We are so proud of our amazing student ambassadors who continue to advocate for returning to learning, inclusion, and changing the landscape for those coming behind. #ALF #StarAwards #AdultLiteracyforLife #Reducingstigma #Inclusion
Our final shortlisted project for the ESF+ Special Recognition Prize at 2025 Aontas Star Awards LOETB’s Adult Literacy Project, Beyond the Barriers. LOETB recognised the value of adult learners in their Literary Service sharing their personal journeys with literacy and to act as advocates for returning to education and training. The initiative focused on filming and collecting stories from student ambassadors who each have faced unique challenges. The project was undertaken to highlight the incredible journeys of the group of students, and to shine a light on the stigma and challenges they faced. To date, over twelve learners from diverse backgrounds have participated as ambassadors like Ailish who returned to education to learn digital skills after losing her sight as an adult. Her story will be on youtube in the coming days. Cathy reclaimed her educational experience at the age of 68 when she returned to the classroom after suffering mistreatment like many of her generation proving that anything is possible. Her story will also be available to watch soon. Each learner is given the opportunities to develop essential self-advocacy and to enhance literacy, digital literacy, and language competencies. It is through these stories that a culture of lifelong learning is celebrated. #Euinmyregion Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation
