A new milestone for sustainability and a European first, achieved through the collaboration between the Enel Group and Aeroporti di Roma (ADR). ADR has inaugurated Europe's largest self-consumption solar plant within an operational airport area at Fiumicino Airport. With an installed capacity of 22 MWp and approximately 55,000 solar panels, this innovative solar farm will generate more than 30 GWh of clean energy annually—enough to meet the electricity needs of approximately 11,000 households. The plant will enhance the airport’s energy efficiency, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and avoiding the emission of about 11,000 tons of CO₂ every year. Developed by the Enel Group in collaboration with Circet Italia S.p.a., this project marks a crucial step in ADR's journey toward energy efficiency and decarbonization, supporting its ambitious goal of making Fiumicino and Ciampino airports Net Zero Carbon by 2030. This initiative further solidifies our strategic partnership in driving the energy transition and advancing sustainability on a global scale. Today marks the inauguration of the new #SolarFarm at Fiumicino airport - the largest self-consumption photovoltaic plant in a European airport, and the 2nd biggest in the world. 🌍 Designed by ADR, and developed by Enel Group in collaboration with Circet Italia S.p.a., the solar farm spans 2.5 km along Runway 3 and features approximately 55,000 monocrystalline silicon panels with a capacity of 22 MWp. It will generate more than 30 million kWh per year - reducing CO₂ emissions by more than 11,000 tons. This launch represents a first, significant step towards the airport reaching an installed power of 60 Mwp in the next 5 years, with the installation of additional solar farms within the perimeter of the current area. The plant testifies to the successful results of a fruitful cooperation: we managed to switch on the entire system in 360 days (3 months earlier than established) thanks to the #teamwork carried out with Enel Group, ADR Ingegneria S.p.A. and ADR Infrastrutture S.p.A. ♻️ This milestone, in line with the vision of sustainable development that we share with our holding company Mundys, brings us closer to achieving #NetZeroCarbon by 2030, twenty years ahead of the industry target, by utilizing clean energy and reducing dependency on fossil fuels. “The launch of this #SolarFarm reinforces our commitment to the green transition and #decarbonization, and represents a unique achievement in the global airport sector,” our CEO, Marco Troncone, highlighted. “The increase in energy independence will significantly reduce our environmental impact, in line with the sustainable development model that we have been building for years.” Minister Gilberto #PichettoFratin (Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica), who spoke at the event, stated: “The air transport sector offers several opportunities for research and development of innovative solutions for decarbonization, and Aeroporti di Roma has been at the forefront of this valuable endeavor for years. This photovoltaic plant proves how the energy transition can generate growth opportunities not only for in terms of business – but also for citizens, who will now benefit from an even greener and more innovative hub”. The presentation was also attended by our Chairman Vincenzo Nunziata, ENAC - Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile’s Chairman Pierluigi #DiPalma, Mundys Chairman Giampiero #Massolo, Fiumicino Mayor Mario Baccini, Francesca Gostinelli Head of Enel X Global Retail and Giorgio zampetti, Director General of Legambiente. ✈️ #SolarFarm #TeamWork #TogetherBeyondFlying
