A Glimpse into Dublin Port’s Past: The Sandpiper Dredger Built in 1903, Sandpiper was a suction dredger, designed to keep shipping lanes clear and expand Dublin Port’s footprint. Before advanced machinery, dredging was backbreaking work, with crews manually clearing silt from the riverbed. But with Sandpiper’s arrival in 1904, Dublin Port embraced a new era of efficiency, reclaiming land and deepening waters to support Ireland’s growing maritime trade. 📍 Key Achievements of the Sandpiper: - Helped construct Alexandra Quay by pumping dredged material into massive concrete caissons - Made navigation safer in Dublin Bay, battling sandbanks and silt buildup - Was at the heart of port operations, even during historic events like the 1913 Lockout

Lord Mayor of Dublin Emma Blain casts a spear to become the ceremonial Lord Admiral of Dublin Port, alongside Barry O Connell, Dublin Port Chief Executive. The tradition dates to 1488 when Lord Mayor Thomas Mayler vaulted a spear into the sea to mark Dublin’s boundary to the east. 📸 Robbie Reynolds
