We are delighted to announce that the IKEA Foundation has renewed its support for the Refugee-Led Research Hub at the RSC to continue its pioneering work helping people who have been affected by displacement to become leaders across the humanitarian sector. After providing crucial early funding, the IKEA Foundation has given an additional grant of £2 million to support the project as it expands its work. This grant will enable the RLRH team to increase the impact of two key steams of work: creating opportunities for researchers with a displacement background to lead primary and secondary research studies in the field of forced migration, from start to finish; and facilitating advanced graduate-level training and career placements for scholars who have been affected by forced displacement. • Smallholder farmers in Uganda often use expensive and harmful energy sources that prevent them from efficiently farming their fields, preserving their agricultural products and responding to the effects of climate change. We are supporting EnDev in improving these smallholder farmers’ access to renewable energy solutions, enabling smallholder farmers and people in rural communities to afford a better life and increase their resilience to climate change.    EnDev is working with smallholder farmers like Nulu Naikoba, a chilli farmer in Uganda, to improve their livelihoods by providing access to solar energy solutions.   You can watch the full video in her own words below!

  • “Together, we can create a world where every child, regardless of their origin and social status, has the chance to dream and realise those dreams.” Maimouna Ba is the regional UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Nansen Award winner and founded the organisation “Femmes pour la dignité du Sahel (FDS)” to support displaced women and children in the Sahel area. Maimouna defends the rights of children and women in the Sahel area and creates economic as well as educational opportunities for them with the goal to become financially independent. Since the outbreak of conflict in 2016, she has been working to combat gender-based violence, rebuild peace and promote female leadership. Her incredible work has had a significant impact on the lives of more than 500 women and children in the Sahel region 🧑🤝🧑 We do not always need superheroes or bold and sudden action to protect and advance #HumanRights. Change happens on all levels and as Maimouna Ba puts it: “Let us not forget that every gesture counts. A good intention followed by an action can change the world.” The IKEA Foundation is proud to support the UNHCR #NansenAward because we believe that unsung heroes who go above and beyond to protect, support and advance the living conditions of forcibly displaced people need to be heard and supported. We’re proud to present another piece to share from our Noteworthy in 2024 series, today looking at our Empowerment Through Appliances report. Refugee camps, whilst originally designed as short-term solutions, can last for decades, with many fundamental energy needs remaining unmet. Our Empowerment Through Appliances report, published last Spring, explores the possibilities that off- and weak-grid technologies can bring as reliable energy solutions. ⚡ 94% of refugee camps lack access to electricity, impacting safety, education and livelihoods for millions of displaced people 📊 ️ Limited research exists on energy solutions for humanitarian settings, making it harder to identify effective business models that can meet the unique challenges of humanitarian contexts 🤝 Collaboration is key, with a need for governments, humanitarian organisations, appliances companies and financial institutions to work together to progress By amplifying the voices of off-grid appliance companies and understanding their experiences, we can bridge the existing knowledge gap and drive innovative solutions that improve living conditions for displaced communities.
