Founder and CEO, Sortedlife Husika Afrika Group | Director, Sortedlife International School and Leadership Institute | YALI and MasterCard Foundation Fellow | Envisioning Holistically Thriving African Communities
Through the invitation of the National Gender and Equality Commission, I attended the launch of the Gender and Education Movement/Commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). I was honored to represent & sign the plaque on behalf of Sortedlife (Husika Afrika) Group and YALI RLC EA Alumni Ke in my capacities as founder and CEO & Kilifi Chapter Lead respectively, joining the movement to support girls education. The Movement was official launched by Hon. Senator Veronica Maina, who on her speech stressed the value of education by noting that if it wasn't for the transformational power of education, she wouldn't have had the opportunity to among other things be the first General Secretary of a political party that formed the government. The legislature also stressed that education is the equalizer and for the girlchild to be equalized she must be given education. The Specific objectives of the Movement are to increase awareness on barriers to girls education among others. - The executive director of Girl Child Network, Mercy Musomi gave the welcoming remarks. Notable remarks were made by; - The CEO/Commission Secretary of NGEC Dr Purity Ngina who stressed that even though strides have been made towards ensuring that gender equality is realized, more still needs to be done, as 15% of girls still become pregnant before adulting, while the same percentage still go through FGM. - Dr. Sara Ruto from Echidna Giving who were the main sponsors of the event, and was represented by Mr. Nyakundi. - Hon. Chiggai Harriette, the Women's Rights Advisor to the President, who was represented by Madam Caroline. - Ms. Teresia Mbaika, CBS, PS State Department of Devolution. - Ismail Maalim Madey, PS State Department of Youth Affairs and Creative Economy. and - PS State Department of Education.
