest blog on how to cut our dependence on fossil fuel rapidly.
