  • India is reeling under heavy monsoons and floods. Compassion has no season! But a tough life on the streets can get even harder during monsoons. Kindness towards animals is embedded even in our constitution. Article 51A(g) of the Indian Constitution states that ‘it is the duty of every citizen to have compassion for living creatures.’ There are many little things we can do to extend a little kindness toward street animals during the rainy season. We can offer street animals shelter in our compounds, under our porches, in our parking lots, and under our cars. Encourage others to do the same. Speak up if you see someone denying shelter to a street animal during monsoons. Keep contacts of animal activists and authorities handy, and inform them if we see an animal in distress. Share these contacts with other animal lovers in your area. If we see an animal who is sick or has a minor injury, take them to the nearby vet or arrange for a local activist or animal welfare organisation to take a look at them. Street animals often take refuge under cars during monsoons. We must check car engines and underneath the car before starting the vehicle. We can join our local feeder community so street animals have access to healthy food and water even in the monsoons. What’s your hack to help street animals during monsoons? #AnimalProtection #AnimalWelfare #Monsoons #Compassion

  • We would like to congratulate our member ‘Kodaikanal Society For Protection And Care For Animals’ (KSPCA) for their exceptional work in rabies control. A news article published in the Times of India details KSPCA and Mission Rabies India’s ‘catch-vaccinate-release’ campaign that has resulted in zero human rabies deaths over the past seven years! Kodaikanal, which now has a ‘rabies-controlled' certification, has also achieved the feat of an almost 100% vaccination status for all the dogs and cats in the town. We are certain this project will inspire many such initiatives for animal welfare & protection. • FIAPO has written to Members of Parliament appealing for stringent laws against sexual crimes against animals. https://lnkd.in/gfX7n5Fk. The letter, citing articles and reports, draws attention towards the urgent need and glaring omission of provisions criminalising and penalising sexual crimes against animals.  The previous Indian Penal Code(IPC), contained provisions under Section 377 which criminalised sexual crimes against animals. However, the newly enacted BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) has NO such provisions, leaving animals even more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse without any proportionate recourse in the law. The letter is in line with our continued efforts in demanding strict legal provisions for sexual crimes against animals. Among other steps, we have also sent an RTI to National Crime Records Bureau, asking for details of cases pertaining to bestiality (term used in section) filed under section 377. #BNS #BNSact #PCA #IPC #SexualCrimesAgainstAnimals #AnimalProtection #AnimalWelfare

  • 🐾This ‘World Day For The End Of Speciesism’ (27th August, 2024), let’s explore what speciesism is and how it impacts our lives!🌍 What is Speciesism and How Does it Impact Our Lives? Just like racism and sexism, speciesism is a form of discrimination. Speciesism is the belief that one species, typically humans, is superior to others. This mindset leads to the exploitation and mistreatment of non-human animals, often justifying their use for food, clothing, entertainment, and experimentation. Why does it matter? Discriminatory and Ethical Concerns: Just like racism and sexism, speciesism is a form of discrimination. It disregards the interests and well-being of animals, treating them as mere resources rather than sentient beings with their own rights. Environmental Impact:  The exploitation of animals contributes significantly to environmental degradation. Animal agriculture, for instance, is a major driver of deforestation, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Health Implications:  Practices rooted in speciesism, such as factory farming, often lead to the spread of zoonotic diseases and antibiotic resistance, posing serious risks to human health. Together, we can eradicate speciesism. Spread awareness, challenge stereotypes, and advocate for change. Let's create a world of empathy and understanding. 🌍 #Speciesism #EndSpeciesism #EqualityForAll #AntiSpeciesism #AnimalRights #Veganism #Sentience

  • On World Plant Milk Day, let’s reflect on how plant-based milks are a smarter choice over dairy! 🌱🥛 VARIETY: From yummy soy, creamy almond, coconut (perfect for Indian desserts), and flavourful oat (recommended for coffee lovers), those seeking healthy plant-based milks are spoilt for choice! What’s more you can even experiment with rice milk, sesame, or hemp milk. ! EASE AND ACCESSIBILITY: With most online stores and even some kirana stores stocking these varieties, going plant-based is getting easier and more convenient. But the beauty of plant-based milk is that you can even make it at home! Environment, Animal Welfare, Health: Dairy milk has huge environmental implications, is often adulterated, laced with antibiotics, and derived through extreme exploitation of animals such as cows and buffaloes. Studies have shown that using plant-based milks significantly reduces your carbon footprint, and can help reduce risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Choosing plant-based milks is not only ethically and environmentally better, but also reduces risks to human health. On all three counts — plant-based milks outrank dairy, which has been reported as being harmful to animals, the environment, and human health! Let’s raise our glass to the smarter choice — one that’s cruelty-free, healthy, and delicious too! #WorldPlantMilkDay#PlantBasedMilk #DairyFree #NutMilk #OatMilk #SoyMilk #CoconutMilk #RiceMilk #HempMilk #PotatoMilk #VeganFoodRecipes #NonDairy #SustainableFood #Vegan #Animal Rights #GoVegan

  • FIAPO has issued a press release (https://shorturl.at/NVHWj) condemning the killing of a female elephant in WB by a ‘hulla party ’(group of villagers enlisted and controlled by forest departments to keep elephants away from human habitats). The killing of the female elephant with a flaming iron spear in WB (West Bengal) shows a systemic failure to address human-elephant conflict. On 15 August, the day of India’s Independence, a hulla party chased away a group of elephants that had strayed into Jhargram Town. A man had previously died in an encounter with a tusker from the same herd. Hulla parties, which are controlled by the state forest departments, are supposed to use drums and other non-violent means to drive away elephants. But in this case, the crowd threw flaming iron spears at the elephants, one of which pierced the elephant’s back. A video that is being widely circulated shows the elephant with the fiery spear sticking out of its back, in agony. In the video, a child is heard telling her father, “Please let her go; she is in pain.” The elephant died the next day of its wounds. The death of the female elephant points to the complete failure of the forest department’s systems for managing human elephant conflict. Further, the use of the burning spear is in contempt of a 2018 Supreme Court order that specifically banned the use of spikes or spears. The failure of the forest department to find humane solutions is resulting in the deaths of humans and elephants alike. FIAPO has demanded that: - The WB government immediately constitute an inquiry into this incident; - The WB forest department immediately constitute a committee comprising experts on human-elephant conflict mitigation, including NGOs working on the ground in West Bengal and in other states where successful measures have been deployed, and other departments; and - The WB Forest Ministry must suspend all hulla committees until a fresh protocol, devised by experts with training for mitigation of conflict, is put into place. 🚨Take Action Now: 🚨 Make a difference by spreading the word and signing this petition - https://shorturl.at/JzfjU. #WBElephantKilling #ProtectElephants #WildlifeProtectionAct #StopAnimalCruelty #wildlifeprotection #wildlifeindia #wildlifeconservation #westbengal #elephantsofinstagram #keralaelephants #animalwelfare #elephants

  • On India’s 78th Independence Day (15th August 2024), we plead the case for five basic freedoms for animals! The ‘5 Freedoms of Animal Welfare’ are internationally accepted guidelines ensuring animals are protected and lead lives as nature intended. They are: Freedom from Hunger and Thirst Freedom from Discomfort Freedom from Pain, Injury, and Disease Freedom to Express Normal Behavior Freedom from Fear and Distress The BNS Act. that has replaced IPC, has effectively scrapped Section 377 that recognised sexual crimes against animals, leaving animal victims vulnerable and without legal recourse. Slaughterhouses, dairy farms, labs, zoos, aquariums, fish farms, and industries such as leather and wool, exploit animals on a daily basis. We can do our bit by adapting a vegan lifestyle; taking care of community animals in our campus, workplace and near our homes; avoiding zoos and aquariums while travelling; choosing to purchase only vegan & cruelty-free products and brands; and keeping ourselves aware of animal protection laws. All animals deserve a life of dignity, compassion and the five basic freedoms. Let’s work towards such a world! #IndependenceDay #IndependenceDay2024 #FiveFreedoms #5Freedoms #India #FreedomForAll #UntilEveryAnimalIsFree #Veganism #AntiSpeciesism
