‘Into the Woods 2024’ is open for registration! Independent School for the City organizes a one-week studio exploring strategies for radically greening our cities by creating a micro forest. The course takes place from 21 - 25 October 2024 and is being led by Peter Veenstra (LOLA Landscape Architects) and Ronald Buiting (Buiting Advies BV). Planting trees has become a popular initiative to combat climate change and increase biodiversity. While expanding, regenerating, and rewilding large natural areas are crucial strategies for creating diverse and healthy carbon-storing ecosystems, there are also many reasons to radically green our urban areas. Trees capture CO2 and clean the air, cool cities, help regulate ecosystems, improve our health, and foster a sense of well-being. With ‘Into The Woods’, Peter, Ronald and Independent School for the City build upon the experiences from the previous edition. Following an ecological and hands-on approach, utilizing nature's reproductive processes by harvesting and replanting seedlings. We will create our own micro forest, employing a layered approach from the soil to the treetops, with a specific focus on the biodiversity of what we are planting. Register before 7 October 2024! Over ons
LOLA landscape architects is an office for progressive landscape architecture. LOLA (LOst LAndscapes) studies and designs landscapes that are forgotten, have degraded, are derelict or on the verge of change. LOLA has got an optimistic and conceptual approach to these landscapes and a fascination for new spatial phenomena. Whether in the city, the outskirts or the countryside, we aim to design sublime places that are beautiful, surprising and thriving. LOLA believes in a combination of continuous research, experiment and design. We match knowledge of landscapes and of large-scale ecosystems with contemporary ideas about people, space and nature. Being designers with an integrated approach to projects, we continuously partner with other offices and institutions with specific knowledge and experience. LOLA was founded in 2006 by the landscape architects Eric-Jan Pleijster, Cees van der Veeken and Peter Veenstra. A total of 20 people now work in the office, ranging from landscape architects to architects and urban designers. The office is based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, but operates worldwide for governments, provinces, municipalities, non-governmental organizations and project developers. LOLA designs public spaces like parks and squares, works on redevelopment plans in city and countryside, and develops landscape transformation strategies and spatial researches. Projects of LOLA have been build and/or published around the world. For the total of our work, LOLA received the Rotterdam-Maaskant Prize for Young Architects and the TOPOS landscape award. Superbloei takes over the city. The Gemeente Arnhem presented an ambitious vision for a radical greening of the city. Commissioned by the municipality, LOLA Landscape Architects studied the South-East Canal of Arnhem, and made several proposals for greening this area and for steps to achieve an overarching green structure. One of these proposals is ‘Superbloei’ (Super Blossom), a project that aims to remove the pavement and increase the biodiversity. LOLA invited garden and landscape architect Arjan Boekel of Coöperatie De Bloeimeesters to create a temporary planting scheme that evolves from a lush field of flowers to a robust ecological border. Initially, perennials are planted to attract immediate attention, followed by flowering annuals the following season. What started as a temporary public garden to showcase Arnhem’s green ambitions, became a 'growing garden' with a colourful explosion of flowers in the first year, and evolved into a permanent garden that is connected to the local ecology. We are pleased to announce that LOLA Landscape Architects and Bureau Stadsnatuur have been selected to join the development on the southern part of TU Delft campus. TU Delft is one of the most progressive universities in the field of sustainability and their campus location is the spatial manifestation, where new buildings will contribute to an innovative way of sustainable building. What does innovation and sustainability mean for the clinical university-setting, where it is easy to lose touch with nature? LOLA sees the future of sustainability as a combination between hi-tech development and reviving nature and biodiversity. The development area is a 16ha big academic cluster on the campus South of TU Delft. In the coming years it will be redeveloped with new laboratories, faculties and education buildings. Our landscape concept is an outdoor living room, a welcoming area with a quality of stay and programmed spots. We aim to create a campus environment where students can interact with each other, nature and enjoy being outdoors. LOLA wants to enrich the current landscape with layered planting to create diverse habitats for animals and people. Construction of the first new buildings is expected to start early next year. Nieuwe Vroenten breaks through the inertia of the Dutch rural landscape, particularly in regions dominated by industrial farming. The project by Jaap Korteweg, LOLA Landscape Architects, Gezond Boeren & Wonen - Rabobank, P2 and Arcadis envisions transforming 1,000 hectares of rural land into healthy, sustainable landscape that combines food production with energy generation, nature and living spaces. To establish a landscape for working, living and agriculture, that gives as much as it takes, the agricultural industry needs the transition to animal-free farming. This shift will increase calorie productivity, which in turn will free up a third of the land for conversion to nature, creating space for 2,000 homes of various types. The biobased model shows the possible future landscape in North Brabant. By creating a tangible, exemplary agriculture and residential landscape that functions within the planetary boundaries of food and energy, Nieuwe Vroenten demonstrates the beauty and feasibility of the protein transition. From 29 June to 13 October 2024, the Nieuwe Vroenten model is part of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR). An exhibition at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven will also follow later in October. ‘Biodiversity, circularity, sustainability, green - these are the key words of our time’, thus begins the foreword by Yves Heirman (director of the Belgische Federatie Groenvoorzieners) in the CG. Concept yearbook. The work of LOLA Landscape Architects has increasingly focused on the climate crisis. Not only does this play an increasing role in our design projects, LOLA also develops ideas through research projects and exhibitions. In the CG. Concept yearbook 2024, several of our projects are addressed; Sponsland, Merwede Utrecht, Park Poelzone Westland, Stadhuispromenade Almere and Superbloei Arnhem. You can read the full article on our website (in Dutch and French). The yearbook is a publication of CG Concept by PSG Editions, in collaboration with Coöperatie De Bloeimeesters Embuild Vlaanderen and BFG - FBEP. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e2RBAARe

For the landscape design of the public garden of De Meelfabriek, LOLA Landscape Architects worked closely with garden designer Piet Oudolf. Together we created a green oasis at the heart of the of the industrial heritage setting of De Meelfabriek, a landmark complex in the city of Leiden. Based on the masterplan of Studio Akkerhuis, De Meelfabriek Leiden site has been redeveloped into an attractive mixed-use area. The garden is a lush planted and peaceful place. Carefully framed, it is designed as a large ‘nature painting’. Every season reveals a new beautiful color and shape, utilizing the seasonal dynamics in its best interest. The garden is fitted with pebble-shaped sitting objects and from these benches, one can enjoy the activities of the animals, insects and people in garden in the best way.
