Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects
Architecture and Planning
A membership organisation for registered architects that supports and promotes architecture in Aotearoa New Zealand.
About us
Since 1905, Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects (NZIA) has advocated for architects and architecture in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Institute represents more than 90 percent of the country's registered architects and hundreds of architectural graduates and students. The Institute has eight branches throughout the country. Branch activities are organised by an elected Council, headed by a President serving a two-year term, and are supported by the national office. Since its establishment, the Institute has produced material essential to architects' work, run programmes to educate members and industry professionals, and promoted high standards of building design and performance. It fosters a culture of collegiality and civic mindedness among its members and supports initiatives that improve the functionality and wellbeing of our communities and built environment. Awards: The Institute's rigourous, peer-reviewed Awards programme sets the benchmark for New Zealand architecture. This includes the Local Architecture Awards and the New Zealand Architecture Awards (sponsored by Resene and APL), the Gold Medal Award, F. Gordon Wilson Fellowship for Public Housing, The Warren Trust Awards for Architectural Writing, John Sutherland Practice Award and the Named Awards. CPD: Seminars, presentations, workshops and other events enable architects to continually upgrade their skills and maintain registration. Te Kawenata o Rata: A treaty of partnership with Ngā Aho, the organisation of Māori design practitioners, enables future joint strategies and action plans to be developed. in:situ: The biennial conference sees the world's leading architects share their knowledge in Aotearoa New Zealand. Friends of Architecture: A free programme for members of the public interested in learning more about architecture and architects. The Diversity Agenda: A partnership with Engineering New Zealand and ACENZ that aims to make engineering and architecture firms more equitable.

Yesterday we marked International Day of Climate Action by coming together in the name of Demystifying Carbon! 🌏 These sold-out workshops saw 140 participants registered at five locations across the motu, with members upskilling in life cycle assessments and their carbon literacy. Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects' Strategic Sustainability Advisor Rachel MacIntyre says advocacy in this space can take on many shapes and forms. "The Institute is upskilling members despite the current legislative limbo. We're future proofing our architects to be ready for change and empowering them to have conversations on carbon at the early design phase. Collaboration is key, with carbon-literate practices and members supporting those not on the carbon literacy journey yet. As an industry we will need to collaborate to tackle the challenges ahead." A huge thanks to industry experts for sharing their time and knowledge - Emily Newmarch (WARREN AND MAHONEY), Tayla Lindsay (Studio Pacific Architecture), Helen Schofield (Stephenson & Turner ), Sian Taylor (Team Green Architects), Chris Dopheide (WARREN AND MAHONEY), Daniel Fernandez Gonzalez (Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities), Francisco Carbajal (Capana Group), Elrond Burrell, Tim Ross, Shana Payne, Nathan Edmondston, Arthur Lee (Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust), anne salmond (Salmond Architecture), Carys Collins (Fineline Architecture), Min Hall, Fiona Short (WARREN AND MAHONEY), Ben F. (Context Architects), Cheryl Bartlett (Warren and Mahoney), Evzen Novak (Studio Pacific Architecture), Tim Asby (Stephenson & Turner ), Ben Mackie (Design Base) and Joseph Lyth (WEL Architecture Ltd). Special thanks to Warren and Mahoney, Arthouse Architecture, Stephenson & Turner and Abodo Wood Ltd for the generous use of their spaces, and to Te Ari Prendergast and Fleur Palmer for the karakia and mihi. The Demystifying Carbon Workshops were proudly sponsored by LMA Timber and Kingspan Thermakraft. #nzia #nzarchitecture #demystifyingcarbon #internationaldayofclimateaction

What does the future hold for Tāmaki Makaurau’s main street? 💭 Six industry experts made their case at The Great Debate, part of last month's Aotearoa Festival of Architecture. Viv Beck, John Tookey, Julie (Juliana) Wilson, Karen Pettigrew, Bill McKay and Julian Mitchell were randomly assigned sides, with Kent Nixon moderating and Jenny Chen acting as convener. Organised by Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects - Auckland Branch, this debate saw both the affirmative and opposition making a case for the functional, environmental and cultural future of the city's golden mile.
