#WEDNESDAYSEEDS 🌾 🤓 Today, we dive into the ancient #history and #modern significance of #barley 🕰️ Alongside #wheat, barley, scientifically known as #Hordeumvulgare, was domesticated in the #FertileCrescent about 10.000 years ago, playing a vital role in the #diets of ancient societies across the #NearEast, including present-day #Israel, #Syria, #Turkey, #Iraq, and #Iran 🌏 🗿 Remarkably, #archaeological sites reveal barley cultivation dating back to around 8000 B.C., with remnants found at historical sites like Ali Kosh in Iran and Tell Mureybat in Syria. 🔍 In #Jordan, evidence of large-scale barley production dates back to ancient times, with two-rowed hulled barley discovered at #Beiha, north of #Petra, and ancient landraces like saifi cultivated in #Madaba. 🔙 👩🌾 These traditional landraces, preserved through generations of #farming, offer much more than a window into the #past: they provide a #geneticreservoir that can help improve modern barley varieties. Their #resilience and #adaptability make them #key 🗝️ to addressing #foodsecurity challenges today, particularly in Jordan’s arid #environments 🔥

🔙 As we've shared in previous posts, #ancientgrains like #einkorn, #emmer, and #spelt played a foundational role in the development of early civilizations ⏳ 📚 Originating in the #FertileCrescent, spanning #Jordan, #Palestine, #Lebanon, and beyond, these grains were among the first domesticated #crops, crucial to the food security of ancient societies. 🧐 What you may not know is how deeply rooted these grains are in Jordan's agricultural #history❗ 🌍 Local landraces like Norseyeh, Qatma, Safra Ma'an, and Malgotat Al-Shoubak have been cultivated in areas such as Jerash, Tafila, and Ma'an for centuries. Preserved through #traditionalfarming practices, they are well-adapted to local conditions and serve as a #geneticreservoir for improving modern #wheat varieties. 🌾 These ancient grains are not just a piece of history, they're vital to the #future of #sustainableagriculture.
