Meet Caroline Rookes, our new Head of Ground Engineering. Recently relocated from the UK to New Zealand, Caroline brings over 25 years’ expertise to our team. Heading up our team of specialist ground engineers represents progression in a career she set her path on from a young age. “When I was at primary school in London, we went on a site visit to see construction of the Thames flood barrier to help prevent central London from flooding. I thought it was the best thing ever and went home and told Mum I wanted to be a civil engineer.” You can read more about Caroline here https://ow.ly/EPkY50VhGT6

BPC Site Superintendent Paddy Molloy recognised an opportunity to improve environmental practices by avoiding used safety glasses being sent to landfill. Working with Project Administrator Sue Hodder at their Seaview Wharf site, they’re now ensuring an average of 70 pairs of glasses are being recycled each month. They’re working with Terracycle, a company offering a range of recycling options for construction site waste. The next objective is to introduce recycling boxes for gloves and other personal protective items.

Rodger Sinclair loves operating cranes and we’ve loved having him on board for 37 years at Brian Perry Civil and other Fletcher Construction businesses. He feels proud of having had a hand in a wide range of major projects around the country, from Auckland water infrastructure to the Stratford Power Station and Tauranga Harbour Bridge. “I enjoy seeing things built, being there from start to finish,” Rodger says. “It gives you a sense of pride when you drive over a bridge or see something you’ve had a hand in building.” The camaraderie at BPC is a big reason for why he’s stayed so long. “I like the people here, especially the team I work with now at the Asset Hub in Drury - they make me want to come to work”.

We are thrilled to welcome our Year One cohort to the Fletcher Construction Graduate Programme! During an engaging two-day induction workshop, our new graduates had the chance to connect with senior leaders who shared insights into the scope and strength of Fletcher Building’s diverse business units. They also delved into our core corporate values, which guide our interactions within teams, with customers, and in the wider community. They enjoyed the opportunity to network with our Year Two graduates, who generously shared their experiences and stories from their time with Fletcher Construction, Brian Perry Civil, and Higgins. Year One has eight females, which is a positive step towards our goal of increasing the number of women in Fletcher Construction. Our grads are: with Fletcher Construction, Maria Vaefaga, Samantha Kuijpers, Isa Caresosa; with Brian Perry Civil, Milla Huang, Papamama Pokinio, Dara Patrick, Trishalia Moodley, Jayjay Huang, Shereen Audiss; and with Higgins, Xin Tian Chia, Nicole Lizardo, Una Tuimoala.

BPC’s Central Region team continue to make good progress building a stormwater structure on the Waikato River to support the forecast need for 13,000 new houses in Cambridge by 2050. The outfall structure is being built for the Waipā District Council to take stormwater from future developments. Project Manager Mike Francis says the precast panel wall stitch joints have been completed, along with the Tecco Mesh installation. “The soil nails and horizontal bore drains are complete, as well as the box culvert sealant application, and we’ve done 75% of the rip rap.”

Our Piletech team have been busy building a deep resilient foundation for the newly reopened Tipene St Stephens School south of Auckland. The foundation was required to mitigate the risk of soil consolidation and provide tension uplift resistance. Project Manager Alex Hunger said Piletech screw piles were the ideal solution for the 138m long and 30m wide Canadian supplied Sprung Structure. “Encountering some difficult ground conditions at the site was challenging,” Alex said. “I’m proud of the way we used engineering nous to overcome this and keep the build on programme. Our site team adapted well to the site conditions and worked methodically every step of the way”. Piletech presented a case study on the project to consultants Kirk Roberts Consulting and GHD in Auckland and online across the country.

Brian Perry Civil is celebrating Eric Foster’s 30 years with Fletcher Construction businesses. Following his father Hemi into the construction business, Eric began as a labourer and has worked his way up on projects around the country to become the highly respected Supervisor he is today. “I love construction,” he says, “especially the challenges on the many complex projects I’ve been part of.” Eric’s made some good friends and learned a lot throughout his career. “Knowledge has been passed down to me from a lot of legends I’ve had the privilege to work alongside. I know I don’t own that knowledge. It was shown to me to pass on to the next generation coming through and that keeps me going – sharing knowledge with the up-and-coming young leaders.”
