External Operating Partner for PE/VC firms. Creating high performing leaders & teams @ Fenix Leadership

A few months ago, I got a call from the CEO of a manufacturing company. The company was struggling to scale, and decision-making had become a bottleneck. When I sat down with the CEO, I asked, “Why do you think things feel stuck?” He sighed and said: “Honestly? I feel like I’m carrying the whole team on my back. Maybe they just don’t have what it takes.” As we dug deeper, it became clear that the organization was mirroring his behavior. The CEO avoided difficult decisions, so his managers did too. He blamed others for delays, and his team did the same. The result? Paralysis at every level. Over time the CEO realized he was the starting point of the pattern, and things started to shift. He committed to looking at himself and changing his behaviour—and his managers carefully followed. Organizations often don’t change unless leaders are also willing to. In every project at Fenix Leadership, we start with the CEO and the management team. Because if they don’t model change, they can't ask the rest of the organization to do so. Annoyingly, it also starts with me. I need to model change and be willing to learn to be trusted by a CEO in the first place.

Reflecting on 2024 🌟 Last week, we wrapped up our 2024 evaluation meeting, and it’s time for a recap of the journey we’ve experienced this year! 🚀 Q1: - We organized a workshop and networking event on automating financial reporting, powered by Enrico Ohnemüller, Valeska Pachelbel (bunch) and Dieuwke van Buren (Equals). - We collaborated with INGEN HOUSZ for a Legal workshop on the fundamentals of term sheets, led by Joukje Baur and Quirijn van Veen. Q2: - We hosted an authenticity workshop with Tijn Vuijk and Barbara Stock - Majoewskij (Fenix Leadership) at the office of No Such Ventures, where we were touched by the openness and trust within the group. - We organized a panel session on Founder Wellbeing, Conscious Cultures, and Emotional Intelligence together with Veronica Ostring (AWS), moderated by Maud Vermeulen. A big thank you to Sanneke Mulderink-Scholten Alex Ivanov Arosha Brouwer and Arjan Griffioen for sharing their perspectives. Q3: - We launched the NewLeaf Venture Program together with Nederlandse Vereniging van Participatiemaatschappijen (NVP), Level 20, and Fenix Leadership: a brand-new VC program to empower women in the VC community. Juul Vaandrager-van Aert Anouk van Beusekom Tjarda Molenaar Ineke Cazander Tanja Kramer, Tijn and Barbara, Erica van Eeghen Sophie Heijenberg - We hosted a panel on fundraising as a female founder at Crossroads (Startup Utrecht Region), featuring Djoni de Vos and Cinzia Silvestri followed by community drinks at KPN Ventures, powered by Emmarique Delahaije (KPN Ventures) and Yvonne Greeuw (Invest-NL) . Q4: - We ended the year with a breakfast panel session at Google, focusing on Leadership and Management Team Dynamics, featuring Elena Obukhova, Marjolein Bosch, Katie Brokmann and Claudia Jonkers - van Berkel, led by Adine Tjeenk Willink. On top of these milestones, our community grew significantly this year! We are very happy to see the increasing number of women in our sector. We've started with a new community structure and database, also to make our network more accessible to founders. A huge thank you to our partners, active members, and everyone in the ecosystem that supported us! 🚀 What’s up for 2025? We’re excited to bring you more workshops, events, and collaborations. Are you ready to join us in facilitating connections, collaboration, and career growth for female investors, founders, and service providers? Let’s connect!

  • New year, new plans, new goals and targets.....But do you also take the time to reflect, without the distraction of your phone, watch, deadlines, etc? Reflection can bring new ideas, focus and creativity. It might wake you up and give you the energy you have been searching for....Want to know more? Please contact one of our team members....

“Lost in Nature, Found in Clarity: Why Every Founder Should Take Time Without Their Phone” When was the last time you took the time to reflect without a phone or a watch? No notifications. No deadlines. Just you, the breeze, and the sound of the world continuing without your input. For founders and leaders, the constant hustle can feel non-negotiable. There’s always another call, another pitch, another problem to solve. But here’s the truth: the greatest ideas often emerge in stillness, not in the noise. Here’s why unplugging in nature is so transformative: 🌿 Reconnect With Your Vision Without the distractions of screens and schedules, you can focus on the bigger picture. What are you building? Why does it matter? Who are you becoming in the process? Nature provides the space to ask these essential questions. 🌿 Unlock Creative Problem-Solving The brain thrives on novelty, and nothing sparks fresh ideas like the textures, sounds, and colors of the natural world. Solutions that seemed impossible suddenly feel clear. 🌿 Recharge Your Leadership Energy As leaders, we pour our energy into others constantly. Time in nature helps you refill your cup, grounding you in calm and perspective so you can lead with clarity and strength. 🌿 Break Free From the Time Trap When you leave your watch behind, you step outside the ticking clock of productivity. In that timeless space, you realize it’s not about doing more—it’s about doing what truly matters. The irony? Stepping away from your work doesn’t slow you down. It helps you come back stronger, sharper, and more aligned with what you’re here to create. So here’s my challenge: Schedule time for a “nature reset.” Leave your phone and watch behind. Wander. Reflect. Just be. With Fenix Leadership we organise leadership trail in nature to support leaders to reflect on work & life. Next trails in 2025; - May, Morocco (atlas mountains) - October, Italy (italian Alps) You might just find that the answers you’ve been chasing have been waiting for you all along. #Leadership #FounderMindset #NatureReflection #UnplugToRecharge #CreativeLeadership

At the end of the year we always reflect with our Fenix Leadership team on our cooperation and results of last year and our goals for 2025, while having fun together. Our aim is to bring more 'love and trust' into the boardrooms of portfolio companies, scale- and start ups. We do this because strongly believe that leaders and teams who work together based on trust will have the best results looking at value creation, EBITDA, buy & build strategy, (mental) health, getting things done, NPS score, employee satisfaction, etc. We have worked with about 100+ leaders on this topic this year.  In which we assisted them a.o. in their personal growth, creating a high performing teams, establishing the best fitting organisational model and the right division of roles. We helped teams in the change the organisation needed to accelerate the next phase of growth. With our leadership academy, we took investment professionals as well as Founders and CEOs through their development, both in the Netherlands and in the Italian mountains. We are proud to say that 70% of our work took place in the Netherlands and 30% in European cities such as London, Berlin, Copenhagen, Porto, Munich & Antwerp and that we have worked with the best performing PE's and VC's in Europe. We look forward to 2025 and working with our team, founders, leaders and investors on value creation. • What a great session together with leaders within portfolio companies and private equity firms. Good discussions how to create real value in a 'buy & build' setting. One of the conclusions; We need more en better leaders, instead of managers....

Aligning teams in buy & build is like solving a Rubik’s Cube. Multiple cultures. Multiple leaders. Multiple agendas. That’s what makes team alignment in buy & build environments so challenging. At Handen in de Klei, we brought 80+ PE investors, CEOs, and operating partners together to crack the code. I got to moderate the day (very exciting!) and together with Bart Jan, we facilitated a session for Fenix Leadership on “getting teams aligned” where we shared hands-on solutions for this complex puzzle. A few take-aways: - Every integration needs a unique approach to change management. - Rushed change creates resistance. Take the time to do it right. - Leaders align teams; managers often just check boxes. We had multiple breakout rooms on important topics in Private Equity and organised this event together with impulssum, Conway & Co, and Holtara! Check out the aftermovie below for highlights, and follow Fenix Leadership to join next year’s event! • "Is there research proving that leaders who are 'self-aware' perform better than leader who are not?", someone asked us in a comment on one of our previous posts.........read the answer below. Research consistently shows that self-aware leaders perform better, and a.o. both Harvard Business Review (HBR) and McKinsey support this. Here’s why self-awareness makes a difference: Higher Leadership Effectiveness: According to Cornell research, self-aware leaders align personal values with organizational goals, leading to stronger business outcomes and higher financial performance. Improved Team Performance: McKinsey emphasizes that leaders with self-awareness foster better team dynamics and engagement, creating a culture of trust and openness that drives productivity. Similarly, Tasha Eurich’s research shows that self-aware leaders build strong, supportive relationships, boosting team performance. Balanced Decision-Making: Self-aware leaders understand their strengths and biases, leading to more objective and balanced decisions. HBR notes that this capacity for self-reflection also enables leaders to communicate effectively and manage emotional responses, which improves team morale and clarity. Adaptability and Resilience: Research from The Leadership Quarterly and McKinsey highlights that self-aware leaders are better at emotional regulation, helping them manage stress and adapt to change effectively. In uncertain times, this resilience is a major asset. Higher Employee Satisfaction and Retention: According to Gallup, managers with high self-awareness support employees more effectively, reducing turnover. HBR adds that self-aware leaders are more trusted by employees, enhancing satisfaction and retention. Transformational Leadership: Self-awareness is essential for transformational leadership, enabling leaders to inspire authentically and engage teams on a deeper level. HBR points out that self-aware leaders drive adaptability and high performance, both critical for success in today’s world. In short, self-awareness isn’t just a “soft skill” – it’s foundational for effective leadership and a high-performing organization. If you have research that proves this, please let us know in the comments.
