On this International Day of Forests, we honor the legacy of Wangari Maathai through the #Plant20forWangari campaign. Kenya's forests, such as Karura and the Aberdares, are under threat from infrastructure projects and policy changes. These forests are vital for our ecosystem, providing essential resources and biodiversity. We invite professionals, organizations, and individuals to plant 20 trees each to combat deforestation and promote sustainability. Join us in safeguarding our natural heritage. 📸 © Joshua Ondeke #TeamGBM #ClimateAction #Trees4Resilience #WangariLegacy Dorothy Asuza Aseyo Job Mwaura, Ph.D. Joshua Ondeke Nyaguthii Chege Justine Kimanthi Edwin Ngunjiri World Resources Institute Wanjira Mathai Steve Itela WWF Kenya Aberdare Yetu African Wildlife Foundation Justdiggit World Vision Kenya Africa Harvest Biotech Foundation International CIFOR-ICRAF Global EverGreening Alliance Self Help Africa Rhino Ark Kenya Charitable Trust

🚨 Kenyan Forests Under Attack! 🚨 The Green Belt Movement stands in solidarity with Greenpeace International in calling for urgent action to stop the assault on our forests. Despite claims by the Kenya Forest Service(KFS) that concerns over deforestation are baseless, the facts tell a different story: 🌿 Karura Forest: 51.64 acres at risk for Kiambu Road expansion (Case in Court – GBM is the main petitioner). 🌿 Aberdares Forest: A 36.78KM Ndunyu Ihithe Road planned through the forest (Case in Court – GBM is part of the petitioners). 🌿 Lifting of Logging Ban: GBM and other organizations are in court challenging this move. 🌿 Suam Forest: 50 acres earmarked for a border town, threatening restoration efforts by GBM and others. 🌿 Ngong Forest: Trees are already being cleared for a railway project under the guise of "early entry permits." 🌿 Bomas of Kenya Expansion: Plans to take part of Ngong Forest are underway. 🌿 Oloolua Forest: Facing land-grabbing attempts (Active court cases ongoing). These are just some examples of the attacks on our forests. 💚 We urge all Kenyans to take action. Sign the petition now to demand accountability and safeguard our forests for future generations! 📢 Sign the petition here: https://lnkd.in/dYC8nPn #SaveOurForests #SaveKarura #SaveOloolua #AberdareYetu #StopDeforestation

As we count down to Wangari Maathai Day on March 3, 2025, the Green Belt Movement invites you to join us in honoring the enduring legacy of Professor Wangari Maathai, a visionary who dedicated her life to the protection of our natural heritage. Today, we share an inspiring video featuring Wangari Maathai herself, passionately speaking about the urgent need to preserve the Aberdare Forest. In her heartfelt message, she reminds us why plantation farming in our vital water towers must be halted as it not only destroys the intricate balance of biodiversity but also undermines the ecological stability essential for our survival. We are deeply concerned by the government’s current plans to construct the Ndunyu-Njeru-Ihithe road. This project threatens to cut through 25 kilometres of the Aberdare Forest’s closed canopy, potentially inflicting massive, irreversible damage on one of Kenya’s most iconic water towers. Moreover, the notorious practice of plantation farming by the Kenya Forest Service in these water towers continues to exacerbate the degradation of these crucial ecosystems. In light of these pressing challenges, we are organizing a live roundtable discussion this Monday to deliberate on the state of Kenyan forests. This critical conversation will serve as both a tribute to Wangari Maathai and a clarion call for immediate action. We will delve into the issues surrounding deforestation, evaluate the impact of unsustainable development projects, and explore viable strategies for safeguarding our water towers and biodiversity. We invite you environmental advocates, concerned citizens, and all stakeholders to join us live on our YouTube channel as we engage in this vital dialogue. Your voice is essential in the fight to preserve our forests and ensure that the legacy of Wangari Maathai continues to inspire transformative change. Let’s stand united for our environment. Together, we can challenge unsustainable practices and create a future where Kenya’s natural treasures are protected for generations to come. #WangariMaathaiDay #AberdareYetu #SaveOurWaterTowers #SaveOurForests

🚨 Charcoal burning is back—bolder, deadlier! 🚨 The 2024 Forest Status Report reveals that Kenya loses 209,337 acres of forest every year. That’s not just a statistic—it’s a death sentence for our rivers, our climate, and our future. The recent Kajiado county exposé uncovered a painful truth: It’s not just outsiders. Our own people, landowners, are selling our forests for charcoal. And when they’re caught? A slap-on-the-wrist fine, and they do it again. Have we truly sunk so low? Are we so blind, so careless, that we’d sell our children’s future for a few shillings today? We must ACT NOW. Demand tougher laws, real accountability, and protection for our forests. Silence is complicity. #SaveOurForests #SaveKarura #SaveOloolua #AberdareYetu
