How is AI transforming communications and public relations (PR), and what are the implications of its efficiency and personalisation? With its capacity to both enhance efficiency and personalise engagement, AI is setting new standards for how we connect with audiences. However, this advancement also brings forth challenges such as potential job displacement and ethical considerations. These important issues were examined recently at a thought-provoking forum hosted by PETRONAS in collaboration with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI). Part of the Lunch Escape series, this event brought together communications and PR experts from Government Linked Companies (GLCs) and Multinational Corporations (MNCs) for an engaging dialogue on AI's impact and possibilities. The distinguished panel included Jagdev Singh Sidhu, Chief News Editor (Business) at The Star; Dr. Wan Norbani Wan Noordin, Director of the Transnational Education Department at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Council member of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM); Siti Safarina Amrita Alias, General Manager, Digital Communications at PETRONAS; and Zuhairi Zubir, Head of AI Strategy at PETRONAS’ AI Centre of Excellence. Among the most impactful conclusions drawn was the collective determination to use AI not solely for efficiency but also as a driving force for innovation within communications and PR. This objective requires more than the simple integration of advanced technology — it also necessitates a deliberate response to ethical challenges and a dedication to nurturing a culture of continuous learning and evolution. Torch Two paid homage to PETRONAS Penapisan Terengganu Sdn Bhd (PPTSB), celebrating the spirit of “Rehlah”, a journey of reflection, friendship and knowledge that brings us closer together. This has been a tradition since 1989 to strengthen our bonds within the community as we honour the past while looking towards the future, united by a shared purpose.  Established in 1982 as Malaysia’s first refinery, PPTSB has been a cornerstone of the petroleum industry, transforming the local landscape from a coconut plantation into an integrated industrial value chain hub. Over the decades, our dedicated staff, alumni and contractors have played a crucial role in this transformation, turning challenges into opportunities and building a legacy of excellence.  As we pass the torch to the next generation in continuing a legacy together for our future, we carry forward the values and resilience that have defined PETRONAS for the last 50 years. Torch One concluded its journey in Sarawak by making its final stop at the BeDigital Bootcamp (BDB) closing ceremony, where participants were cheering on the top campers who received job and internship offers from local and international companies. Throughout the 12-day curated programme, BDB campers were exposed to valuable insights from PETRONAS as well as their fellow teammates through various brainstorming sessions and interactive activities. For its second year in Sarawak, BDB had a total of 99 participants from seven universities, along with support from 24 hiring partners. Torch One made an appearance at the Powering Knowledge – Discover PETRONAS @ Schools (DPS) programme recently in Sri Aman, Sarawak, attended by 150 students.   Participants from SMK Sri Aman, SMK Lingga, SMK St Luke, SMK Melugu, and SMK Simanggang gained first-hand career insights through a sharing session by Sri Aman-born Anuar Ismail, PETRONAS’ Senior General Manager of Malaysia Petroleum Management. The students also enjoyed an interactive session by Petrosains, aimed at building their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Torch One joined over 180 young shuttlers as they flocked to the Sibu Indoor Stadium for the PETRONAS Sibu Badminton Clinic in conjunction with our 50th Anniversary celebration. National shuttlers Cheng Su Yin and Muhd Haikal Nazri from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) also joined the event, engaging in friendly matches and sharing professional tips through the Badminton Clinic. Torch One of the ongoing "Journey of the Twin Torches" tour arrived recently at SMK Wallace Bay, a secondary school in the remote island of Sebatik, off Tawau in the east coast of Sabah. The torch's arrival coincided with the launch of Yayasan PETRONAS' community initiative to improve internet connectivity at the school, benefitting its teachers and nearly 300 students by providing them with unprecedented ease of access to learning resources and opportunities.
