The quality of scrap plays a crucial role in determining its suitability for high-performance applications. Key factors influencing scrap quality: • 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗽 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: residual elements can affect steel properties. • 𝗦𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴: efficient separation of scrap improves its usability. • 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: variability in scrap composition can impact production processes. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 By increasing the amount of scrap used in our production we not only significantly lower our carbon footprint but importantly also maintain the value of the scrap. By converting it into high grade steel products we prevent downcycling of this scrap. For every additional tonne of steel scrap used in production: • 1.6 tonnes of iron ore mining is avoided • 500 kg of coal is saved • 1.6 tonnes of CO₂ emissions are prevented Increasing scrap use supports a circular economy, but challenges like availability, quality, and processing must be addressed. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 Recently a group of young packaging engineers visited Tata Steel Nederland as part of a training organised by the Nederlands Verpakkings Centrum (NVC Packaging Centre). Packaging engineers from a.o. Kraft/Heinz, Signature Foods and Douwe Egberts learned about steel packaging’s unique features both from a market as well as research and development view. Steel packaging is sustainable, formable and versatile by nature and can be used in all kind of forms and shapes.   Marnix Böggemann, marketing manager Packaging: “Continuously inspiring new generations is crucial. These individuals will determine the materials used for future packaging. As such, it is valuable to educate them about the unique benefits of steel packaging, including its role in preventing food waste and its superior recycling performance compared to other materials”.
