🔬🤔 Why do some patients resist immunotherapy? Eduardo Bonavita – Junior Group Leader at Humanitas Research and Assistant Professor at Humanitas University, is investigating dendritic cells, key players in priming the immune system against tumours. Funded by Worldwide Cancer Research, Bonavita’s lab will explore why some patients don’t respond to immunotherapy and develop strategies to reactivate these crucial immune cells. Using cutting-edge technologies, including preclinical models and multi-omics analyses, the research will focus on the transcription factor Bhlhe40, a potential regulator of anti-tumor immune responses. 🗣️ Yesterday, we were honored to host Laura Baranello from Karolinska Institutet for an insightful seminar on the interaction between the cancer-driving protein MYC and topoisomerases – enzymes that help untangle and relax DNA strands, enabling cells to read and copy genetic information. Introduced by Enrico Lugli, Baranello – recently awarded the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant – presented her latest research, unveiling how this interaction sustains cancer cell proliferation and how disrupting these processes could help halt disease progression. A huge thank you to Laura for sharing her expertise and advancing our understanding of cancer biology. We look forward to welcoming her back soon! #HumanitasResearch #Hunimed #CancerBiology #SeminarSeries

👁️🔬 Intraocular surgery presents unique challenges due to its microscopic scale, requiring extensive hands-on training with models that accurately replicate the biomechanical properties of ocular tissues. To address this need, the #3DInnovationLab at Humanitas Research developed #Eye 3D-Phantom (Eye-3DP): a highly detailed, 3D-printed anatomical model designed to mimic the posterior segment of the eye. The model was developed by researcher Nada Mansour, Paolo Oliva – Head of the 3D Innovation Lab, and Mario Romano 🇮🇹 – Full Professor of Ophthalmology at Humanitas University. Using PolyJet Stratasys J850 Digital Anatomy printing technology, the team recreated key structures such as the sclera, choroid, retina, and vitreous humor with customised photopolymer resins, also allowing the subretinal bleb induction between the retina and choroid. As a result, Eye-3DP replicates the mechanical behavior of ocular tissues: a model capable of supporting complex intraocular procedures, essential for training in advanced vitreoretinal surgery, now covered by a patent. By enhancing simulation realism, we aim to improve surgical proficiency and patient outcomes. 🚀 #HumanitasResearch #Hunimed #3DPrinting #SurgicalTraining #Ophthalmology #PrecisionSurgery #MedicalInnovation #Healthcare

🔬🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Marco Rasile and Dr. Erica Tagliatti for securing an Airalzh Grant for Young Researchers 2024! The team will investigate how the interaction between blood vessels and immune cells in the brain contributes to Alzheimer’s, focusing on gender differences. Their project, #TREASURE, tackles a pressing question: 𝑊ℎ𝑦 𝑑𝑜 𝑤𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛 𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑢𝑝 𝑡𝑤𝑜-𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑟𝑑𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐴𝑙𝑧ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑟’𝑠 𝑝𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠? By studying the role of #microglia, the brain’s immune cells, and key proteins like TREM2, their work could pave the way for personalised therapies. Supported by AIRALZH - Associazione Italiana Ricerca Alzheimer Onlus, this research represents a crucial step towards better diagnostics, prevention, and treatments for Alzheimer’s. 🧬💡 Find out more 👉 https://shorturl.at/162xj #HumanitasResearch #Hunimed #Neuroscience #ResearchInnovation

🚀🌟 We are excited to share the launch of #PHOENIX, an EU-funded project set to advance biomedical research with next-generation organ-on-chip (OOC) technologies. Founded by #Horizon Europe and coordinated by Politecnico di Milano, the project unites top-tier partners from Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain, integrating four precision technologies into OOC devices, and creating models that mimic human organs and tissues using stem cells. Elisa Di Pasquale – Head of the Cardiovascular Stem Cell Biology Lab at Humanitas Research, leads the Humanitas unit in PHOENIX. Her team will explore LMNA-dependent cardiomyopathy, a genetic disorder linked to heart failure, using OOC devices to uncover new therapeutic strategies where none currently exist. PHOENIX represents a leap toward ethical, efficient, and patient-centered biomedical innovation, enabling us to study diseases more accurately and develop therapies faster. #PHOENIXProject #HumanitasResearch #Hunimed #BiomedicalInnovation
