SEI and partners in the Global Resilience Partnership are working with residents of an informal settlement of Nairobi to co-develop and test a smartphone app to bring them into a worldwide climate adaptation information-exchange network tailored to their needs. The app aims to help residents find measures to address climate change impacts in their communities and to give them a way to share their insights with other vulnerable urban areas. 👗 🩳 👚 To commemorate the International Day of Zero Waste themed “Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles,”we hosted an event in Nyayo Estate in partnership with the UNEP Regional office for Africa and the Alliance of Nairobi Metropolitan Residents Association (ANMRA). This event also marked the official unveiling of an air quality monitoring sensor in the estate and provided a platform to discuss effective methods for textile waste disposal. During the event, SEI's Anderson Kehbila, Ph.D., MBA highlighted the alarming impact of textile waste, noting that globally, the textile industry generates 92 million tonnes of waste annually. This accounts for 20% of global waste, with 7% ending in landfills. Textiles contribute to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable solutions. An engaging panel discussion recognized the challenges posed by the importation of second-hand clothes into African countries. Participants emphasized the need for stricter regulations to ensure that only high-quality clothes are imported. They argued that reducing reliance on second-hand imports could encourage local production, improve clothing quality, and extend longevity. The discussion also emphasized the importance of supportive policies and tax incentives to promote local textile production as a way of promoting economic growth while actively addressing environmental concerns. #IDZW

The fashion and textile industry is one of the largest contributors to global waste and pollution. Fast fashion trends, increasing consumerism, and limited recycling infrastructure have led to significant textile waste accumulation, particularly in urban areas. Addressing this challenge requires innovative approaches grounded in circular economy principles. Simple ways we can reduce fashion & textile waste at home: ♻️ Pass it on – Embrace hand-me-downs within the family. ✨ Get creative – Upcycle old clothes into something new. ❤️ Give back – Donate to charities or textile redistribution programs. Tomorrow, as we mark the International Day of Waste Management, SEI, in partnership with UNEP, will actively show air quality monitoring results at Nyayo Estate, Nairobi, to better understand how waste-related emissions impact residents’ health and the environment. We are excited to announce a new collaboration with Sameer Africa in partnership with UN Environment Programme Regional Office for Africa. As part of this initiative, we conducted an introductory meeting and a site visit at the facility to assess air quality concerns and explore environmentally sustainable solutions. Through this partnership with UNEP, we will provide technical expertise in air quality monitoring and deploy advanced air quality monitoring sensors to generate real-time data within Sameer Africa's premises.

How can an analysis of small-scale ventures support strategic decisions on whether, how, and what is needed to upscale circular economy (CE) flows of urban organic waste in low- and middle-income countries? The study investigates the scope, viability and potential of small-scale organic waste processing ventures in promoting a closed-loop flow of organic wastes in the circular economy. Plastic waste management and recycling activities have the potential to reduce the environmental impacts of plastic production and to tap the economic value of would-be waste materials through circular economy approaches. This report by SEI researchers focuses on the framework for establishing effective practices in Mombasa, Kenya, with policymaking, institutional support and regulations, and with implications for similar contexts elsewhere. We recently held a progress meeting to assess key milestones and implementation updates for the "Applying the Water-Energy-Food Nexus to Promote Ecosystem-Based Adaptation in the Ewaso Ng’iro North Catchment, Kenya" project funded by International Climate Initiative. This project seeks to support the Government of Kenya, five county governments (Laikipia, Samburu, Isiolo, Meru and Nyeri), local communities, and agro-based private enterprises to promote ecosystem-based adaptation practices and integrated planning for water, energy, agriculture and land use for resilient livelihoods in the Ewaso Ng’iro North Catchment Area.
