Cultivating the most sought-after Hops experience from grower to glass

About us

New Zealand Hops is a Nelson-based contemporary grower co-operative with core business values founded on collective sustainability, innovative research, creative technologies and modern operational capability. Hops have been grown in the region for more than 150 years and co-ordination of the industry was facilitated with the inception of the New Zealand Hop Marketing Board in 1939. The company has supported a professional plant-breeding programme since the 1950s and, in 1972, New Zealand became the first country in the world to commercially produce hops from triploid hop cultivars in response to international brewers' demand for seedless hops. New Zealand hops Ltd continues on from this rich heritage with core business values founded on collective sustainability, innovative research, creative technologies and modern operational capability. With 18 Members, the co-op exports 85% of its harvest to over 30 countries world-wide.

  • "We are still growing hops in the little bit of original ground that my great, great grandfather in the 1870's started. I feel proud to still be producing hops on that same land, it shows we have looked after it well." Peter Lines, Totara Terrace, 5th Generation Hop Farmer, Wakefield, NZ.

  • We have much pleasure in announcing the NZ Hops Master Growers for 2024. This award highlights the exceptional performance of growers under the NZ Hops Grade Standards. Huge congratulations to MFL Fry & Son, Kotare Hops, New Hoplands, New Hoplands North, Mac Hops, Long Gully Hops, Oldham Hops & Hinetai Hops. To be certified as a NZ Hops Master Grower, a grower must achieve a minimum average score of 85% in three consecutive seasons under the NZ Hops Grade Standards (Whole Cone). This is a challenging quality standard that measures aspects of farm compliance, processing, quality, and sustainability. Growers must earn the honour to be listed as a certified NZ Hops Master Grower by completing all aspects of their hop farming operation to an exceptional standard. This sets a high bar for the industry and allows Master Growers to serve as role models and ambassadors for the industry.
