WHISPER energy project

Renewable Energy Power Generation

Whisper is an energy transition project with a goal to reduce emissions from the long-distance maritime industry.

About us

WHISPER is a 4-year energy transition project, with the goal to of developing a solution that can significantly reduce emissions from the long-distance maritime industry. WHISPER aims to demonstrate around 30% fuel savings on a retrofit bulk carrier and more than 15% on a retrofit containership. A strong and diverse consortium of experts from across Europe will develop a fully modular retrofit solution, comprising a wind-solar hybrid power system to significantly reduce auxiliary engine emissions and a tilting wing sail system to provide wind-assisted propulsion, significantly reducing main engine fuel consumption and emissions. The WHISPER project has received funding from the European Union‘s Horizon Europe research and innovation program under grant agreement N° 101096577. Lloyd’s Register is funded by UK Research and Innovation under project agreement N° 1006574.

  • Solbian Energie Alternative Srl has entered the operational phase of the WHISPER project. By mid-2025, more than 200 kWp of photovoltaic capacity will be installed to support the decarbonization of marine transportation. This ambitious installation will feature approximately 1400 PV modules mounted on specially designed structures engineered to endure the harshest marine conditions. The solar modules, produced by Solbian, incorporate high-efficiency monocrystalline cells enhanced with their patented double metallic grid system. The front grid optimizes current harvesting, while the rear grid provides exceptional mechanical support. Together, these grids create a robust double shield, ensuring resistance to cracks and bending—critical for maritime applications.

🏅 OceanWings is honoured to announce the receipt of Approval in Principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), for its Wind Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS). The approval was awarded yesterday in Houston, during the Maritime Decarbonization Conference, where Emmanuel Schalit, CEO of OceanWings had the opportunity to chair a Wind Propulsion roundtable. « The limited availability of alternative fuels combined with ambitious decarbonization objectives from the IMO mean that energy saving technologies will be essential for a cleaner maritime industry. Wind assisted propulsion technologies promise significant fuel consumption savings and reduced emissions without the need for onshore infrastructure. Along with safety excellence, our deep technical expertise in mechanical and structural analysis, stability and sustainability solutions makes us the ideal collaborator for innovative projects like this one from OceanWings, » said Roy Bleiberg, ABS Vice President, North America Business Development. Built on a shared vision for sustainable shipping, "Receiving this AIP from ABS represents a new essential milestone on our quest to cut CO2 emissions and proves our technology meets the shipping industry expectations and that we are ready to scale-up. », said Emmanuel Schalit, CEO of OceanWings. A heartfelt thank you to the event organizers, attendees, and fellow speakers for creating a platform to exchange ideas and collaborate toward a greener future. #MDCAmericas2024 #WindAssistedPropulsion #OceanWings #WindAssistedPropulsionSystems #WAPS Maritime Decarbonisation Community
