🏃♀️If I had to describe September in three words, I'd say it was a mix of interesting work, connections and exercise.   🤝 We loved the mahi we completed earlier in the month with Kathryn Koopmanschap and HTK Group for the Food and Fibre Centre of Vocational Excellence! The goal was to build a framework of core transferable skills for the food and fibre industries. Such a great opportunity to work in partnership with some amazing people!   💻 We're currently working with a training organisation in Abu Dhabi to design assessment tools, training material and trainer resources for one of their upcoming programmes. Exciting to be working with Subject Matter Experts from different countries and designing for an international client!   ⛰ I've been running...a lot! This was me and Grace Clarke at Lake Tekapo a week ago during the 21km event. The scenery was incredible and the bagpipes playing as you started...wow!   ☀ Catching up with Selena Chan in Christchurch after the event in Tekapo was a highlight! Selena's mahi and VET research is well-known here in New Zealand and abroad. I've read her research papers, seen her speak at conferences and used her findings to inform my own research into work-based learning. The one-to-one catch up at a cafe near Ara Institute of Canterbury helped me feel invigorated about my own mahi in a similar space.   ☕ Ramon Messam and I also had a fantastic kōrero with Hemi Inia from Tokono Te Raki in Christchurch. Hemi told us about the 'He Toki Sponsors Programme' that is currently being developed and piloted with Naylor Love, He Toki and Ara Institue of Canterbury. The aim of the programme is to connect industry employers with trade training students over the duration of their training at Ara Trades campus. They are seeking industry employers to participate in 2025 and support their local talent of young trainees!   ☘ Last week, Martin Grant and Kylie Taffard EdD Taffard brought the 'trilogy' together to discuss how we might use our combined research findings to benefit VET in Aotearoa, New Zealand! RippleEd, Skills Group and Allen + Clarke have all been doing research on a different aspect of the VET system, and the half-day wānanga was an opportunity to see where this mahi could land.   Very grateful for the opportunities to do interesting work, connect and keep fit.   Bring on October!   #learningdesign #framework #upskilling #humanskills #emotionalintelligence #culturalintelligence #futureofwork #design #workbased #onjob #training ##connections #work #runningevent #tekapo

Spending time inside over winter is not easy for me. But I've lasted longer than I normally do working from home these last two weeks.   I think this weather and the beach has a lot to do with that.   🌞Got to love the winter weather in the Bay this week!   Today however, I'm back hot-desking at Basestation Coworking Space and soaking up all the people vibes.   🎂 It's my birthday month, but I'm squeezing in a bit of work.   This August: 👨🍳 We hung out with Mike Crossan and his wife Niki and can confirm that Mike's culinary expertise is a 10/10. ☕We caught up with Mike McFarlane from Maycroft Construction and talked work-based training at the BEST cafe in the Lower Hutt. 🤝 We're working alongside Kathryn Koopmanschap, HTK Group and the Food and Fibre Centre of Vocational Excellence to build a framework of core transferable skills for the food and fibre industries. 🐟 Ramon is looking forward to a trip to Ōpōtoki on Friday to talk to aquaculture experts and iwi about work-based learning. ✈ We're finalising a proposal that might take us over to the Abu Dhabi for a month to help with learning design and training trainers. 👷♂️👩🌾 👩🏭 I've been speaking to training managers, employers and training organisations about our 'Trainers at Work' programme and there's been lots of great discussions and insights. Kylie Taffard EdD and I will be finalising the report based on the ConCOVE Tūhura research I completed in 2023. 🚴♂️🏃♂️Ramon has been running and cycling to try and keep up with his brother who is training for the Iron Man next March. 📋And...I'm waiting to hear from Connexis if I can become an external assessor for one of my clients.   Honestly, I thought we'd been a bit quiet...but when you see it all written down we've had the time of our lives!! What are you looking forward to this August before Spring starts?   #workfromanywhere #wellington #learningdesign #workbased #onjob #training #coworkingrulz

  • Collaboration is key for those embracing new ways of managing risk in the #ttm industry! Jackie was in Kirikiriroa/Hamilton yesterday to learn about this approach alongside industry experts. #learning #riskmanagement #health #safety

P.I.C.K.L.E day in Hamilton was a great opportunity for me to learn about #riskbasedmanagement in the context of Temporary Traffic Management yesterday. Coming to grips with a risk based management approach when planning for and carrying out work has been top of mind for me recently. I train in the #electricitysupply industry, and it’s important I know how to facilitate and explain this approach to managing risk. But I was unsure about how it was different from a prescriptive, rule based approach. Thanks to Dave Tilton’s excellent facilitation, the activities and scenarios provided and the opportunities to kōrero with Tyler Forsyth and Joe and others at our table, I can report a much greater understanding. Echoing the recommendations from the speakers, there’s a huge need for #collaboration. If you’re an employer and want: - to get your staff trained up on this approach - ideas for making it stick - to know how you can show evidence of competence…. … 👷♀️👷🏼♂️start collaborating with education experts/training providers, like us at RippleEd and ask them to help you do these things. If they only offer a one off training day, and it’s the same stuff every time they train…look around for training providers who can meet your needs. _____________________ Follow me for discussions about:   -Recognising and developing work-based trainers. -Creating work-based learning solutions. -Leading people-centred workplaces.    #workbasedtraining #onjobtraining #learning #training #tvet #apprenticeships #competencies #ttm #capabilitydevelopment #upskilling  #trades #construction #infrastructure #engineering

Just four spots left at this event in Tauranga on Thursday this week! I've just completed a ConCOVE Tūhura funded project to discover how #workbased #training happens in the #construction and #infrastructure industries. This event is especially for employers, education providers, trainers and anyone working in L&D. I'll be sharing my findings, recommendations and ideas for recognising and supporting work-based trainers. I'll be talking about... ✅ Who is training apprentices on-job? ✅ Why do they do it? ✅ What skills and knowledge are needed to become an effective work-based trainer? ✅ A framework to easily recognise and support effective work-based training. ✅ Opportunities for tertiary education providers to better support employers with training. ✅ Suggestions for employers about how to encourage a training mindset at work. ✅ Existing (and often free!) training solutions that will support employers and work-based trainers. Join me for a kōrero around work-based training at Basestation Coworking Space in Tauranga on Thursday July 11th from 9am-10am by clicking the link below. If you're out of town, or can't make this one I'll be holding an online version on 24th July. Let me know if you'd like to attend. #event #trainingandevelopment #upskilling #support https://lnkd.in/gXj34Hvr

  • 😁 Excited to share that an EXCELLENT resource about the #wineindustry has just been published! RippleEd worked in partnership last year with New Zealand Wine, HATA (Horticulture and Agriculture Teachers Association) and Subject Matter Experts to write this comprehensive 10 chapter book about the wine industry in New Zealand. 😎 And it's looking VERY sharp, thanks to some talented designers at New Zealand Wine. As New Zealand Wine says, "The future success of the wine industry will be assured by attracting and retaining talented people. To attract these people, they first need to understand the industry and the many opportunities for rewarding careers it offers. The Vine to Wine book contains industry-sourced data and examples to assist teachers to build their knowledge and create resources for teaching students about the wine industry." Our team of writers seamlessly integrated a HUGE number of curriculum outcomes from Horticultural Science and Agribusiness across Years 11, 12 and 13.   🏆 Here are a couple of quotes that we're pretty proud of!   James Crockett from Primary ITO says “...this fantastic new resource will assist teachers and students to further develop knowledge of the opportunities that exist within the wine industry in New Zealand, and hopefully lead to better transition pathways from school into the workplace, and even further education within the industry.” Kerry Allen says “The Vine to Wine book developed by New Zealand Winegrowers (NZW), will be an excellent resource for both Agribusiness and Horticultural Science students and teachers to upskill and learn about the viticulture industry...The resource will provide a greater insight into the industry, the management practices carried out, processing procedures, markets, and highlight the vast range of careers and opportunities that occur in viticulture and oenology. A big thanks to NZW for making this happen.”   If you're working for an industry organisation and want to attract talented people into your industry...this might be a great solution for you too.   #secondary #schools #teachers #workbasedtraining #workbasedlearning #teaching #learning #training #tvet #apprenticeships #trades #horticulture #winegrowing #attract #talent #upskilling https://lnkd.in/gDrQVrSq

  • 🧐If you had to come up with 8 key themes that describe effective #tvet #workbasedtraining, what would they be? Do they match what ākonga/learners and others are saying in #construction and #infrastructure industries in New Zealand? Have a read below to find out! #framework #themes #professionaldevelopment

View profile for Jackie Messam, graphic

How would you use a ready-made framework to support professional development at your organisation? ✅ Would you use it as is? 🌀Or would you adapt it to create a version that works better for your organisation? A couple of years back I was a consultant on a Te Pūkenga team tasked with coming up with a solution for how Te Pūkenga would design programmes and facilitate learning & teaching for work-based, on-campus and distance ākonga/learners. The solution was based on what ākonga from across the motu said helped them learn best. It was also based on prototype solutions received from many different kaiako/teachers at Te Pūkenga, and from industry representatives. The solution ended up being a comprehensive framework called Whiria Te Ako. You can click on the link in the comments below to see it online. There are four main themes to the Whiria Te Ako framework. I wanted to know if trainees, trainers and those in strategic roles in the #infrastructure and #construction industries ALSO talked about these four themes when describing effective #workbasedtraining. They did! In fact the theme that was MOST talked about was the first one. 1. Be responsive to individuals and make learning accessible 2. Provide hands on learning experiences on-job 3. Build relationships and connections 4. Take a future focused approach However, there were four MORE themes that emerged. These are numbered 5-8 below. 5. Have emotional competence (e.g. patience, motivation) 6. Be experienced – technical and training skills 7. Engage with a trainee’s qualification 8. Make it a good place to learn and work It turns out that Whira Te Ako DOES describe the capabilities of work-based trainers in the construction and infrastructure industries. My advice? If you're a training manager, deciding what to focus on in terms of professional development, use Whiria Te Ako as a base. But take the time to listen to the voices of ākonga, kaiako and industry also. Do they prioritise the same themes? Are there a couple of other you're missing? ———————————— Follow me for discussions about: • Recognising and developing work-based trainers. • Creating work-based learning solutions. • Leading people-centred workplaces. #workbasedtraining #workbasedlearning #programmedesign #professionaldevelopment #teaching #learning #training #tvet #apprenticeships #trades #construction #infrastructure #engineering

  • At RippleEd, we all come from an education background. But we like nothing more than putting on some hi-vis or gumboots and learning about the trades. Here's how we're using our knowledge of education and the trades to connect industry to schools and secondary teachers. #workbasedtraining #workbasedlearning #teaching #learning#training #tvet #apprenticeships #trades #construction #infrastructure #engineering #horticulture #winegrowing #aquaculture

While most of our mahi is in the #workbasedlearning and #workbasedtraining space, we also work on some VERY cool projects that connect secondary teachers to what happens in the trades. 🍇🍎🍒🥝 One of our 'projects in progress' is a book that links the NCEA Horticultural Science and Agribusiness curriculum to the exciting world of fruit production in New Zealand. 📈 If secondary science teachers know more about the #kiwifruitindustry for example, they're more likely to use that industry to help them teach the curriculum. And if you're from that industry...you're likely to see more young people interested in entering it. While we've been working on this book, we've become very intimate with what's happening in schools, the changes to NCEA, the pilot Achievement Standards and how teachers can use your industry to provide examples based on the curriculum. 👩👨 So if you're passionate about your industry, and want to attract more young people...get in touch. ✅ Let's find a solution. ___________________________________________________________   I help organisations attract and train apprentices.    Follow me for advice on:   - Recognising and developing work-based trainers. - Creating work-based learning solutions. - Leading people-centred workplaces.    #workbasedtraining #workbasedlearning #teaching #learning #training #tvet #apprenticeships #trades #construction #infrastructure #engineering #horticulture #winegrowing #aquaculture

Susan Millington is a very skilled writer, teacher and capability development expert. We're very grateful to have her on our team. Over the last year, we've been working together on a resource about grape growing and wine making. Ramon Messam and I have worked with Susan in Malaysia on various school transformation projects. Have a read below to find out why she keeps working with us RippleEd and what makes her tick⌚ 🍇Describe what you do in one sentence. I work at being retired, but occasionally am tempted into the development of educational tools and resources. 🍇What are three main turning points that have contributed to what you do now? -Teaching background and gaining post graduate qualifications to teach ESL (English as a Second Language). -Working in international educational projects in Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Solomon Islands and New Zealand. -Having great friends who tempt me into irresistible work contracts. 🍇What keeps you interested in TVET? I guess it’s a passion for lifelong learning, not just for others, but for myself too. 🍇Your most memorable work achievement of 2023? Contributing to a resource book for teachers on the topic of ‘Wine Growing’. I learned so much and had heaps of fun trialling my new learning. 🍇Your most memorable personal achievement of 2023? Tramping sections of New Zealand’s Te Araroa trail. Parts of the South Island rivers and mountains pushed me to my limits, yet highlighted my determination and resilience when the going gets tough. 🍇How do you stay creative? Day dreaming (and occasional writing). 🍇What’s something you say ALL the time? “I’ll do it in a minute”.   #newyear2024 #learningdesign #tvet #team #introductions #teaching #learning #workbasedlearning #teacherresources #primaryindustries #horticulture #winegrowing
